“Great overnight get away with the family!”
Reviewed 25 June 2014

We booked the Wilderness Lodge for a last minute overnight get away for our family and couldn't have been more pleased. For a family of five, our cabin was the perfect size and was situated right on the river so we had a great view of the Black River. We were most impressed with the extra friendly customer service. Becky is incredible and along with Tom, the owner of the lodge, they did everything possible to ensure that our experience was memorable. No detail was spared and when we made even the smallest request they attended to it immediately. And we can't say enough about the cuisine. For dinner on Saturday evening, a succulent pork dish was served...and our picky little ones cleaned their plates. For breakfast the next morning, the spinach and ham quiche was equally delicious. Along with the myriad of activities (from zip lining to miniature golf to ping pong and billiards), the lodge was perfect for us. We also floated while there (which Becky arranged for us at the Rivers Edge right next door) and we loved our time on the river. We all highly recommend the Wilderness Lodge and look forward to visiting again soon!

Room Tip: Cabins by the river have a great view but can be slightly noisy since they are right on the road.

Ambience, quiet, and proximity to interesting local sights are high on the list of any vacation plans. But at Wilderness Lodge, you must also add superior attentiveness by the staff, because without a staff genuinely interested in the welfare of their guests, don't expect a fun, memorable vacation. My college friend and I, celebrating over 50 years of friendship, recently chose Wilderness Lodge because of its central location -- she was coming from Maryland and I from Colorado. We sure lucked out with, among others, Tom (proprietor) and Janet (super chef). They even provided not one but two birthday cakes -- and their voices -- as the three of us sang happy birthday to my friend on the night we had the entire lodge to ourselves! Rustic charm oozes throughout Wilderness Lodge. But the frosting on the cake is a staff committed to making your stay here memorable and pleasurable. And that is at the heart of this lodge in this place nestled in the Ozarks.

Room Tip: Try one of the riverside cabins -- two nestled next to each other with large bedrooms (2 queen-size...

I've just returned from a wonderful time at Wilderness Lodge. The entire staff was very kind and helpful. There are so many activities to do, or you can choose to do nothing at all. :-) The gourmet comfort food coming out of Miss Janet's kitchen was tasty and made with the love and care of a mother.

I'm so grateful that this "gem in the Ozarks" was shared with me. I'll be back!!

We spent 4 days at the lodge recently. Our cabin was nestled deep in the hillside with a porch that faced the woods. With the windows open all you could hear was birds and the flowing river close by. Extremely relaxing. The staff was very pleasant and helpful. The food served was top notch, spinach salad topped with goat cheese and pine nuts, corn pudding, homemade meatloaf, and of course great country breakfasts every morning. There was no shortage of activities, volleyball, shuffle board, billiards, horseshoes, just to name a few. I highly recommend going on a canoe trip, or as the locals call it " a float". We did the 3 mile which was adequate for first timers but I would go for the 6 mile float and make a day of it and then head over to the pub for happy hour. If a rusitc get away is what you would like, this is the palce to go for sure.

Room Tip: We had a cabin up the hill so if you don't like walking up steep hills chose the cabins that are...

Our extended family of twelve included ages from 85 to 6 months. We were all able to stay near each other but had plenty of privacy as well. It felt like being at summer camp! We rafted, played shuffle board and mini golf and basketball outside. There are a million board games as well, ping pong and pool. Too early for pool to be open and hot tub not working. Best time of the day is mealtime. The food is outstanding and we loved being in the community dining room. The hosts are completely accommodating and want to make your stay enjoyable. We were able to have bag lunches made each day and they were great too! We will be sorry to leave this comfortable and friendly place.

Room Tip: We stayed in the cabins at the top of the hill. We loved it but you are likely to need your car to g...

Recently spent 3 days here. The cabins are very confortable with king size beds and stone wood burning fireplaces, and screened in porches which overlook the river. Tom, one of the owners, could not have been more accommodating. We were only one of 2 cabins occupied during our stay. Tom made sure we had plenty of firewood, even coming to start a fire before we returned from our daytime outing. He and the other owners are self-proclaimed "foodies" and it shows. Variety of breakfast menus, and wonderful evening meals were served with great hospitality, and a feeling of dining in the owner's home. They even provide complimentary appetizers in the bar area every evening complete with a roaring fire in the stone fireplace. The entire staff was eager to provide an outstanding experience. The resort is perched above the Black River, and is close to Elephant Rocks State park, and Johnson Shut-Ins.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
At Wilderness Lodge, we have over 25 different cabins, suites and cottages for guests to enjoy. All cabin prices are based on a per person, per night charge since dinner and lunch are included with the package. Breakfast is available continental style from 7:30am to 9:30am, and we also serve a hot breakfast from 8am to 9am. For dinner, we have 4 seatings at 6pm, 6:30pm, 7pm, and 7:30pm. During the week there is just one dinner seating between 6pm and 7pm (but we still try to be flexible if guests would like to come a little earlier or later). As far as activities, there is of course the Black River directly across the road from Wilderness Lodge for a little (or a lot) of water fun. Just a short walk from the cabins, the river, gravel bars, and side streams are great places to explore, swim, catch water critters and just relax in the sun. For a bit more adventure, we rent canoes, rafts, kayaks, and tubes for floating. We port floaters upstream in the morning for a 4 to 6 hour float (depending upon how fast the river is moving and how many gravel bar breaks you take) that ends up right back at our rivers edge campground. There are plenty more outdoor activities on the property including hiking, fishing, miniature golf, horse shoes, basketball, shuffle board, a playground, frisbee golf, etc -- we even recently found a cave to explore for those not afraid of small spaces. :) There are also a number of cool nature attractions within a short car ride, including Elephant Rock State Park and the recently opened Johnson Shut-ins. To get out of the heat, we have an air conditioned rec room with games & indoor activities -- and we plan to keep the main Lodge open all day long (over the last couple years it was only open during the meal times). Also in the main lodge is the Ripple Room Lounge, open for cocktails and beverages from 5pm to 9pm everyday. For the readers in our crowd that want a little piece and quiet, we have taken one of the Rock Cabins and converted it into a library refuge. Finally, on Saturday nights, we will also hold an informal friendly family game night in the main lodge for anyone that wants to attend. Unwind. Cool Off. Eat Well. Enjoy Wilderness!
