Great modern art museum and first class / world class facility. Very interesting exhibits and wonderful display space Wasn't sure about the outer building and it was locked when we visited. Along with western heritage center, Peter yegen Yellowstone county log cabin museum and moss mansion great places to visit.

3 hours off the plane and I was "at the YAM"!! what a great, fresh, innovative museum! Every form of art had representation. The staff was so friendly and helpful! I'll be sure to go back when I'm in Billings again!

Absolutely a gem in our community. The art in YAM is quality and the shows are always thought-provoking and well done. I love the focus on western art and absolute attention to detail. Excellent program in Montana. We are blessed to have this museum in Billings.

This museum is an incredible gem in Billings. We went to see the "Uncommon Ground" collection which has the war shirt worn by Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce, as well as Western art by Charlie Russell, JK Ralston, and Frederick Remington. This is absolutely not a western only art museum. Their collections and exhibitions are diverse, challenging, and wide-ranging. I have seen Deborah Butterfield, Picasso, Miro, Manet, and the work of many fine contemporary artists, sculptors and mixed media artists. One of the best aspects of the YAM is the Visible Vault, a building in which their permanent collection is stored and in which their artist in residence works. Patrons follow a concrete stream to the vault from the main museum building. The visible vault means that the art doesn't disappear into the dark. it has a life, even when not on display. There are fantastic kinetic sculptures in both venues as well. The docents are friendly and helpful and most importantly, approachable. This museum never fails to entertain, challenge, and engage. Well worth the trip!

The museum is on the small side but there were several different types of exhibits. They also had a silent auction with local artists and a children's section from the area schools. Price was reasonable and I even found an artist whose work I particularly enjoyed. Overall above average experience.
