The original building his both historic and beautifully maintained. The new wing is a great environment for the art and visitors. The collection is so broad and well displayed that it would take days to take it all in. One of the best things is that the gallery's organization is explained via interpretive panels. As for the folks that say, "my 3 year old could do that," give them a brush and let 'em. There is something for everyone's taste.

I have been to better museums but paid high entrance fees. This is a great museum based upon its free admission. Beautiful location in forest park. The new wing is great and the current exhibit of post WWII art is very nice. Great collection of Otto Dix on display. Surprisingly good food in the cafe too.

This lovely museum is set on a hilltop in beautiful Forest Park. Amazingly, admission is free. Excellent collections of artwork and cultural artifacts from all over the world, and from all time periods. Large, uncrowded galleries, knowledgeable staff, and everything from ancient Egypt and Assyria, to medieval armor, to Asian treasures, Impressionists, and contemporary works. Could spend the whole day wandering the galleries, with a break for a picnic overlooking the endless view from the slope in front of the museum. A treasure house, for certain.

A friend and I recently had 3 days in St Louis for site seeing and we spent most of the first day at the St Louis Art Museum. There is no admission fee. The staff at the museum were friendly and provided us with maps and suggestions on the art in each of the galleries. We did walk and walk and walk and saw the majority of the art work. Neither one of us are fans of modern or pop art but they do have a nice collection of that type of art if you are interested. We spent most of our time in the galleries with the impressionists, masters and sculptures. The lower floor has Pacific, Native American and Egyptian art available to see some of which were quite stunning visually. There are also examples of entire rooms dating to a certain time period and china, silver and furniture. You can spent an hour or a full day like we did. We did take a lunch break and had a delightful sandwich at the cafe on the lower floor. It was very good. Also I do need to mention that the gift shop on the lower floor is wonderful....one of the best I have ever seen. One more comment as I do have a walking problem and there are galleries that have comfortable seating - not just the usual hard wooden benches that you find in most art museums. Also they provide a portable cane/seat combination that you can carry with you and have a seat if you require one...and again no fee to use one of these marvels. So all in all I do give the museum 2 thumbs up.

I am a St Louis native and have been here many times. Love it! Its the perfect place to lose yourself, admire hundreds of cool art pieces and go back in time. I particularly enjoy stopping in to visit the Van Gogh's.
