I've been coming here for years. This place is a gem in south Springfield. Helpful staff and wonderful interpretive features in the building. The trails are well-maintained.

My only negative comment is about the runners. Many runners do not respect the posted hours that running is prohibited. Some runners are quite rude and expect walkers to get out of their way. I have been almost knocked to the ground twice. The Center staff have told me that one walker was knocked to the ground and a bone broken by a runner. Center staff tell me they are powerless to enforce regulations about runners.

Some of the state's regional nature centers do not permit running. The ones that do permit running either have special trails designated for runners or have a very large area and multiple trails. The Springfield Conservation Nature Center has a very small acreage and narrow trails that are heavily used by walkers. Running has no place on these trails and needs to be prohibited altogether. It is incompatible with the size and purpose of this nature center area.

Went on 4th of July weekend. had a great time here and my kids really enjoyed the hike we went on. The conservation center building was very nice and had some neat wildlife displays that were very informative. There is also an inside observation area where you can watch wildlife up close (the day we went, we say lots of squirrels, many species of birds, and some wild turkeys).
The trail we took when we walked the park was very nice as well. The trail was heavily wooded in most places with a couple of open area. We also walked next to a creek in the park and we were able to see some perch and bass in the creek, as the water in the creek was quite clear. We also encountered several deer on the trail. The trail we took led us to a part of Lake Springfield, where we were able to clearly see small schools of bass. We also saw a rather large alligator snapping turtle as well. Just FYI...the trail we took went down a hill and at the bottom of the hill was Galloway Creek and Lake Springfield. When heading back up the hill, it climb was a little steep in places but by no means impossible, would also recommend either wearing tennis shoes or hiking shoes. You will also likely, depending on when you go, locals either walking or running the trail, though the people we saw on the trail were very friendly and polite. An overall neat experience that one should take in if they have time while in Springfield. Would definitely like to go back
