Located far from interstates in the northeast quarter of Missouri is La Plata. While the area may get visitors such as business travelers or friends or family visiting loved ones, this motels draw to the area is train-buffs. Depot Inn was built brand new as a railroad themed motel. The motel itself can be a museum itself. Throughout the lobby and hallways are railroad artifacts, model trains and other collectable items displayed. Railroad maps, old timetables and photographs are tastefully displayed. The motel is very well kept, clean, and still looks brand new. An indoor swimming pool looks very inviting, although I didn't take a swim during my short visit. The room I had included two double beds, wide screen TV, easy chair, desk, and of course a well care for bathroom. The room color was brown, sounds odd, but the interior decorator pulled this one off very well. The room was pleasantly set-up and felt very rich. The beds were nice and I had no issues during my stay. The motel offers free breakfast; it was kind of weak compared to some of the nationwide chains free hot breakfast, (i.e., Holiday Inn Express / Comfort Inn).
Speaking of food; this area has limited nearby choices. A Mexican Restaurant next door and a Casey's General Store (convenient store / gas-station) is within walking distance, you can buy hot pizza and other easy meals/snacks from there. Other food is found by driving north or south on route US-63.
Getting back to the motels main draw, train-buffs. Although you can not see actual trains from the motel. A quarter of a mile walk down a motel maintained path is a railroad overlook located along the busy BNSF Railway mainline. An enclosed and heated shelter provides a nice place to wait between trains, chairs, picnic tables and restroom (outhouses) are also on site as well as a small parking lot. Its a nice, relaxing place to spend some time watching cross country trains zoom through Missouri. The La Plata Amtrak station is also within view. The motel offers shuttle service for guests arriving by train. For those guests in their motel room who hear a distant train whistle, you can turn your motel room TV on to view a live camera facing the tracks, you'll never miss a train!
This was my first visit to La Plata. After years of seeing the motels ad in railroad magazines, I am glad I finally got to stay here. I will plan to return and spend an additional night or two in this quiet town, and fit in some quality train-watching!
