“away from the maddening crowds”
Reviewed 4 August 2008

We booked to stay here on fairly short notice in order to visit Yellowstone, and all the more mainstream places were full. The booking process was easy, their website helpful, and even though we arrived after they'd closed, they had left our cabin open for us, and a note at the gas station/ store. The kitchen which was an addtional fee to rent was very useful, as we had brought refrigerated items with us. The bathroom was clean and functional. The only very minor complaints might be that no shampoo/conditioner was provided, the towels and linens were more like the ones at a relative's house rather than in a motel, and the carpet could have used a bit sprucing.
The location was fairly quiet, and seems much more low key than the West Yellowstone entrance. This side of the park had less geothermal features, but also about 1000 times fewer people, and virtually none of the obese type who would drive all the way to Yellowstone and barely get out of their massive vans/SUVs, except to make the strenous walk to get ice cream.
This side of Yellowstone was beautiful, and had plenty of wildlife viewing.

The two attached cabins are on a street off Main Street, behind the Sinclair gas station and general store owned by Lisa Schulter, a great host. You can hear the people in the next cabin, but that's a minor complaint in a town where the streets are empty at 10 PM. We had two comfortable queen beds. The room is small, taken up mostly by the beds. The cabin was warm; when we were there (first week in September) the temperature dipped down into the forties and the heat worked just fine. (Cooke City is higher than parts of Yellowstone National Park, over 8,000 feet.) There was plenty of hot water both mornings, and the cabin was immaculate. We parked our car right outside the door. Lisa couldn't be there when we arrived so she left the key in the cabin with the door unlocked! It's a very safe town. The cabins are basic (there isn't a glass in the bathroom, the pillows are foam and the towels aren't great), but it cost $85 a night, the best value for the money we had during our entire time at Yellowstone. Lisa left us a note with recommendations for dinner, and she gave us a free Internet connection.

  • Liked — It was really clean.
  • Disliked — Could hear the voices from neighboring cabin.
