We've dined at the Hawthorne Inn in the past and have had wonderful experiences...until our visit this summer. Although the restaurant was not crowded, we waited for quite some time prior to being seated (or acknowledged), and we may have waited even longer had we not flagged down the bartender for assistance.

Once in the restaurant, the service was efficient and friendly, but the food was just OK-- some items were very good, some were just average.

As an aside, the Hawthorne Inn allows smoking at the bar, which is not an issue towards the back of the restaurant, but definitely noticeable in the middle and front areas of the dining room.

All in all, we love the charming town of Labadie, but will likely explore Washington for dining options next time.

This was our 2nd visit to the Hawthorne Inn, and the service and food were oustanding both times. The restaurant has several dining rooms and a massive bar, both of which are frequented by locals. Attire is definitely casual, but the food is anything but. The appetizer list has rather standard selections (toasted ravioli, coconut shrimp, etc) but ours were prepared well. Their wine list is rather short, but had good selections and the prices were very reasonable. The entrees is where this place shines. My wife and I had "Tenderloin Allison" on our last visit and it was beyond description. Tenderloin + prosciutto + provel, with a mushroom/balsamic reduction. Doesn't get any better. Menu also has pizza, sandwiches and pastas, along with a kids menu.

The only thing we would change is for them to lose the plastic tablecloths, as they don't go with the quality of food . . . but that's about it. Reservations definitely recommended.

This restaurant is close to home and absolutely a place we have grown to love. Although, sometimes a bit pricey, the salads are delightfully tasteful and the main courses are delicious.

A group of us were at an outdoor dog show at Purina Farm, located in Gray Summit, MO, a fairly remote rural area outside of St. Louis, and a friend suggested that we had to go to Hawthorne Inn for dinner. Surprisingly it was only a few miles away. Our hotels were far away in the other direction so we couldn't freshen up. She said that at Hawthorne they were used to people going there from outdoor dog events at Purina Farm so we need not worry about our unkempt appearances from running dogs in the rain all day. By the time we gathered hungry, tired folks together we had a group of 15 at 6p on a Friday night. Amazingly they were able to accommodate us immediately at one large round table and a nearby booth.
The service was slow, possibly due to our large group. The menu had sandwiches, pricey entrees, and mid-range pastas. The dinner salads were disappointingly soggy but the meals we ate were fantastic. Friends split a philly steak sandwich made from a ribeye steak and found it to be delectable. I had angel hair pasta with grilled scallops, portabella mushrooms, and spinach. It was garlicy and delicious. It was also a large serving that I couldn't get close to finishing so I sent my leftovers home with a friend who lived locally since my motel had no frig. She admitted the next day that she had dipped into it that night when she got home and agreed it was yummy. Everyone was happy and satisfied with their meals. I will definitely go back the next chance I get.
This is a nice destination for bicycle or motorcycle groups as the landscape along the small highways getting there are quite scenic and there is at least one more restaurant, 3 Brothers, at this little speck on the highway.

Had dinner here the Saturday after Thanksgiving and, despite its seemingly rural location, was surprised with the crowds and the generally good food quality.

Reservations needed in this cute but unpretentious restaurant that combines plastic tablecloths with a mid-range menu and rural decor in what remains of a tiny railroad stop village west of St. Louis.
