“Good staff can't make up for basic failings.”
Reviewed 2 January 2014

We were told on arrival that the hotel was being renovated and this was certainly obvious. However, the management seemed not to want to miss the chance of making money and were still offering rooms which smelt of paint while the corridors outside were part pained and uncarpeted with bare boards as floors. These were made hazardous by still having nails sticking up through the surface. The 'undecorated' rooms were well past their best, ours had a couple of sheets of wallpaper hanging loose - they flapped when the door was opened. The stair carpets were bare and public areas were well past their sell by date.
The staff worked hard and always tried to help but they simply have too much to do to overcome the Hotel's failings and seemed to get little or no support from the owner who was notable by his absence when the buildings were in such a mess.

Dear Truediamond,

Thanks very much for taking the time to review our hotel following your recent stay with us.

As a family business we appreciate all feedback received and take on board our guests comments to constantly strive to make their experience as enjoyable as possible.

As you rightly mentioned in 2013 we took on a massive refurbishment of the rooms, which has made a huge improvement to the standard of the accommodation we offer our guests. The feedback we have received on these new rooms has been fantastic and we hope that in 2014 we will be able to bring all the remaining rooms up to the same very high standard.

Obviously it is unavoidable that in this time there will be a small amount of inconvenience caused whilst the work takes place, but we have ensured that it is as minimal as possible, and where relevant signage is up to advise guests of the changes that are happening in the hotel.

In the meantime it is still business as normal, and as many of our locals and regulars have come to know and expect from us, an excellent standard of customer service is received from all our staff.

We would like to close by thanking you for choosing to stay at the Pitfirrane and hope that in the future, should you decide to return, you will see the results of all our hard work.

Best wishes for 2014.

Disgusting ! no real window in room, except for a small opening 4 inches from ceiling, just enough to let some air and light come in. kept on thinking...what happens in case of a fire?
And the mattresses? Didn't know they still exist - hard spring mattresses with no protection on them whatsoever, just a white sheet thrown over them, which spoil your sleep after a whole day out.
And the bathroom? no toiletries, except for a small round soap on the wash hand basin. the shower water could not even be regulated to warm, ONLY HOT !! Just imagine!
When we complained about the room, the reply we got was : " Sorry, we are fully booked, we cannot change the room."

Our reply: " Sorry, you should have told us that before you confirmed our booking, and before taking all the amount due before we even arrived!"

Room Tip: I would surely not give a second chance.

I booked this hotel for several guests in my travelling party back in January 2013. From the outside the hotel looks very charming( being set in a village adds to its outer appearance) , but inside soon crashed its exterior image. On arrival we were informed that one of our double rooms had now been changed to a family room consisting of a set of bunk beds and two single beds. Although not happy with this change, without any prior notice, we went ahead and accepted it with the promise of a partial or full refund. The room shower was leaking constantly and the interior stank of air freshener ( as did all our booked rooms) , and the beds were ok but not great. In total for the Friday evening we had three double rooms and a single booked.. We were told by the young receptionist that we would have to wait to see if a different guest ( who only booked a few weeks ago) was going to confirm their booking of a double room. After a few minutes of debate we stated that we had booked and paid in january for our rooms and were entitled to the room. only after stating our intention to cancel all our bookings did we get the room.
The single room again stank of air freshener but was in good condition . One of the double rooms was pretty nice , but again stank of air freshener. My own particular double room needs serious refurbishment ( I think it is in line to be done) was a bit tattered , looked onto someone's back garden that was full of wood off cuts and uncut grass. Again stinking of air freshener but was clean and surprisingly comfortable.
The rest of my team arrived on the Saturday and one member was told there was no room for him...then surprisingly sent him to a room that already had one of my team in it. This was sorted reasonably quickly and the room was allocated to us.

Note to hotel manager / owner. It's no fun when people stand outside your bedroom window smoking and chatting at any time let alone the wee small hours. It doesn't look good either considering this is the reception entrance. You have two outdoor drinking areas and I suggest that you allocate one of them as guests smoking areas. The porter can see from his desk , or CCTV, people hanging around reception doors smoking and should direct them elsewhere.

It looks like the whole hotel is undergoing refurbishment and has potential to be a nice establishment. I would be interested in seeing it when it is complete. Please please please tell your cleaning staff to lay of the air freshener...it makes guests think there is something to hide as well as being unpleasant.

The bar area is full of locals ( very vociferous locals) and has a good range of well priced drinks. Breakfast was really good and choice was great. I hope this hotel can get its act together like its sister hotel in Dunfermline.

Room Tip: Ask to be sited away from car park smoking area

The hotel is fine and clean and very welcoming by all the staff. THE REAL JOY was the meals in the restaurant where STEPHEN's food could not be faulted. Rarely our party of six seasoned and selective EATERS have actually asked for a chef and clapped his efforts. The whole experience was repeated on two nights. Sadly he had an evening off on the third night and WE had been spoiled by superb food and attention to detail. The food was as good as any top class establishment in southern England from six very experienced foodies.
Well done on such a splendid food and service. Worth waiting for!!! Order your food and relax--- it is prepared FOR you. Not mass produced rubbish experienced in most places.
Food you should Crow about!!!!!!

A tired hotel that doesn't live up to its own expectations. I guessed what was coming as I climbed the stairs, the threadbare edges were just a portent of what was to come. Tired and outdated decor, and a bedroom carpet that could do with a damn good shampooing. The centre-hinged window looked as if it had NEVER been cleaned outside and it wouldn't stay open. There isn't a window or extractor to the en-suite shower/toilet room, hot water took an age to arrive and the shower had a fixed head so I couldn't take it off to wash my "lower regions". Oh, and a loud extractor (from the kitchens?) that started up just outside the window at 7:25 didn't help either.
The bar seemed to be the local pub, so there would never be room for many guests to use it as well.
The first floor corridors are like a maze, in a fire or smoke situation I doubt very much if everyone would find their way out. I saw little indication of a fire exit, and if it hadn't been left propped open for fresh air I wouldn't have known that there was one. Not good.
The food was quite acceptable, despite the waitress not writing our order down so our steaks were mixed up when they arrived, but the last morning's breakfast was the worst. A very dusty teapot arrived at the table towards the end of the meal, well after we wanted it, and the waitress turned her back on me and walked off as I was asking for more toast and butter - it did come, so she must have heard me.
So some rooms are being refurbished? perhaps that will improve things a bit, but the whole setup needs to be picked up and given a good shake before it succumbs to the apathy it presently displays.

Room Tip: Make sure you ask for a refurbished one - if there aren't any available, go elsewhere.

Stayed overnight due to a visit to the Military Tattoo on 10th August. After a 6 hour long drive, check in was easy and the young lady on the reception desk was more than helpful and very polite. We never found anything wrong with this hotel, we had a lovely breakfast. Can't comment on the meals as we didn't have an evening meal there. We would definitely stay again, some people will complain about anything. If you want a 5 star hotel then pay extra for one!!! No complaints from us at all! Many thanks for your hospitality (all staff) from Diane and Shaune Rhoades, Grimsby

I was staying in one of the old rooms, next to the rooms with work being done on them. The ceiling was peeling, the carpet had several marks and yup, they are doing the right thing by refurbishing this place. The room wasn't dirty.

But I have to say, the price I paid (65 pounds per night including breakfast for two people) was pretty awesome, considering that Fringe was going on.

The people who work there are very friendly and I thought the food was pretty good and I don't eat meat or dairy or eggs (vegan) and still enjoyed it.

I wouldn't mind spending a few nights in here again at all. Once the refurbishment is finished, it should be great!

Room Tip: Request a new room.
