My partner and I stayed at this hotel for one night in between other travel destinations. We had just come from a week in the bush on safari and a week at a backpacker joint along the "Wild Coast." The Colosseum provided just the touch of luxury we needed - a comfortable bed with fresh sheets, a giant tub, large shower, good food and great service. We had plans to hit the town, but ended up staying around to enjoy the amenities and the friendly service at the bar and restaurant.

We were greeted immediately by reception staff who were ready for our check in; the gals at the bar shared aspects of local culture and were very attentive; restaurant servers were pleasant and timely. They had a yummy breakfast buffet in the morning.

Be sure that you have accurate directions, as we had a heck of a time finding the place. GPS couldn't locate it by address and couldn't find it purely by name. We were able to get close to it by finding Century City, and then tried asking others for directions. I think it might be a bit new or not well-known, because most people we asked couldn't lead us. After some patience and orienteering on our part, we managed to find it. Just be sure you get a good lead on it before you set out so you don't end up frustrated.

We booked the colosseum as a last resort . The initial impression was very good . I was in touch with the reservation agents and the were courteous and prompt. We arrived at colosseum on the last leg of our holiday . We had no complaints with the hotels we stayed earlier and we were expecting the same here . We were to be disappointed .
First - the open tubs . Not very convenient for families. THe shower had transparent glass - again not ideal for families . The room size was good and had a good kitchenette with microwave etc . But ,the cleaning of the room was very bad . I had to complain twice about it . The lamp was broken and quickly just put back - possibly by the housekeeping staff .The AC would not cool . We complained 3 times in 2 days and the service personnel and admitted that there was a problem and others had been complaining too. We left for the day and informed the reception that if it was not sorted by evening , we would request a room change . When we came back in the evening , the problem still persisted. When we informed the lady at the reception - she offered us a FAN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!at 200 USD a night , i get a fan in my room ?????? I used a few nasty words before our request was heeded and we were given an "upgrade" . The upgraded room had a bit of extra space , a view of teh table mountain and a DVD player . But the wardrobe door was falling off the hinges , and hence wouldnt close . So the wardrobe light was on the entire time ! The bathroom door too , refused to close fully .
At that point we had just 2 nights left and we did not want to spoil our holiday . Even as we checked out - our airport drop was late . At 385 Rands for an airport drop , one expects punctuality
The impression we got was that the hotel had a management problem and hence there was no one to oversee the day to day functioning of the place . Without management , the staff was doing as they pleased and hence the state of affairs
The only good thing about the hotel was the proximity to canal walk mall . U can literally walk up to the mall . However , would never recommend

The staff at the Colosseum hotel are absolutely wonderful. They understand the importance of service excellence and what true hospitality should be. I've stayed at the hotel many times and every time I've received consistency in service. The hotel itself is wonderful however a few minor maintenance issues need to be checked regularly within the rooms, i.e. the lights
However I would recommend this hotel 100% to anyone whether on business or leisure. The service and warmth exuded by the staff at the Colloseum is why I enjoy this hotel, irrespective of its good location, amazing views, etc.
See you all very soon, I look forward to it!

Regards
Veronica

We planned to spend a few days at the Colosseum based mainly on the apparent value of the Expedia listing and the proximity (via the N1) to friends in central Cape Town. On arrival, staff were very receptive to a last-minute request for a day's extension, promising (and eventually delivering) to keep us in mind if there were any cancellations. Our room was generously sized, with a lovely open-plan arrangement that, although less than ideal for families with kids (I imagine), suited a couple perfectly. A large bed with luxurious sheets and TVs in both the sleeping and sitting areas, as well as built-in international power sockets, bedside alarm clocks and a small kitchen area complete with empty fridge were lovely bonuses. A balcony with gorgeous views over Table Mountain and the Cape Flats was a crowning feature of the room, and highly effective air-conditioning made the high December temperatures manageable.

The hotel is situated in a burgeoning complex - Century City - with close proximity by car or on foot to the Canal Walk mall, which boasts most major South African brand stores as well as 2 supermarkets and a number of restaurants and a cinema. Also nearby are a sister hotel with a pool and gym, free to guests of the Colosseum, and the Ratanga Junction theme park.

Breakfast - included in our Executive Suite rate - was comprehensive, as long as we arrived fairly early. The one day we went down after 9, quite a few of the options normally available were finished and not replenished, and when we requested some butter, we were blithely informed that "none was available", without any effort made to check with the kitchen or obtain some from the supermarket next to the hotel.

With the change to a different room on our last day, we became aware of a few shortcomings in the hotel's veneer of luxury. Elements of the room that we had assumed were standard turned out to be subject to maintenance issues, i.e. lights not working, cabinet doors missing, balcony doors sticking or not locking from the inside. It paints the picture of a hotel built to high specifications but not adequately maintained, and care should be taken to check more recent reviews for signs of further deterioration in standards.

Similarly, the service suffered a hiccough when we realised that we had been charged at a higher rate for the final night's stay, even though we had checked repeatedly that the additional night would be subject to the same rate as the initial booking. It took a conversation with the manager and a compromise to a lower rate - although still higher than the original booked rate - to resolve the issue. The attempt to extort a higher rate than offered left us unwilling to recommend the hotel to friends and family for future stays, although should not be considered to be indicative of the caliber of the hotel in the broadest terms.

Room Tip: 4th floor mountain-facing rooms have balconies that are worth the premium.

Nicely located near Canal walk. Service and staff was good. Breakfast buffet was good though didn't vary day to day. Didn't have a swimming pool. Hotel doesn't have a shuttle service and had only one taxi so on one day ended up waiting for over an hour at a point for pick up. Rooms are beautifully done though.

Room Tip: Look for a room facing Table Mountain...beautiful

We stayed in an executive suite for two nights, and found the room perfect for our family of four. The kitchenette was convenient and the bathroom modern and spotless. The children loved their little goodie buckets! All staff members were friendly and efficient and check-in went smoothly. We had a lovely dinner at Cin Cin: the lamb shank is highly recommended. We will definitely be back!
