Have your camera ready because each place that Mark/ Nicole take you, is breathtaking. To see and experience the mine, walk Mercury St, pass the mansions and churches, you will be in complete awe of Buttes beauty. Mark has dedicated himself to the history in Butte and Montana and it is absolutely the most amazing thing you will ever experience. Make it a point to stop at the copper shop across from the mall for your souvenirs. Mark knows where it is. I promise you, your tour will be the highlight of your trip.

It is simply the best feeling to know that a good friend understands why we live here in Butte, MT. It is also fantastic to show them the town, relate the history, and watch their excitement as they take it all in. And we always have an open door for you, Sandy, as we know, as usual, you will be returning to Butte again!

In my experience there are two essential components to a really good guided tour: (1) the tour guide must have an encyclopedic knowledge of the subject matter, such that an extemporaneous discussion of any aspect of it is really interesting, and (2) the tour guide must have such enthusiasm and love for the subject matter that it becomes contagious and positively infects the tour participants. Mark Reavis and his wife Nicole von Gaza have both of these qualities in spades. On May 10th they give my five companions and me a custom tour of Butte that I am sure none of us will ever forget. They met us while we were finishing an excellent lunch at an Uptown restaurant (a local institution) that Mark had recommended. We headed out, wrapped in blankets and plastic tarps, in two golf carts, into a spring snowstorm. Neither the snow nor temperatures in the '30s could dampen their and our enthusiasm. But when the snowfall got heavy they took us indoors for ninety minutes to wait it out with hot tea and coffee and a completely spontaneous discussion about any aspect of Butte that any of us wished to discuss. In the course of that conversation I learned such things as what the locals REALLY thought of Evil Knievel and what REALLY happened to the trestle that Frank Little was lynched from. From there we headed up to the Anselmo Mine works just above Uptown Butte. Although fenced and locked private property, Mark has free access to it for tours. He showed us every building and structure on the property, explaining the purpose and function of each. We ended in the hoist house, where he explained the operation of the various pieces of gargantuan machinery still intact inside. While I believe I previously had a pretty good understanding of the mechanics of underground copper mining, I had never before had such a thorough explanation of day-to-day mining operations. Nor had I previously grasped the astonishing magnitude of such operations in Butte. I came away humbled and in awe of the lives those miners had led. Our tour then continued through the commercial an residential districts of Uptown Butte until we were exhausted and hungry and told Mark and Nicole we could go no further. Our ninety minute tour lasted from about 1:30 until a little after 5:00, and I have no doubt that Mark and Nicole would have directed us to the best restaurant in Uptown for dinner, and then taken us for an evening bar-hopping tour had we wished it. Butte has long been one of my favorite places, and thanks to Mark and Nicole I am confident that my five companions now truly understand what a special place it is, and why I love it so much. You simply can't ask for better than that.

This was definitely a tour that will live on in our memory for a long time! We so appreciated your adventurous spirits during this crazy spring snowstorm tour! It was an added bonus to get to sit and chat for awhile and get to know you guys more. This is why we love what we do so much. To share Butte's history and meet new friends in the process. Simply priceless. We hope to see you again, because as you know, there is A LOT more to see and do and learn about here in Butte, MT!!

Absolutely the most informative and enjoyable tour we've taken! The tour guide was knee deep in info on all aspects of Butte. He was also a great personality! The golf cart was enclosed and had heated bricks for under your feet! We also stopped for "matchsticks"(hot cocoa and some sort of liquor) Amazing! The best decision we have made on our trip to Montana this winter! Enjoy!!!

This group offers many different types of tours because Butte is just so incredibly rich in history and character. We took a ghost tour. First off, imagine an old mine yard where a shaft plummets hundreds of feet underground and the framework for hoisting cars of men and ore up and down it rises eerily a few hundred feet above you. There are several such mine yards with outbuildings, and at one in particular it wasn't the least bit hard to imagine hearing miners talking and laughing, opening and slamming shut their lockers as they end their long shifts down in the dark and heat. But then, there's just so much more: a spooky old hospital, turn-of the-century mansions, haphazard arrangements of shanties tucked into and on top of what's (quite correctly) deemed The Richest Hill On Earth. And, more again: an old, quite undeniable red-light district and remnants of an old China town. This tour had everything, including a knowledgeable and fun tour guide! Would we go on another tour? In a heartbeat!

The B.U.S.T tour is an absolutely spectacular way to get an insider’s view of Butte and to learn about the city’s history in depth. The tour was recommended by a local who told us that whatever focus we would like, Mark would tailor the tour to it. He did just that, asking what we had already seen and what we were interested in when we first met him and then tailoring our route as he gauged our interests through the tour. Mark clearly has tremendous passion for Butte history and has so much knowledge and so many great stories that he shares in a most engaging and fun way. He helped us to understand connections between the history and people of Butte and their effect on other areas of Montana and the West. The stories that he told about the buildings and the people who lived here really come alive and just as compelling is his discussion about present-day preservation efforts in the town. I thought I wouldn’t like being driven around but the golf cart was a great way to cruise through the many alleys to hear stories and get the feel of the things that happened “out back”. And we saw so much more than one could see on foot. This tour was the icing on the cake of our visit to Butte. We left feeling much more connected to the town and looking forward to our next visit (and B.U.S.T. tour) so that we can learn even more. Brilliant!!
