My parents started coming to Lone Mountain Ranch 30 years ago after my mother read an article about the Ranch in The New York Times. They had been cross country skiing at various resorts and were excited by the review. After their first year here they never went anywhere else, coming back almost every season from then on. My husband and I and our 2 children joined my father 8 years ago and fell in love with the Ranch--the staff, the food, the mountains--everything. It is a special place for all of us. Each year when we return it feels like coming home again. We love our cabin--relaxing by a fire each late afternoon before heading to the saloon to reconnect with the friends we have made who also return year after year and meet new guests. And we love the stillness of the early mornings as we get ready to head out on the spectacularly beautiful trails. An optional trip into Yellowstone ( a winter wonderland!) is an extra added treat. The staff is great--so relaxed and genuine and yet so concerned with making each stay for each guest a memorable one. Our children are a third generation of Lone Mountain guests and we hope to enjoy this unique place with them for years to come.

And my husband loves the bacon!

Our family has been coming to Lone Mountain Ranch for a week in February for the past eight years for the x-c skiing and the entire experience. Before that we would spend a few days at Royal Gorge's Wilderness Lodge (before it burned down back in October 2003). The first year we were scrambling to find an alternative to RG and found out about LMR through Cross-Country Skiing magazine. We are so pleased that we found LMR! Comfortable cabins in a variety of configurations that have met our family's changing needs as the children have grown older. Hearty meals (3 every day) that are a necessity after an active day of skiing. Special staff who really care about the quality of your stay. Friends that we have made over the years whom we look forward to seeing. An extensive x-country trail network that starts right outside your door. Good selection of x-c skiing and snowshoe equipment if you don't bring your own. Easy access to Big Sky/Moonlight Basin if you prefer downhill skiing. West Yellowstone only about an hour away if you want to see the Park in winter, which we enjoy. We are looking forward to our ninth year of skiing in February 2012.

Friends convinced us to try a nordic skiing trip in February instead of our usual excursions south. We arrived at Lone Mountain Ranch and were greeted by four feet of snow and a very friendly, helpful staff. We could ski right out our comfortable cabin's front door onto 100km of beautifully groomed, very scenic trails. The skiing at LMR was by far the best nordic skiing we have experienced.

Like many places these days, LMR has gone through ownership changes and trying business conditions. None of this has been allowed to affect the guest's experience. A young couple (Mark and Kim) are managing LMR and they, along with their staff, couldn't have been more accommodating. They went out of their way to organize a Super Bowl party for the guests.

It was obvious that the staff loves the ranch and wants to do their part to insure its success. We met many friendly people who had been coming to LMR for well over 20 years. Two couples had been coming for 29 years. The socialization was fun and interesting.

Our 10 day stay at LMR was an upscale, unique and memorable experience. We highly recommend Lone Mountain Ranch.

We've spent a week skiing at Lone Mountain Ranch for the past 12 years, and though we've tried other cross-country ski places in Colorado, none could compare with Lone Mountain Ranch. Skiing is generally superb, depending on the weather, of course, and 100 kilometers of groomed ski trails (never crowded) offer a lot of variety in setting and ability. The beauty and peacefulness of the ranch in winter can't be overstated. It would be impossible to find a more attentive staff, the food is excellent, the rental ski equipment very good and reasonably priced. Cute cabins range from cozy to a bit tired in decor, but the excellent beds, good lighting, fireplace or pot-bellied stove, and careful daily cleaning make the experience just fine. Ski lessons are available, as well as day trips to ski or just tour Yellowstone in winter. Also, Wi-Fi is accessible, and gentle yoga is led by a expert three times a week.

Going to LMR has become my favorite getaway. The xcountry skiing is incredible, but so is the service from the staff. Many staff work there for years, so they remember me when I return. And beyond the skiing, there is the food. Incredibly tasty, hearty, really good wines. I still remember the game platter of bison, elk, and smoked trout. And the Mexican chocolate bread pudding at lunch. I love that there are no tvs in the cabins, since this helps me really get away and just enjoy being there in Big Sky, which is a really special area. Where else are you going to xcountry ski right up on a herd of 20 Elk, which I was able to do on my final day of this recent stay? Go. Enjoy.

We went to Lone Mountain Ranch for the Sleigh Ride Dinner and decided to take advantage of their Sleigh and Stay package We live near Lone Mountain but this was our first experience staying here and it was well worth it! What a great way to spend a weekend (or a week if you have time). Lone Mountain Ranch is about a 45 minute drive from Bozeman, MT and about 15 minutes from Big Sky Resort. The package includes the Sleigh Ride Dinner, one nights lodging and breakfast.
The Sleigh Ride dinner was very good (complete with Prime Rib, great veggies and cheesecake), the sleigh ride itself was fun and the musical entertainment made the evening.
Our cabin (Chipmunk) was small, cozy, quiet and had all the amenities we needed.
And breakfast the next morning had a great variety of hot and cold food in a beautiful lodge setting.
If you do decide to Cross Country Ski (which we did,) they have some of the best in Montana, maybe in the Northwest. The trail map is easy to follow whether on skis or snowshoes and the views are spectacular. A great getaway for couples, families and friends! I would go back in a minute!

We stayed at Lone Mountain Ranch for four nights and it was terrific. We fly fished with one of their guides for three days and absolutely loved it. The setting in Big Sky is spectacular! The Lone Mountain Ranch staff are exceptional. Every single staff member went out of his or her way to make our stay comfortable and welcoming. The cabin was very nice with soft towels and all the amenities. The food was very good, especially for the area. The breakfast is by far the best meal. Dinner is quite good and you can't beat the atmosphere in the dining lodge. The packed lunch from their lunch bar for day trips is just okay. Although it is expensive to stay at Lone Mountain, we felt it was definitely worth it and would love to go back. (FYI: Yellowstone National Park is not as close as one might think; it is approximately 45 miles away).
