The Art Museum is one of the treasures of St. Louis. Its special exhibits are often fantastic, and the permanent collection is magnificent. I love the small changing exhibits in the textile gallery, the magnificent English portraits, the Impressionists, the Asian art, the classical sculpture, and the well-selected contemporary art. There is something here for everyone. The gift shop is one of the best I have seen in any museum in the country: great jewelry and clothing, an excellent selection of art books and children's toys. Everyone on the staff is helpful, and special lectures and programs augment the art. And it's free! The basement cafe and the restaurant in the new addition have good new menus. Free parking outside, and a garage for bad weather.

Excellent option while in St. Louis. Nice collection of assorted art from different ages. Not huge like the Metropolitan in NY, but big enough to have a nice experience.

“Another freebee in St. Louis”

Great place to go and see all sorts of art. Many contemporary and American artists. Some rooms seemed warm to me, but I imagine it has to be temperature controlled for the art. Most rooms were cool. Nice way to expose kids to an art museum without breaking the bank in case they don't last long.

“You Won't Want To Leave!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 July 2014 via mobile

St. Louis is renowned for having many free or very low cost attractions (check out the Missouri Civil War Museum, for one), and here's another one. The Art Museum is free, and a dazzling place, where you think you will visit for a short while and end up staying for hours. The displays are tastefully done, and there seems to always be some kind of special exhibition. It's family friendly, but the littlest ones won't get much out of it. Seniors might find it a bit of a stretch, but with a little planning (and asking staff) accommodation can be found for tired feet. Parking is one of the few problems. With various attractions nearby, free spaces are at a premium at certain times of the day. The parking garage is $15, unless you are a member, then it's $5. I would urge membership, because this is truly a wonderful, lively, informative place. I love during the summer when they show movies on a big screen outside on Art Hill, because you can wander the museum first, then take in the movie in the fresh air. Saint Louis at its best!
