I had some time to kill before an afternoon flight so walked across the parking lot to the Yellowstone County Museum. First of all, you walk right into history because the museum is in a little cabin that was used by some cattle-baron 100 years ago or so.

The exhibits are enjoyable and easy to see. I loved the chuckwagon -- and how they ever got that into the basement of the museum I will never know -- it is huge!

Their exhibit on Indian beadwork was amazing. And the staff person there (Ben) was so helpful in explaining to me the different types beadwork, and quill work and the history.

A hidden gem in Billings ... and its free!

somedaytoeurope, we're so glad you had time to stop by! It's always fun to see people walk in dragging luggage behind them. I'm glad that we provided a better atmosphere than the airport lobby!

Our chuck wagon is one of my favorite pieces too. Either we had to build the basement walls around it or had to take it apart piece by piece because it is certainly too large to fit through those doorways!

I'll be sure to tell Ben that you enjoyed talking with him! He's always happy to talk with people about our beautiful collection.

Next time your flight runs late be sure to stop in again! It's always fun to see familiar faces come through the door.

This is not the largest museum around, but when you first drive up it looks downright tiny -- until you enter and find out there is a basement level to it.

However, it is free admission, and well worth an hour or so to visit. The exhibits are well done and informative, and there are lots of interesting photos, plus a real chuckwagon that has been preserved.

To get there you go to the Billings airport, and drive right through the passenger drop-off area, then back around the parking area, and the museum is just before you exit the airport grounds.
