We visited over the 4th of July holiday and the hotel was packed with visitors to the Fair St Louis as well as Cardinal fans. Its in a terrific location downtown with a half block walk out the back door from the west wing to the Veiled Prophet Parade route and three blocks from the Arch park. Of course, its directly across the street from the baseball park.
Our room was 726, a double double in the west wing and this had a lot of advantages. The elevators (which I'll mention in a minute) seemed to be less swamped than the east wing and they deposited you next to a back entrance which had easy access to restaurants, the ball park and the parade route.
We arrived around 10pm - after a 12 hour car ride - just as the Cardinal's game was finished and the lobby was overrun with fans lined up to go to the rooftop 360 bar on one tiny elevator. It was a bit disorienting to us as new visitors, but we knew we were in good hands. I'd called at10am to confirm that our room would be held for late arrival and at 7pm, the night manager actually called me again on my cell to say he had a great room blocked for us and to assure us that it would be held. Made the last few hours of the ride more secure to know we were headed to a comfy bed.
St Louis was experiencing the worst week of heat in years during our visit and being outside for the festivities was just plain miserable. The hotel did what they could to help people cool off. Just off the lobby, they kept huge ice cold serving jars filled with water with lemon, lime or orange slices and stocked with cups to take a refreshing drink as soon as you escaped inside from the heat. On the third day of our visit, the check in line was extensive as people from several bus tours arrived - these folks love their Cardinals - and the lobby was overrun as they all tried to check in at the same time. Out came a giant rolling cooler with a waitress serving free beer and sodas to the people in line. Kept a lot of weary people a bit happier as they waited.
The lobby area is very large, with a small bar by the entrance, and many comfy chairs and some tables and bar stools. Off to one side is a Starbucks, tiny gift shop, and self-serve yogurt place. Straight ahead and down a few steps is a larger bar with full menu. Off to the right from this is a restaurant where they serve their breakfast buffet in the morning and Imo's pizza in the evening. The breakfast buffet cost $15 and was well-stocked with everything from the typical cereal and eggs, bacon, waffles, sausage and muffins to a large array of fresh fruit. Servers at the buffet were a happy group and were a fun way to regain consciousness in the morning before braving the heat. The Imo's pizza had a very limited pizza menu, with a few subs and great salads. Strange, because the room service menu was from Imo's and had a really large selection that they said wasn't available downstairs.
Our room was an upgrade with a ball park view. During down time we amused ourselves watching the Cardinal's fans trying to find the last few spots and fill the parking lot between the hotel and the ballpark 3-4 hours before the game. Our car was in self parking caddy corner to the hotel at $14 a night - and if we'd wanted to move it during a game, its unlikely we would have found a spot when we returned. We were wondering why people came out so early in the heat to wait in line before the park even opened and then sit in the heat for an hour before the game, but I think the downtown parking situation dictates early arrival. One evening, after we came in early, we had fun ordering room service and watching the game from "left field" while it was tuned in on the tv. Much cooler than the 100 degrees at 9pm in the park.
There were a few downsides to the hotel and in one case, that's where their service shined. They skipped making up our room on our first morning there. When we returned to unmade beds and no fresh towels, we called the desk to request a makeup. It was less than a minute from when we hung up the phone to the knock on the door. We'd made out own beds, but they whisked away our used towels and brought us fresh ones. A few minutes later, the housekeeping manager knocked on the door to apologize and give us a card of apology along with passes to comp us breakfast at the buffet during our stay. Five minutes later, the phone rang with the front desk following up to be sure we'd been taken care of. WOW! A few nights later, a dripping tub was driving us all crazy - a call down stairs brought the maintenance engineer immediately and it was fixed. Again a call from the desk to be sure we were happy. I was tremendously impressed! The next day, the housekeeping manager was making the rounds as we headed out and he asked us if we'd had any additional problems. These people are serious about service!
The one downside to the hotel is the elevator situation. There are 3 to each wing. In the east wing, one is generally reserved for access to the 360 bar, leaving 2 for guests. There are people stationed at the elevators to ensure orderly access. In the west wing, we had 3 elevators as well. During our trip, only 2 were running and there were extensive waits to go down as elevators would arrive full from upper floors. We searched and found the service elevators behind a door marked Staff Only and began using them. They had no AC - but they were much quicker! On the day we checked out another elevator went out of service and they actually posted signs directing guests to the service elevators. There was often a line waiting to go up, but nothing as bad as the east wing elevators.
Between the convenient location, the super-attentive staff, and the clean and comfortable room, I'll definitely stay here again!
