If you like old-fashioned small-town diners, this place does not disappoint. Located on the main drag in St. James, Diana's was an awesome find.

We ordered a variety of foods, and all were delicious. I had the double cheeseburger, and it was enormous and awesome.

Atmosphere was down-home, quaint, and clean. The servers were efficient and friendly. I would definitely eat here anytime I visit St. James.

Pros - Easy to find on the main street in St. James (Jefferson St.). Large variety on the menu. 50's classic car decor. Homemade chips
Cons - The main area is "smoking" whereas the room off to the side in "non-smoking", although the non-smoking dining area is larger. Sandwich took almost 30 minutes to arrive.

We had lunch at Diana's on a Saturday at noon. Diner was about 50% full. service was good. Wife and I both ordered Paninis. They did take almost 30 minutes, but the server was checking on us and giving updates. If we would have been on a lunch hour, it would have been an issue. This was the only reason we did not give Diana's an "exellent" rating. If you are looking for a quaint, interesting diner, this is a "must stop" along old route 66. Oh, BTW, the Paninis were excellent! Home made bread. AND home made chips! Wow.We ended up taking half the sandwiches home and heating them up for follow up enjoyment.

We stopped in for breakfast before leaving St. James. The owners and staff were such a friendly group, which made for an enjoyable meal. Everything about our breakfast was great - food, service and hospitality. They allowed us to park our '57 Chevy in front and may have our picture on their wall. If you're traveling the Mother Road stop in and see them!

We have become so accustomed to smoke-free restaurants that I neglected to call ahead to find out if the diner was smoke-free (it is not). The back room was less smoky than the front room, but since the two areas are connected by an open door, the smoke was difficult to escape. The food was fine-- nothing particularly great, nothing particularly bad. The service was fine as well.

The two younger waitresses were very friendly and accommodating. We ordered dessert first: the red velvet cheesecake (who figured that one out anyway??) was delicious with its layers of cheesecake then red velvet cake and with its heavy sour cream frosting. My coconut cream pie was very good but Marie Callender's frozen filling is better flavored and less heavy.

We both ordered Swiss mushroom burger plate ($4.75 for the burger and really great home-style chips) and agreed that, although really large, the patties were dry.

The feel was truly like an old-fashioned malt shop and the front door opened up to a charming slice of Route 66. I suspect that when we pass through again in a week or so we'll try out a different supper spot.
