Owner description: The Shrine is a beautifully retored 19th century Catholic church. St Joseph was built for German immigrants and staffed by Jesuit priests. We offer a Catholic mass every Sunday at 11am and a tour of the church follows each mass.

“Beautiful old church, rehabbing continues.”
Reviewed 22 February 2012

Beautiful old church where miracles occurred in process of declaring sainthood of ; Another priest was martyred here also. All of the work and funding of rehabbing comes from volunteers and visitors from around the world. When St. Louis was a bustling city, downtown workers came to daily Mass here. Visit on Sun. After 1030 Mass, volunteer presentation on history and art of the church/

“Exquisite architecture!”
Reviewed 17 January 2012

If you appreciate amazing architecture, especially with regard to churches, this is not to be missed. This church was established in 1843 and has been visited by tourists from all over the world. The altar is breathtaking (see photograph) and the pulpit is unlike anything I've seen. There is no charge, but you can make a donation, if you want. When we arrived, there was a note on the locked door to check with the rectory. We were warmly greeted by a woman who loves this church so much, she and her husband volunteer their services to help maintain it and the parish, even though she lives quite a distance away. She took us on an informal tour and answered our questions, without rushing us as we took many photographs of this beautiful gem that was almost destroyed. The pulpit is one of a kind and is no longer used, due to structural instability. Yet another FREE St. Louis attraction!
