Owner description: Don't take the name so literally. We're about fun. Not your white walls, walk around, and be quiet museum. If you want to climb around, get active with your kids or are a big kid at heart, we're the place. If you get freaked out easily, you might not want to come. We're four floors filled with miles of tunnels, a full cave system, over 30 slides, a circus, an arts area, a large outdoor climbing space, Architectural Museum, a Cabin that serves adult beverages, a Museum of Mayhem, Mirth and Mystery, and a ton more. Also, there's the roof with a Ferris Wheel and a bus hanging off its edge.

This is not a museum for adults - but spectacular for kids. We were wishing our grandkids were with us and kept saying, "wouldn't so-and-so love this?"

While planning our trip to St. Louis, I glanced through City Museum's website. I really wasn't sure if it was the kind of place two grown people could go to without kids and not get funny looks. I was so glad we decided to check it out! We were transformed into kids ourselves!! We climbed around, went down the slides, crawled through the tunnels, and had a blast! It's the sort of place where you can let kids run around and be kids (and wear themselves out!). Definitely check this one out!

I think this was our 4th visit to the City Museum. On our first trip, my daughters were about 8 and 6; they are now 13 and 11. They still love it! We have family in Southern Illinois, but we would make an occasional trip from Chicago to go to the City Museum. This is a place for ACTIVE fun. If you have younger children you will be crawling through small spaces. You can go to the website for a list of their attractions. We have never been to the aquarium since we go often to the Shedd in Chicago. If you do not get to frequent a large aquarium, I would give theirs a try. You can even purchase special hands-on tours of the Aquarium in advance. If the weather is decent, I would recommend adding the rooftop option.

If you have small kids, make sure you write your cell phone number on their wristband. Each time you go to a different area, tell them to wait by a central landmark if they get lost (the crystal in the caves, the tree outside, etc.). The staff are really good about spotting and helping lost kids.
We have seen some people wearing knee pads. That is an excellent idea for the caves. There are an endless maze of small cave tunnels to crawl through. If possible, lock your purse in the trunk of your car and just bring a phone, cash and a credit card (I suggest a zipped pocket).

You may want to bring a change of clothes or shoes for younger kids. On the roof there is a large pond-like fountain they can fall in as the walk across the stepping stones. The water tanks near the undersea mosaics have a period water drop. It is more of a mist when you are close unless you stand there to get wet as kids do.

Plan on stopping to get a snack and a drink. You will get hungry and thirsty. You can keep items in a car. You can leave and return with your wristband.

The food is decent in their small restaurant and they often have someone cooking Brats outside in good weather. If you have older kids and teens. You may want to walk East on Washington and find a local restaurant close by. If you have older kids, there is a bar near the outside are for adult beverages. The outside area is a great place to relax with a drink as the kids play.

The snack bar areas take cash. Bring quarters if you want to use the pinball machines. The circus performers work on tips.

The have a craft project area. It sounds like a good idea to do last once you are tired, BUT they often include projects with drying time (clay, paint, glue).

The times for the small circus type performances (magic show when we were there last) are posted on a chalkboard just outside the performance area. You might want to look at those times and plan ahead.

There is an old machine still in use making shoe laces that you can purchase. Check it out. Our laces are holding up very well after 14 months.

We took two boys, 5 & 6 for their birthdays and they had a blast. They loved the tunnels and mazes. We didn't do the aquarium, but my sister did and said it was not worth the extra money. Will definitely go back this summer when the roof is open.

The outside area and pond were just as beautiful as the gallery. There is also a limited amount of free parking.
