Owner description: The Dumas Brothel is located in the heart of the old Red-Light district in Uptown Butte, Montana USA. Built in 1890, the Dumas' sole purpose was to serve the predominately male population that sprang out of Butte's mining boom. As a house of prostitution, it operated for 92 years until its closure in 1982, making it America's longest running "house of ill-repute." As the only brothel remaining in Butte Montana, the Dumas is now a museum & antique shop. Tours of the Dumas brothel are available year-round, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Dumas is also the last vestige of the Victorian Brothel style architecture existing in the United States today. Since 2012, the new owner's have been diligently working to preserve, restore, and protect the 126 year old iconic structure from meeting its demise. Butte's Red-Light district was the largest and most expansive in the West, and visiting the Dumas Brothel recalls a time when vice was key to Butte's rise to prominence, second only to its success as a mining metropolis.

The perceptive visitor may notice that there are 3 bullet holes still visible in the front of the building, apparently from a woman who shot up the building in the late 1970's (thinking her husband's car was spotted at the brothel!). The tour begins with a visit to the gift shop, offering typical keepsakes for visitors. There is an old 1980's Pepsi vending machine offering soda's and bottled water, and ice cream bars for sale as well, which was great as it was nearly 90 degrees outside the day we visited and nothing else around offering such refreshments. The building is quite old, showing many signs of its intended use as a brothel, and the rooms are filled with antique beds, and other brothel related items which the owners have set up throughout the "hotel". We especially enjoyed visiting the "crib" system in the basement where prostitutes plied there trade for nearly a century. This area is especially eery and offers a true vision into the hierarchy that existed here. The only drawback for us was that the halls are narrow throughout the building, and with 8 of us it was difficult for everyone to follow along all at once. The owner did a superlative job telling us the stories and history of the brothel, and the entire "redlight district" that once existed in Butte, Montana. He certainly knows his history! What a hoot!

“The Dumas Brothel took us back in time!”
Reviewed 21 July 2013

What a neat piece of history:) We were greeted with a very knowledegable tour guide and given a ride back through time! The building is old and the second you walk through the door it's almost like you stepped into the early 1900's. There was definately a feeling of being watched by a ghost but that made it even more interesting! We will definately be back and look forward to seeing it when all the renovations are complete.

“Well, we certainly got screwed......”
Reviewed 3 July 2013 via mobile

We've had the opportunity to tour several brothels and they have always been a lot of fun....until now.
The Dumas, despite it being advertised as reopened is still better then 3/4 closed off from the public and under construction. This is not reflected in the $8.00 admission price though.

Your tour begins as you are ushered into the lobby by one of the owners. You may have a difficult time understanding the 10 minute sales pitch as they explain each item in the gift shop through twitches constant sniffing gritted teeth and pinned pupils. Then you will be whisked down a single hall and shown 4 rooms and told all about what they intend to do someday and how poorly the previous owner maintained the building.

You'll enjoy witty commentary such as " I wish the light wasn't burned out cuz like this stuff on the wall is like kinda cool". And " the basement has like all kinds if rooms and stuff but it's like haunted so we like don't go down there."

It's building up to be a pretty awful ill informed badly designed tourist trap.

I am co-owner of the the Historic Dumas Brothel, and I reviewed our guest book and was unable to find your name or any details that indicate you visited the Dumas, so please contact me via email so I can send you a FULL refund immediately! My sincerest apologies for whomever it was that provided you with a tour... If you happen to know the person's name it will help me to make things better! We operate exclusively through volunteers who provide tours for us (free of charge) as a part of our restoration efforts and unfortunately we have had some negative experiences with a couple of them (one which we no longer utilize for volunteer work). Nonetheless, we do our best and always will. Thank you for the feedback so that I can personally resolve this for you!
