Yates House Bed & Breakfast
Ranked #3 of 5 Rocheport B&B and Inns
Reviewed 5 September 2013

To do the Yates House right, book “The Garden Suite”, arrive early, and walk or bike the nearby KATY trail state park, southward (toward Jeff City) a ways. Return at dine at Abigail’s (reservations required) that evening – if Dixie isn’t catering or teaching a cooking class. After relaxing in the back yard flower gardens and enjoying a great sleep, get ready for the best part.

For breakfast, expect something from Dixie like Crème Brûlée French Toast (an Emeril Lagasse recipe Dixie fixed) or Praline Biscuit with Fresh Peaches and Cherries, followed up with Tarragon & Leek Egg Soufflé with a Bacon ‘n Sausage Skewer. I call the latter the “Just Shoot Me” breakfast. It is to die for. Imagine a cinnamon roll with the texture of a flaky buttermilk biscuit, with crunchy pecans quilted in, and topped with a big dollop of whipped cream, lazing in a pool of sautéed fresh peaches and tart cherries.

Yates House will wag your tail, trust me.

You’ll definitely want to bring home a copy of their cook book.

Room Tip: The Garden Suite, hands down.

My husband and I had the most pleasant opportunity to stay at the Yates House B&B on our trip from AL to CO ... BEST stop ever!!! Conrad and Dixie were the best hosts and our room was delightful. The decore, beds and linens were so comfortable we would have loved to have stayed longer. At our Hosts advice we had an excellent dinner at a local winery Bistro and then Breakfast at the lovely B&B the next morning was fabulous! We would highly recommend this location for anyone who wants a place to really relax and be pampered while traveling or just a great place to get away! Don't forget to have a couple homemade cookies before bed!

And so it was, in every way. All things said in the many reviews previous to mine are the absolute truth. I swear it on top of any of the delicious food served by Dixie and Conrad! Quality in all directions with nothing overlooked. This includes: beautifully appointed rooms/suites, beds for comfort and sweet dreams, gourmet breakfasts served with a smile and good morning cheer, a cozy patio to enjoy the fauna and flora or a bottle of wine, and a friendly atmosphere abounds. The location is perfect for a very short walk to unique shops and casual restaurants. Conrad is a fine historian of the area and go-to source for information in general. Be sure to pick up Dixie's cookbook. It is filled with a treasure of top-notch, gourmet, easy to follow, recipes. Upon leaving I felt as if I had made two new friends. "I shall return!!"

This is the ideal place for a respite from the "real world." Absolute perfection in every way--the buildings, the grounds, the rooms, the food and the hospitality. The location is ideal for relaxation and charm. There are lovely shops and restaurants within walking distance. Yates House exceeded my expectations in every possible way.

Room Tip: Every room is lovely.

We really enjoyed this B&B and our room - The Rose room - was wonderful. The owners, Conrad and Dixie, were very friendly and helpful from the start and accommodated all of our requests. Breakfast was delicious both days and I bought her cookbook; can't wait to make some of the recipes:) The outdoor patio and gardens are so pretty - bring a bottle of wine and sit out there and enjoy a glass before heading out for dinner. You definitely will enjoy staying here.

Beautifully appointed rooms, comfy beds, and outstanding hospitality. The Yates have perfected the B & B experience. Dixie is a gourmet cook, breakfast will astound you. Can't wait for my next stay! Each room has its own character and charm. The location is perfect, you're only half a block away from a fabulous restaurant and lots of "antiquing". There's a winery a short distance away overlooking the river and of course the famous Katy Trail is almost at your doorstep. The best part of staying here is how welcoming Dixie and Conrad are. They make you feel like family.

Room Tip: If you'd like a separate sitting room in your suite - ask for the Garden Suite.

This may be a wonderful place to stay, should a person actually stay there. My experience with just trying to be in contact with the owner, Dixie, was very frustrating. We wanted to stay a night next week (Feb 6, 2013) and possibly take a cooking class. I called several times (at different times during the day) and always got a voice recording. I emailed requesting information and did get a response (with a price quote for the cooking class--salad, entree and desert $160 per person!!) In the email Dixie said to give her a call to discuss specifics. I called several more times and could never reach anyone! I don't know if its because its winter and they aren't busy or maybe something is going on and they can't return calls but I am thinking the high price she quoted for the cooking class and the lack of calling back in general sounds like someone who doesn't want the business.

We apologize for the missed communication with Wendy M. Yates House is a six room bed & breakfast and does not employee a full-time front desk person. At the time of your calls, we were renovating a guest room and were quite busy painting and were allowing calls to go to our service. We returned your calls to the number you provided and called you a total of seven times but your front desk wasn’t open either. Thank you for reminding us of the importance of answering our phone. Again, we’re sorry our unproductive game of phone tag left you unserved.
We need to offer a brief explanation regarding Cooking Class pricing. Yates House provides fully interactive, hands-on cooking classes. Our classes are not observational. Unless we plan a class and then advertise for enrollment, each class is custom designed to fit the pupil’s skill level, interests, and time constraints. This necessarily limits the number of pupils per class. When we have interviewed an interested pupil and have designed a class, we can then price it accurately. All other prices are estimates. Time spent planning, shopping, pre-class prep, class time, serving time, clean-up time, space and equipment use, and ingredient prices are calculated and make up the price of a cooking class. Observational classes are always less expensive but are available nearly continuously on television and are much more geared to entertainment than to culinary art.
