The trailhead is just off the Gallatin River...which is GORGEOUS and which I WILL be rafting down next trip. The hike is 6 miles round trip and pretty steep. The view at the top is so worth it. Coming from Florida, and this being my first hike, I did have to get used to the elevation a bit...but it's a beautiful hike and you'll want to stop and take pictures along the way for sure. I didn't see any bears...but bringing the bear spray and being knowledgeable is important. Saw a pica and a deer along the way. The sound of Lava creek along the way is a nice hiking soundtrack.. Highly recommend this hike.

The time we went is in May and not an ideal time to fish. But the driving conditions seem fine and beautiful! I would suggest in the summer and early fall time would be the best for fishing. Many turn offs you can park along with a few RV campsites to choose from after big sky. One of the best places to fish and many miles of it. Make sure you top your gas off at either Bozeman or West Yellowstone before driving on 191. Get your camera out too.

Absolutely great fly fishing...even in the winter. Fast running water through the Gallatin Canyon provide abundant trout fishing. River has many easy access points along the highway which parallels the road for the most part through the canyon. Worth a stop on the way to Yellowstone. Scenery alone is worth the trip. Visitors don't forget to get a license. You can do it on-line or stop at one of the many outfitters alone the way.

A great, easily accessible river. Just pull off highway 191 almost anywhere just South of Gallatin Gateway to Yellowstone National Park. Don't forget if you fish in YNP portion of the Gallatin you will need a permit from the Park
