“Bad experience at the opera”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 July 2014

We attended the opera The Magic Flute. It was my wife's birthday and we spent $250 for our seats. Unfortunately a family with 3 small children (under the age of 6) sat behind us. The youngest kept kicking the back of my seat. This was a 3 hour opera. There were times we could not hear the performance due to their questions. A usher at the beginning of the second part told the parents they could go into the lobby with the children. They did not. We got up about 2/3rds of the way through. When we spoke to the house manager, they do not have a policy to restrict children from attending a costly performance. We were not given any accomodation. We left and will not go back. For the money it is a poor value.

“What a show.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 July 2014

We attended the Jackson Browne concert in the Peabody Opera House. The venue was beautiful and the staff were very accommodating. We also had dinner at the Opera House prior to the show and the food was good. Purchased advance parking at the garage next to the Opera House which was a great idea since we walked from the garage across one street and directly into the Opera House.

“Welcoming rather than intimidating”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 July 2014 via mobile

Many years have passed between my OTSL trips and the delay will not be as long next time. Every interaction with staff was characterized by genuine hospitality - from the ticket booth advising me about options for improving my seat to the ushers cheerfully escorting me to my seat at each performance.

Productions were interesting and the quality of both leads and chorus was excellent. As others have mentioned, the sight lines are good and intimate size enhances the experience.

This is not your grandmother's opera - young, old, and all ages in between can enjoy OTSL!

“Getting to be seriously good!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 July 2014

Opera Theatre of St., Louis is playing in the big leagues for summer opera this year. Based on the Wall St. Journal review, we decided to take advantage of the deal that the opera offers for three operas in one weekend, seeing 27 (the new opera based on Gertrude Stein's life in Paris with Alice B. Toklas), the Dialogue of the Carmelites and the Magic Flute. The performances of 27 and Dialogue were world class, and that of the Magic Flute was certainly OK. While the performances in Webster Grove were a little out of the way from downtown St. Louis, the actual driving time was around 20 minutes from our hotel, and thus very do-able. The venue is a part of Webster University, but the acoustics were OK in the several locations in which we were seated. The opera is making a serious bid for inclusion in the Santa Fe Opera/Glimmerglass class for summer operas, and we will certainly try to return next summer!
