We spent several days at the Amber Bear Inn in Heron, Montana. We were catered to by owners Michael and Nancy who have built a beautiful home in a gorgeous location. We watched deer and elk grazing in the front yard while enjoying good meals in the dining room. The rooms, all with baths, were super clean and offer great views. Besides the deer and elk, the owners have a menagerie of their own including several horses and dogs, noisy peacocks, a flock of guinea fowl, a llama, and assorted goats. Michael and Nancy are committed to preserving the land and providing a place for both guests and wildlife.

We stayed for the night on our 34th anniversary with the seasonal special of Dinner, Room, and Breakfast. It is an exceptional value at $199. The hosts, Mike and Nancy, are very gracious and hospitable, the rack of lamb and rib eye were excellent, the room was very comfortable, and the breakfast selection is amazing. We saw elk, deer, geese, and their own critters. The bear was there but sneaky. We had a GREAT TIME. Everyone should try it.

The Amber Bear Inn is a beautiful lodge with wonderful ambience.

Mike and Nancy are homely and welcoming they really look after their guests. The dining was great but the best bit was the local wildlife, especially Reggie the bear!! who took great delight in trying to sit on our Harley.

We would thoroughly recommend the Amber Bear Inn and hope to visit again sometime.

My husband and I live in Heron and enjoy the good food, service and animal life at the Amber Bear Inn on a regular basis. We regularly send friends there to eat or stay overnight because of the friendliness and hospitality of the owners, Mike and Nancy Mastin. Dress code is from fun to fancy, depending on your mood or occasion. Reasonably priced gifts from local artists as well as photos, Tshirts and goodies are readily available in the gift shop. A small country store is also handy on the premises for any last minute items you may need. The middle aged, friendly owners mostly operate the restaurant themselves, so don't expect fast food, just GREAT food and a pleasant atmosphere in a laid back country ambience. Mike and Nancy ask that you call for reservations first to eliminate overcrowding and longer wait times in the great room. These friendly folk greet you at the door in aprons and sensible shoes, as well as a smile and a hearty welcome. While eating you may be treated to sightings of bear, moose, deer, elk or any of the local wildlife as well as critters from their petting zoo. I can't imagine anyone leaving there hungry or unhappy after experiencing this true montana experience. Locals or out of towners as well should take this trek off the beaten path to adventure and enjoyment. Dan and Doris Swihart, Heron, Mt.

Lovely setting in a private wildlife refuge. My first stay at a B & B, and this is so much more than I imagined. The owners, Mike & Nancy, endeavored to make our stay as comfortable as possible. Inside the inn is lovely--rustic and classy at the same time: light colored woods, stone work, and lots of natural light. I can go on and on. Not only is breakfast served but also lunch and fabulous dinners at reasonable prices. Serene, panoramc mountain views add to the enjoyment of our stay. Very clean guest room, plush and comfortable bed, gigantic bathroom with jetted tub and 2-headed shower. Will definitely be back.

My husband and I stayed at the Amber Bear Inn in September 2009 for two nights and had a delightful stay. The owners, Nancy and Mike, were very welcoming and hospitable. Nancy is also a great cook, and our breakfasts and dinner there were delicious! They also have a restaurant there, which was really convenient for us weary travelers - we didn't have to go out driving around searching for a place to eat dinner. Our room upstairs was beautifully decorated and very comfortable and quiet, except for the bears growling and stomping around out back! What a glorious site, to see bears in the wild, right behind the inn! The inn is really beautiful, very warm and inviting, and they also had lots of local art hanging on the walls. It was a really nice weekend, and we will definitely return.

On Christmas eve, we were looking for a special place to have Christmas dinner when we heard about the Amber Bear Inn from some friends. On a whim, my wife, teenage daughter, and I made reservations for that very night. We got there in the early afternoon and we were able to spend a relaxed time together in our room, visit the animals in the barn, and enjoy the great room. We then had a fabulous dinner with Montana sized portions. The room was excellent and had an awesome view of the mountains. The fireplace in the room adds that simple mellowness that makes doing nothing a soul filling pleasure. We hung around on Christmas day long enough to have breakfast and a late lunch, soaking in the restful atmosphere. The owners did a perfect job of being extremely gracious and ever ready to offer their assistance without being bothersome.
