“Quiet Motel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 June 2014 via mobile

This was a first time stay. The prices are reasonable. The rooms and grounds were very clean. The owners are always walking around taking care of things. The beds are a little old but slept okay. It's a nice family atmosphere. Close walk to a few restaurants and icecream. We would stay again.

Golden Door is like a large bed and breakfast. It's a Mom and Pop operation, owned by the same people for 20+ years. Their pride in the place shows in the lovely landscaping and cleanliness, and in their friendly reception and willingness to help. The motel is a circle around a small park with a large outdoor pool, a large grassy area, and benches and shade trees.

If you are expecting fancy rooms and modern furnishings you will be disappointed, but it is clean and quiet, with comfortable beds. And you'll sleep better knowing you're supporting a local family, not a national chain.

The Outlet Mall is within walking distance, and the new Dierbergs grocery has anything you could want, also within walking distance. Randy's Frozen Custard, a great local tradition, is right across the street.

The room smelled musty. We had to go buy candles to make the room smell better.. It was good for what we paid for it. I guess that is why they say "You get what u pay for." It was back in 2010 so it could be better now!!

I had read the reviews for here, which influenced me to try this place. I have always wanted to stay at the Mom & Pop places, and this was the one!!! I will truly admit that this is the cleanest motel room I have ever stayed in---hands down!!! Loved this ace and the owners! Yes it is retro-no fridge or blow dryer, but who the heck doesn't have a good cooler and a blow dryer??? I will plan on staying here again and again!!!! Thank you!!!

I have been going to the Lake of the Ozarks since I was a toddler. The Golden Door Motel is like The Lake used to be. Relaxed, laid back and a ton of fun. I have stayed at all the top tier properties and this is place is hands down my all time favorite. There are no coffee makers or microwaves in the rooms. They are cool, comfortable and spotless.
I was there over Labor Day weekend and as I was checking out I heard two different couples at the front desk tell the owner, " See you next year."
Well they will see me too because I may go back every year from now on,
The pool area is a classic. Like a couple other reviews I have read it feels like a place you might have stayed with your folks on a great road trip. Pine trees, flowers, sparkling clean.
The owners take great pride in the property and they are really great folks.
There are restaurants within walking distance and Dierbergs amazing grocery store across the street.
The Golden Door also has outdoor charcoal grills so a picnic is just waiting to happen.
I have been in the Travel Business for 30 years so I have been to some great places.
I have never been in such a hurry to return to a place as I am about returning to the Golden Door Motel.
Lets keep this place a secret, Its a Mid- America treasure.
See you a the pool.....

If you did not know about this place, or stop in and look around, you could drive right by and think it was a dump; as the motel does not look that inviting from the road. However, once you walk through the breezeway (old drive up lane) and enter the courtyard of the property (which all rooms face), you will feel transformed into a wonderful, older and simpler time. The landscaping and pool area are beautiful and the entire setting reminds me of the fun and relaxed motels we used to stay at when I was a kid!
The rooms are spotless but could use a few updates, but not too many as this would squash the "retro" feel of the place. I'm kind of a "hotel snob" but I can guarantee you that I will be staying at the Golden Door Motel every time I'm in this area!

Room Tip: The most "retro" looking of the rooms are in the 2-story building in the back of the prope...

LOVE this place! Reminds me of motels from my childhood! Exceptioally clean. The outdoor pool is in a garden setting, surrounded by the rooms so it feels private and quiet. The owners, Dave and Geneice are warm and friendly. Yes, the rooms are a bit dated but that is part of this motel's charm. I hope to stay here every summer:)
