“A must for those who like house museums”

We love house museums - and while it would have been nice to have an information sheet about the house's history and attributions of the stained glass and some of the beautiful antiques, we truly loved being free to walk around the elegant 42-room mansion (the third floor is currently closed), and were glad to make a donation (it's otherwise free) to the upkeep. Everything from beautiful wood floors, antique oriental rugs, beautiful paintings from many periods, period and earlier furnishings, Staffordshire blueware in the pantry, views of the St. Louis U campus from the windows, and the lovely patio our back, as well as a mosaic tile floor in the entryhall - enjoyed it all.

“Good for grown-up pretend”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 October 2012

I went to visit a friend at SLU, and the two of us decided to poke around here for about an hour. We did a self-guided tour, but ended up just exploring the place. It's basically just a beautiful, well-preserved property. Fun to walk around and pretend you're in the period, but I didn't get the impression there was much significant history behind the place. Also, the upper-most floor is some kind of glass exhibition, which I felt was out of place and spoiled the illusion. Still, worth a look if you like architecture/interior design.

“Great if you like that kinda thing”

This is definitely a place for much older children or adults. Little kids will be bored out of their minds. It's a beautiful building and the architecture is very impressive, but definitely not going to be fun for younger kids.
