“What a joy --- food to CROW about!”
Reviewed 23 August 2013

The hotel is fine and clean and very welcoming by all the staff. THE REAL JOY was the meals in the restaurant where STEPHEN's food could not be faulted. Rarely our party of six seasoned and selective EATERS have actually asked for a chef and clapped his efforts. The whole experience was repeated on two nights. Sadly he had an evening off on the third night and WE had been spoiled by superb food and attention to detail. The food was as good as any top class establishment in southern England from six very experienced foodies.
Well done on such a splendid food and service. Worth waiting for!!! Order your food and relax--- it is prepared FOR you. Not mass produced rubbish experienced in most places.
Food you should Crow about!!!!!!

A tired hotel that doesn't live up to its own expectations. I guessed what was coming as I climbed the stairs, the threadbare edges were just a portent of what was to come. Tired and outdated decor, and a bedroom carpet that could do with a damn good shampooing. The centre-hinged window looked as if it had NEVER been cleaned outside and it wouldn't stay open. There isn't a window or extractor to the en-suite shower/toilet room, hot water took an age to arrive and the shower had a fixed head so I couldn't take it off to wash my "lower regions". Oh, and a loud extractor (from the kitchens?) that started up just outside the window at 7:25 didn't help either.
The bar seemed to be the local pub, so there would never be room for many guests to use it as well.
The first floor corridors are like a maze, in a fire or smoke situation I doubt very much if everyone would find their way out. I saw little indication of a fire exit, and if it hadn't been left propped open for fresh air I wouldn't have known that there was one. Not good.
The food was quite acceptable, despite the waitress not writing our order down so our steaks were mixed up when they arrived, but the last morning's breakfast was the worst. A very dusty teapot arrived at the table towards the end of the meal, well after we wanted it, and the waitress turned her back on me and walked off as I was asking for more toast and butter - it did come, so she must have heard me.
So some rooms are being refurbished? perhaps that will improve things a bit, but the whole setup needs to be picked up and given a good shake before it succumbs to the apathy it presently displays.

Room Tip: Make sure you ask for a refurbished one - if there aren't any available, go elsewhere.

Dear LloydPenfold,

Thanks very much for taking the time to review our hotel following your stay with us in 2013.

As a family business we appreciate all feedback received and take on board our guests comments to constantly strive to make their experience as enjoyable as possible.

As you quite rightly mentioned in your review, in 2013 we took on a massive refurbishment of the rooms, which has made a huge improvement to the standard of the accommodation we offer our guests. The feedback we have received on these new rooms has been fantastic and we hope that in 2014 we will be able to bring all the remaining rooms up to the same very high standard. Our prices still remain extremely competitive and allow our guests to achieve a real sense of value for money when staying with us.

Whilst this work takes place in the background, it is still business as usual, and as many of our locals and regulars have come to know and expect from us, an excellent standard of customer service is delivered by all our staff.

We would like to close by thanking you for choosing to stay at the Pitfirrane and hope that in the future, should you decide to return, you will see the results of all our hard work.

Kind regards,

Hotel Management and Staff

Stayed overnight due to a visit to the Military Tattoo on 10th August. After a 6 hour long drive, check in was easy and the young lady on the reception desk was more than helpful and very polite. We never found anything wrong with this hotel, we had a lovely breakfast. Can't comment on the meals as we didn't have an evening meal there. We would definitely stay again, some people will complain about anything. If you want a 5 star hotel then pay extra for one!!! No complaints from us at all! Many thanks for your hospitality (all staff) from Diane and Shaune Rhoades, Grimsby

I was staying in one of the old rooms, next to the rooms with work being done on them. The ceiling was peeling, the carpet had several marks and yup, they are doing the right thing by refurbishing this place. The room wasn't dirty.

But I have to say, the price I paid (65 pounds per night including breakfast for two people) was pretty awesome, considering that Fringe was going on.

The people who work there are very friendly and I thought the food was pretty good and I don't eat meat or dairy or eggs (vegan) and still enjoyed it.

I wouldn't mind spending a few nights in here again at all. Once the refurbishment is finished, it should be great!

Room Tip: Request a new room.

I ordered my meal as most tables around me were complaining about there's, what made it worse I heard the waitress twice telling customers the chef Steve was not very good, not very encouraging, has she had any staff training. When my meal arrived after waiting 45 mins the lasagne was cold. My desert of vanilla ice cream was then brought to the table as chocolate ice cream what a shambles and I am still waiting on a call from the manager as he was not working on one of there busiest nights of the week. Stay well clear from this place as they must have lost some custom last Sat night.

Dear James_SS8382OY,

Thanks very much for taking the time to review our restaurant following your stay with us in 2013.

As a family business we appreciate all feedback received and take on board our guests comments to constantly strive to make their experience as enjoyable as possible.

It is with deep regret we learn that things were not as they should have been and that the service and standard our customers have come to know and expect from us fell short on this occasion.

We are constantly delivering customer service training to our staff and regularly receive compliments on this from our locals and guests.

With regards our cuisine, all dishes are home cooked and of very high standard so it is with disappointment that we read that on this outing it did not impress. Your feedback has been passed to our chefs to take forward, and for your disappointment please accept our sincere apologies.

We hope that should you choose to return to us in the future you would be impressed by our on-going efforts to deliver an excellent experience to our customers.

family and friends of ours booked and stayed here last weekend (3rd Aug) whilst travelling all the way from the borders and up north for a family party. I have to say I was totally mortified when on sunday i learned of all the problems they had experienced.
It would appear that one price is charged for a double or twin room regardless of whether you get a refurbished room or not. My mum had booked her room way before the the other 4 rooms of our party and yet 2 of these got refurbished rooms whilst she ended up in a room with endless issues.

People should be offered a lower price on the basis of getting a non refurbished room, though that said it would not excuse the beds having springs poking through your back!

The farce with the fire alarm on the sunday morning was appalling and then having a wake up call system where the staff knock on the door at least twice waking up the whole corridor is a joke. If people ask for a phone call to wake up and they dont answer then its their problem.

i am bitterly disappointed and feel responsible for our friends/family booking this after we recommended it from eating in the restaurant. if the AA have not rated this 3* in 2012 or 2013 they should not be allowed to state this as their rating.

Room Tip: if you can guarantee a refurbished room it may be ok but otherwise the premier inn at halbeath is te...

I stayed at the hotel for 2 nights and was very disappointed with my stay.
The bed was very uncomfy and the sheets on the bed were dirty, and therefore don't think the sheets on the bed had been changed. The floor in my room had not been hoovered and the cups had a coffee ring around them, I don't think the rooms get clean cups after each guest.

The bathroom was very unclean and extremely unhygienic. My bath had dirt lying on the bed of it, my toilet had faeces stuck all around the toilet and the room had no toilet brush in it. My sink was clean but had no hand soap and I had no toilet roll in the bathroom.

I did not eat any of the food in the restaurant as my room was very unhygienic so did not want to eat the food from the kitchen.

The staff on reception were lovely and I received satisfactory service.

This was not my type of hotel and I wouldn't stay again.
