“Off the beaten path, but worth the detour!”
Reviewed 5 February 2014

Located far from interstates in the northeast quarter of Missouri is La Plata. While the area may get visitors such as business travelers or friends or family visiting loved ones, this motels draw to the area is train-buffs. Depot Inn was built brand new as a railroad themed motel. The motel itself can be a museum itself. Throughout the lobby and hallways are railroad artifacts, model trains and other collectable items displayed. Railroad maps, old timetables and photographs are tastefully displayed. The motel is very well kept, clean, and still looks brand new. An indoor swimming pool looks very inviting, although I didn't take a swim during my short visit. The room I had included two double beds, wide screen TV, easy chair, desk, and of course a well care for bathroom. The room color was brown, sounds odd, but the interior decorator pulled this one off very well. The room was pleasantly set-up and felt very rich. The beds were nice and I had no issues during my stay. The motel offers free breakfast; it was kind of weak compared to some of the nationwide chains free hot breakfast, (i.e., Holiday Inn Express / Comfort Inn).

Speaking of food; this area has limited nearby choices. A Mexican Restaurant next door and a Casey's General Store (convenient store / gas-station) is within walking distance, you can buy hot pizza and other easy meals/snacks from there. Other food is found by driving north or south on route US-63.

Getting back to the motels main draw, train-buffs. Although you can not see actual trains from the motel. A quarter of a mile walk down a motel maintained path is a railroad overlook located along the busy BNSF Railway mainline. An enclosed and heated shelter provides a nice place to wait between trains, chairs, picnic tables and restroom (outhouses) are also on site as well as a small parking lot. Its a nice, relaxing place to spend some time watching cross country trains zoom through Missouri. The La Plata Amtrak station is also within view. The motel offers shuttle service for guests arriving by train. For those guests in their motel room who hear a distant train whistle, you can turn your motel room TV on to view a live camera facing the tracks, you'll never miss a train!

This was my first visit to La Plata. After years of seeing the motels ad in railroad magazines, I am glad I finally got to stay here. I will plan to return and spend an additional night or two in this quiet town, and fit in some quality train-watching!

This hotel is north east Mo's well kept secret. We heard about this hotel and the train museum and all the memorabilia from a friend. Depot Inn has the best staff we have seen at a hotel in a very long time. The rooms were very clean, quiet, along with a king bed that was just perfect. The staff picked us up at the historic La Plata Amtrak station. The train was late but the hotel was there within minutes of arrival. We could not get a rental car for our stay, but the hotel offered to take us where ever we needed to go. We plan to make this trip again next year.

Over the years we have stayed at most of the hotels in the Kirksville area, and this one is just head and shoulders above the rest

The rooms are impeccably clean! The regular rooms are large, with plenty of room to open up your large suitcases. The beds are very comfortable (I really liked the platform base which gives the mattress much more support than a regular bed frame-- absolutely no sagging!)

The staff will very kindly pick you up or drop you off at the nearby historic La Plata Amtrak station.

The breakfast is not fancy, but met our needs very well.

We enjoyed browsing all the train memorabilia in the lobby and hallways. It is a very carefully curated and well-maintained exhibit.

Check out the nearby train viewing platform. It is just so well and cleverly done. My family was really tickled with it! The hotel even keeps a few bicycles in back for those who wish to pedal over to it.

We will be staying at the Depot Inn on all our future trips!

We hadn't stayed at Depot Inn for almost 3 years, however we were not disappointed again this stay! We stayed in one of the suites and our teenagers stayed in a regular room. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and the hotel was very accomodating as usual. This hotel is still a gem in NE Missouri and is very worth visiting, if not for the hotel stay then at least to walk through and look over all the train memorabelia. I highly recommend it!

I've stayed in hotels/motels in Kirksville off and on for the last 20 years (business travel, fishing/hunting travels) and I doubt, after this past weekend that I ever will again. Depot Inn and Suites has it down pat. The site, property and rooms are Clean! The detail to the theme of the train/rail era is impeccable. Staff are friendly and helpful...When I made my reservation, staff reminded me to visit their web page for a 25% discount...what service. the rooms were up to date, great beds, perfect ac, great decor and probably the cleanest room I've ever stayed in-anywhere. LaPlata was the perfect stop for the "Guys Weekend" I had with my boys-perfectly inbetween the locations of Atlanta CA, Sugar Creek CA and Hazel Creek. What a great place!

Room Tip: Rooms on the west side will be more quiet-less highway noise. Bring a swimsuit they have an indoor...

My friend and I decided to stay here on our road trip to Illinois and Michigan. Both of us are interested in trains. I have passed through La Plata a number of times on Amtrak and it is interesting to me to stop in and see the area around these small stations when driving through. The lobby and hallways of the hotel are full of railroad memorabilia. A now defunct line of the Wabash RR used to run in the back of the property. Two Amtrak cars are parked out there, with some mildly interesting items about the history of Amtrak. The station is less than a mile away, and the motel will pick up guests from there. ( and they do advertise they will do the same for the more distant stations of Quincy and Ottumwa. ) We did go down to the neat and trim La Plata station to observe the eastbound Southwest Chief.
The motel rooms are surprisingly comfy and attractive. There is an indoor pool, and a continental breakfast is available, but that was nothing special. Had I stayed more than one night, I would have gone into the town to a local cafe.

Liked the train historical theme. Even had a train themed playground my daughter enjoyed. The rooms were clean, nice, nothing too fancy. Came with a continental breakfast, though we stuck by the waffle maker. It was tasty enough by definitely not the healthiest breakfasts. The eating area had nice large tables though there were only a few of them. I believe I saw two pools, one a table and the other an indoor water kind. The price was cheaper than the last hotel but definitely not super cheap. Seemed about right for the money and locale. The thing that impressed me most is when we forgot our phone charger they took done our address and mailed it to us. Now that's friendly service. The place had a good energy overall to it and would recommend and or stay there again.
