“A Fantastic Rafting Trip”

We were having a great time in Yellowstone when we thought it would be so much fun to go rafting in the rivers. It isn't allowed to raft in yellowstone, so we drove up to Gardiner and went rafting with Montana Whitewater. They gave us some good gear and we were in the water in no time. Reservation was pretty easy over the phone. Our raft guide, Dylan, was really funny and told us a lot about the places we rafted through. He was a fun leader and let us jump in the river a few times and play some awesome games on the raft.

I pre-booked a half day raft trip on the Yellowstone for 14 people and selected 3 small rafts instead of 1 large raft. I also asked how long the trip would be knowing the Yellowstone was running fast this spring. I was told 2-3 hours. When we arrived at the river I was told that there weren't enough guides to use 3 small rafts. And, the final trip was just over an hour long. I enjoyed our guide Sam but this outfit could improve their communications. I was not impressed.

Thank Daniel K

Thank you so much for the review. We really appreciate the feedback and strive to improve our operations based on the customer experience. It looks like we could have improved our communication about the small boats and the swift moving river we have in the early season and I truly apologize that the trip was not exactly what you had reserved and were expecting. We have ample guide staff, though when the river is running high small boats are more likely to get tossed around and or flipped….both of which diminish the rafting experience as well as it places rafters in danger. When running whitewater trips safety is paramount. On this day the river was running at a high flow of 22,000 cubic feet per second (picture 22,000 basketballs passing any one point every second).  When the river is running this high we run larger rafts for safety sake.  The larger boats are more stable and full rafts make for a better ride with bigger hits and splashes in the rapids. The Yellowstone River is a free flowing river and flows vary daily based on the temperature, snowpack and rainfall. We do our best to inform people when they book for a trip during high water that trip times vary based on how high the river is that day.  During normal water our half day trip is a three hour door to door experience with an  1 ½ to 1 ¾ of that on the water.  During high water this can decrease to two hours door to door with about an hour of that on the water...again this fluctuates daily with the river flow. We are glad that you enjoyed your guide, Sam and once again will endeavor to communicate better with folks in the future to ensure there are no expectation gaps.

“Such a blast!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 December 2013

We went on the Half Day Paradise whitewater trip with Montana Whitewater and had so much fun! There were six of us in our group and we were paired up with a mother and son for a total of 8 in our raft plus our guide, with ages ranging from 12-50. None of us had every whitewater rafted before, but the staff was great and super helpful with any questions we had. The experience was amazing and the area that we rafted in was beautiful, too. During the peaceful parts of the river, you could enjoy the scenery and watch bighorn sheep grazing above the riverbank. Then we would hit whitewater again and laugh our butts off. Such a great trip, and I can't wait to go back!

“Great Experience and Great Guides!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 September 2013

We had our first whitewater rafting experience with Montana Whitewater. Our guide was Theron. He was phenomenal. Very laid back and funny. We were in a group that included a family with children and he was very good with them, but they were a half day group and we had the full day, so our party of four had a very private and awesome experience for the rest of the day. I would highly recommend doing this. The children from the other group seemed to really enjoy themselves, as did all of the adults.

Unfortunately, we did not get any pictures of our experience, as the cameramen were participating in a rescue of a rafter (not affiliated with the tour company) spilled from her kayak. If I had to pick any downsides of the experience, it would be that - but obviously that was not under anyone's control whatsoever. We did bring some underwater film cameras that got some shots for us.

I am very warm-blooded, so I elected not to wear a wetsuit, and I was fine (our trip was late July). The others in our party opted for the wetsuits but took them off after lunch because they were very warm.

All in all, it was a very good experience for first time rafting, and we are looking forward to rafting again in the future.

The customer service at this company is very good, and everyone we worked with was friendly and accommodating. It seems to be a very close-knit group.

Theron is an awesome guide. He has good jokes. :-)

I highly recommend Montana Whitewater to anybody looking for a great experience, family or otherwise.

“Fun times in Gardiner”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 September 2013

Spent labor day week in Gardiner and participated in Horseback riding, ziplining, and rafting with the folks at Montana Whitewater. Hanna was an excellent guide for our trail ride and we had a leisurely ride through beautiful countryside. Jamie and Brett gave us a fun and safe adventure on the ziplines. Ryan was our raft guide and was a total blast to spend our rafting time with. Everyone there is totally professional but relaxed enough to make sure you have a great time.
