Owner description: Montana Grizzly Encounter is a grizzly bear rescue and educational sanctuary.

My husband and I stumbled upon this bear rescue sanctuary while on a road trip through Montana and were very skeptical about this place at first blush. However, after hearing their stories about saving these bears that were held in captivity throughout the U.S. and therefore can no longer be released into the wild, we felt much differently. The staff is very knowledgeable and you can sense the love they have for these bears. $8 per person price was well worth the money and goes to a good cause. Well worth the stop! Some great photos of grizzlies from a safe distance too.

I have seen dozens of black and grizzly bears in the wild while hunting. Fortunately none ever were threatening. While seeing a sow and her 1 year old for 30 minutes at a range of 200 yards with binoculars is educational [these animals can disappear by merely stepping into an area such as a hole made by a fallen tree's root ball...digging for food, to abruptly reappear as if from no where in 10 minutes], most will never see such things in the wild and so for my spouse this offered a first opportunity to see the bears, and observe the for hours if you wish, at close range. Well worth it, the ticket was good for two days in a row. They show different pairs of bears in the morning, changing in the afternoon. So by timing we saw 4. DO NOT expect a Hollywood presentation....this is Montana and the way locals prefer it, so while the speaker's voice may be monotone, trust me he knows his stuff. After a presentation, there is time to ask questions.

Much better than your typical zoo

grizzly encounter allows you to get up close to the Bears

the guys that own the place are super knowledgeable and have one grizzly story after the next definitely worth the trip

When we were there the Bears were super active wrestling growling ripping apart trees

I have visited the Montana Grizzly Encounter (MGE) a couple of times, and each time I come away with an even greater appreciation for these magnificent animals and the folks that strive to protect them. The MGE is easily accessed from I-90. MGE currently houses 4 grizzly bears who have been rescued out of bad situations and brought here to be provided and cared for, as well as loved deeply by the folks that own and operate the facility. The bears each have a separate den adjoining the outdoor enclosure and are rotated out into the enclosure daily, usually Jake and Maggie together, and Brutus and Sheena together. The enclosure provides a clean, natural setting with trees, rocks, and ponds for the bears well-being. The staff provide all sorts of enrichment for the bears as well. There is a large viewing area along one end of the enclosure where visitors can observe the bears at play. Ami and Bill are on hand to answer questions, and Bill does an awesome job providing a very educational, yet fun presentation. There are picnic tables, chairs and benches, and a portable toilet for visitor comfort. The facility also houses a small gift shop. Guest are welcome to stay as long as they like, and the entrance fee is more than reasonable. Anyone traveling the I-90 corridor through Bozeman really should consider stopping. You won't regret it.

As we did not see bears in Yellowstone, we decided to stop by this refuge. It was clean (not fancy) and the owner was very enlightening on bears. Two bears were out for viewing (Jake & Maggie) and they were fun to watch. It is small - don't expect a zoo - but it was a nice way to see the bears up close and learn about them.
