“Very historic and interesting!”
Reviewed 9 January 2014

This is a fascinating place that dates back to St. Louis beginnings. The staff and lots of volunteers were there the day I visited and they were super helpful. They have a passion for history and were happy to tell our group all about the people who have lived in the mansion over the years. They have some interesting events listed on their website. They raise money to help maintain the house.

“Wonderful historic home”
Reviewed 16 December 2013

We had previously visited this historic home, but were back in the area and decided to re-visit to take a look at the Christmas decorations in the house. A good decision! This home is truly a hidden gem, as mentioned by previous reviewers. It's a shame it seems to attract so few visitors. We were the only visitors for a tour on an early Saturday afternoon. The upside is that we got our excellent and knowledgable guide all to ourselves.

I cannot say enough about our guide. She was incredibly knowledgable, even about general St. Louis history that did not directly involve the home. She took the time to answer our varied questions, but still gave us the entire planned tour as well. The house itself is showing some decay, although everything is being beautifully preserved to the extent possible. The Worlds Fair exhibit is fascinating as well. Overall, this is, hands-down, an extraordinary historic home and one of my favorite "off the beaten track" places in St. Louis.

“Hidden gem right under our nose”
Reviewed 28 September 2013

The absolute best guided tour EVER. Myself along with my 9 & 10 year old were enamored the entire time the docent was speaking. Countless times we looked at each other in amazement at what we were learning. (Our jaws dropped hearing how women of the day took small doses of arsenic to keep their skin color as white as possible) We were allowed to ask any questions that we wanted, which made the hour and a half we were there completely interactive. (It helped that it was just the docent and the 3 of us) Every corner of the house is filled with period appropriate furnishings, much of it belonging to the DeMenil family. Absolutely fabulous! Ending up paying more than the price of admission to contribute to such a devoted group of preservationists.

“A fine old house in an old St. Louis neighborhood”
Reviewed 13 September 2013

Our tour of the Chatillion-Demeril house museum lasted about 1.5 hours and was very enjoyable. The house is well restored and furnished appropriate to the period. Our tour guide was extremely well informed and gave us a wonderful tour covering the history of the house, the neighborhood and the families that owned it. If you are in St. Louis and enjoy touring house museums be sure to take the time to see this house.

“Excellent Historic Tour”
Reviewed 9 July 2013

What a hidden treasure. This is the a wonderful, inexpensive, and historically fascinating home and tour. The docents are amazing and so informative---you get way more than you pay for on this tour. Amazing family with amazing history. Just seeing the St. Louis World's Fair exhibit alone is worth the ticket price and then some. Next to the Lemp Mansion and in a wonderfully historic district in downtown St. Louis. You'll want to drive around this area and stroll thru the many antique stores and boutiques. Fascinating area.
