“Incredible Place”
Reviewed 27 March 2014

This trip was to celebrate our 20th Anniversary. What a truly incredible place to stay. We are lucky enough to travel quite a lot, however this is the only place I have felt motivated enough to review. It was our first trip to the Maldives and choosing a resort was quite daunting. We wanted something smallish, personal, great food, luxuriously rustic & eco conscious - Gili is all these things and more. From the moment we were met at the airport (10:30pm at night) the service was extraordinary. Shoes come off on the boat transfer and that is the last time you will need them. The special touches (ice bucket of champagne & gourmet snacks laid out in our room on arrival was just one) continue throughout your stay. The island has all its villas over water so only the other facilities are actually on the land. They have designed it all so beautifully that the buildings seem to almost melt into the vegetation giving the sense that it is all really natural and untouched. We stayed in a Crusoe Villa that has only boat access. Apparently all the villas are the same, just jetty or boat access is the difference. We loved our little boat and the independence it gave us. The Villa was simply gorgeous. The bathroom is enormous and stunning. I sat in the bath the one evening with the windows pulled open watching a storm roll in and blanket us in cloud and rain, only to pass on and clear almost as quickly as it had come. Everything takes the environment into account. The toiletries, the drinking water, packaging, towel service. We did not turn on the TV during our stay, but the Bose speakers & iPod are a nice touch with music all the way through to the bathroom. Free in-villa Wi-fi was also appreciated. Also a big plus was the Nespresso machine in the villa. You see a lot of sea-life from the villa and we swam in both the private swimming area off the bathroom and around the villa. The food at Gili is a highlight. Their organic gardens are worth a visit & something to be proud of. Breakfast is the best we have ever had. We dined in-room, at By The Sea, in the Over Water Bar, had a sandbank picnic (highly recommend this!) and had a private beach dinner. Every meal was fantastic and the service is always 5*. This is one of the few holidays where we have not come home dying for fresh fruit, salad and veggies. They are in abundance and you can eat till you want to pop, but keep it healthy at the same time - perfection :-). The Meera Spa adds to your relaxation and my massage and facial were both highlights of our stay. We snorkelled on the house-reef and while the coral is not great, the fish life was abundant. We also snorkelled at the sandbank and there the coral was breathtaking. We also visited a couple of local islands and really enjoyed seeing the other side of life there. 5 nights was simply not enough - we could have stayed 2 weeks :-). This is not a destination to go if you are worried about cost. It is not cheap, although I suspect that it is similar to other 5* resorts in the Maldives. What you do get is a resort that is a little bit different & has that something extra that sets them apart, you get what you pay for. The management and staff is happy, knowledgeable, efficient, friendly and they seem to know your needs before you do. To Atheef, our Mr Friday, thank you! You made it special & we will think of you every time we see your painting on our wall. Your Mr Friday is central to making everything happen for you and WOW do they do their job well! The Maldives is simply stunningly beautiful & we could not recommend Gili Lankanfusi more highly. Hopefully we can go back for our 30th anniversary!

Dear Linda

My team has asked me to pass on their most sincere thanks for such a fantastic review written after your recent stay with us. Although we are in the very fortunate position to receive many such reviews, it is always great to receive them as it re-enforces all the hard work we put in to our guest experiences.

Coming on your 20th anniversary you obviously had such great expectations and we were pleased to read that we had matched them in every area. Those little touches, our Gili Dining experiences and Meera Spa are always high points of a guests stay and combine seamlessly with all the other facilities we have here.

Thank you so much for all your comments and we very much hope that you dont have to wait 10 years before visiting us again. Remember all Wedding anniversaries are also very important.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

Best regards

Steven

If you are looking for a paradise with great food and service, that's the place to go. However, if you are looking for that and something more, that's definitely the place to go!

We selected Gili Lankanfushi from all the wonderful reviews here, but there was always a question if they were authentic. I can assure, they are. The idyllic island is wonderfully preserved, the service is excellent and the food fantastic. The ecologically friendly measures taken by the resort are very extensive, from using glass bottles to supply water, that can be refilled, to supporting local communities, treating employees well and having extensive information to guests on how to help (hint: don't buy coral souvenirs!) and how to observe the animals. Even the boutique only has local product created with the environment in mind. The result is an exuberant fauna, which you can see all over from your deck, from multicoloured fishes to the baby sharks, stingrays, geckos and even turtles!

The food is amazing, creative, different every meal. You can always have simpler choices like pasta, pizza and even hamburgers, but if you are a foodie, you will be in heaven. Lots of different twists, spices, tastes. I recommend a visit to the Wine Celler for a special dinner. And don't miss the Lemongrass mojito! For breakfast, infinity choices of juices and fresh fruits, or champagne if that's your thing :)

We also attended yoga sessions, scuba diving, snorkelling trips. But the view from our room, staying there and just relaxing was also a favourite activity.

It's difficult to pick people to recognise when so many have been great, and all the behind the scenes you don't see but feel they are working their best. Like the guy working on the bicycles all they long - anytime we saw him, he was fixing something. Or Alif, adding the twist of humour to an flawless service. But special thanks to Aboo, your Mr Friday, for wonderfully taking care of us; to Dr Rajesh, for saving my holiday twice! and to Shifau, for always having something new for us to try and something nice to say.

Hope to come back soon!

Room Tip: We stayed at room 21 on Jetty 1, facing the ocean, listening to the birds and waves. On that side of...

Dear Sulamita
Please accept my greatest of thanks for the fantastic TA Review that you completed subsequent to your recent stay with us. Forgive my tardiness in responding but I was waiting for something from the Bar (details below :)
The team was very happy to read all your comments and have asked me to pass on their most sincere thanks.
Our Wine Cellar is a lovely place to either dine or taste a few of our 400 labels. In particular the Wine & Chocolate tasting is very popular.

Having previously visited the Maldives (staying at Cocoa Island and the Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru), we were torn between re-visiting one of these fantastic resorts/islands and trying somewhere new. However, we were absolutely delighted with our decision to book a week at Gili Lankanfushi and would highly recommend it to others.

Below are some of our highlights and lowlights, as well as our opinion as to how things ranked vs the other 2 resorts we have been to.

Highlights
Food
Better than Cocoa (more variety) and Landaa Giraavaru. Outstanding breakfasts with the most extensive range of juices, smoothies and teas I have ever seen. Fantastic range of fruit (I miss the mangosteens!), sushi and hot food (try the fluffy omelet!). Loved seeing the champagne on the buffet table although was always a little bleary eyed to do it justice :-)
Starters at By the Sea restaurant are up there with some of the best we have eaten in restaurants in London and evening buffets are extensive in terms of choice and variety of food.
Cocktails are delicious & a HUGE range. Loved the 'happy hour' cocktail evenings - drinking a Gili goes Spicy while watching the sun go down is a MUST!
The managers drinks/hosted evening was a lot of fun - thanks everyone!
Big thumbs up with the F&B team and the bar staff. We are big foodies and were in heaven at Gili!
It's also worth mentioning that we thought the drinks were really reasonably priced compared to LG/Cocoa (glass of wine $10-12 and cocktails $12-13)

Villa
We loved the eco element to the villa, with the bedroom being the only part that is air conditioned and the shower being outside etc. However, this might not be for everyone.
It was a little hot in our bathroom some nights when we were getting ready, but for the reduction in energy consumption we were more than happy to put up with it. They are also v thoughtful with lots of optional extras e.g. a make up fridge and lots of fans in the open spaces.
The villas are HUGE compared to what we have seen elsewhere and we loved going to the upstairs section to watch the fish from above.
Gili provides day rooms on the island should you arrive early/leave late, however it's not always possible to get one of these depending on how busy the hotel is with check in and check out those days. There is a shower room though if you need to stay by the pool for a few hours post check out.

Transfers
Excellent transfers to and from Male (20 mins in speedboat) and we arrived at Male with just the right amount of time before our flight meaning we could maximize our time at the resort. Being met by the manager and our Mr Friday when we arrived was a nice touch, and they were also there to wave us off when we left.

Facilities
For an island resort the gym is the best we have seen in terms of amount and quality of equipment. Ditto with the tennis court (choice of rackets and hundreds of balls).

Activities
Guided snorkel was excellent (my husband said his best ever) and the marine biologist talk was excellent.

The staff at Gili think of pretty much EVERYTHING, it really is a fantastic place to stay.

Slightly less of a highlight (note, not bad, just not as strong as we have seen elsewhere):
Snacks
A wonderful range of snacks were provided by the pool during the day e.g. blobs of home made ice cream, iced coffees etc. Little treats like this are such a wonderful surprise and it made us a little sad when we were lounging in our villa that we were missing out on them. We've stayed in a couple of resorts where snacks e.g. cookies etc were delivered to your villa in the afternoon and something like this would really have been the icing on top of the cake for us. (Appreciate we are maybe just a little greedy when it comes to food!)

House reef
The house reef is not bad, just not as good as other resorts e.g. Cocoa (Gili is on the edge of the lagoon so there is not the same amount of reef). That being said, we saw lots of fish from our villa and walking to/from the main island including rays, sharks etc. The water is shallow from some of the villas, but there are plenty of fish even in the shallow waters and it's deep enough to paddle around in. There is also info about when the high tides are in each room to help plan your swims/snorkels.

Location
It is possible to see other resorts/islands from Gili. This didn't really bother us, but if you are looking for somewhere more remote than LG was better in this sense. Some trip advisor comments mentioned the no of seaplanes overhead. This really didn't bother us and is part of the Maldives experience in our minds.

Packing tip:
No one wears shoes (other than trainers in the gym etc) so no need to pack any. Dress code is very relaxed too so no need to pack smart dresses etc for the evenings. If you do get a rainy day then the temp can drop, so worth throwing a light jumper in your case just incase.

Extra tip:
For some reason, the Maldives is the only place in the world where i get bitten by sandflies (happened in all 3 of the resorts I have stayed in). So just some tips incase anyone else gets the same...make sure you drown your feet in insect repellant at all times when on the sand and take anti histamines as soon as possible to get the bites to go down. I only started this on the second to last day and it made a huge difference. It's worth noting I think I was the only person on the island with this problem, so it's not something to worry about but just wanted to share incase others have this problem too.

Room Tip: We were in room 19 on pier 2 which had excellent views and lots of fish in the reef off our villa. P...

Good morning from yet another beautiful sunny Island in Maldives!

It was fantastic to read your very comprehensive TA review subsequent to your recent visit to Gili Lankanfushi and may we thank you so much for taking the time to do so.

It was very pleasing to read that you thoroughly enjoyed your stay with us and the F&B and Housekeeping teams were very happy to read that they had performed particularly well!

We have taken a very careful note of your mention of afternoon snacks and Craig, our F&B Manager is looking into this.

Compared to some islands in the Maldives, we do agree that our reef is not as colouful as others, but I was pleased to read that you still found the sea life to be of a good standard. Also our regular snorkelling take guests to some great places and is a short boat ride away. We are also, in coordination with our On Island Marine Biologist, creating or own coral re-generation programme and this will definitely have a positive affect on the island in the future.

We look forward to seeing you again at Gili Lankanfushi and in the meantime assure you of our very best of intentions at all times.

have a fantastic day ahead!

Warmest regards

Steven

This is a wonderful hotel. We were in the "basic" luxury villas that are over water (all villas here are over water and some are only accessed by boat). The staff have been well trained and are friendly (perhaps this is a little too much at times since it was impossible to have a meal without your Friday or some other member of staff coming to chat which wasn't always wanted but it's a nice problem to have! To be fair, our Friday, Ahmed, was lovely and very helpful). The staff seem to have that knack of knowing what you need before you even ask for it (someone's definitely been to "The Oriental" in Bangkok or learnt something about their staff training). Gili is everything you would expect from a 5* luxury hotel in the Maldives insofar as the water is azure blue, the sand is white and the reef fish are as beautiful and colorful as you'd hope. What makes it a bit different is its Eco credentials. Gili was part of the Six Senses stable and although it's owned by a different company, it has retained the same Eco-chic style and sensibilities that all the Six Senses hotels have.

My only complaint is that some of the prices are outrageous but I think this is common to many Maldives 5* hotels. Once you add on all the taxes, It's over $7 for a can of Coke, most wines are at least $100 a bottle and even a small (and not terribly good) creme brûlée is over $25. The food is, in almost all cases, very good. The breakfast is superb. I resented the buffets when they were all that was available (there is a Japanese fusion restaurant open but I can't eat the food as I'm allergic to much of it). They were very expensive (well over $100 a head) and people often don't want to eat tones of food in the evening (especially when they've had as much breakfast as I managed to scoff!). If you had a small portion: you felt ripped off but if you went to town and ate $100 worth: you felt like a python after swallowing a cow. It wouldn't put me off coming again but do budget for very expensive extras. The cocktails were amazing and sipping one of those whilst watching the sun go down is a favourite memory of mine.

Finally, I thought I might mention the marine and diving centre. I am a very experienced diver but I haven't dived for years. The staff were lovely and very reassuring. Thanks to Sam and Lina for providing such an excellent and professional service. The resident marine biologist was as well informed as you'd expect and gave an excellent, informative and, at times, really funny talk on the reef. I'd recommend that if you stay at Gili and are interested in the reef life.

Overall...a wonderful hotel island but do budget for some very expensive extras although that most probably applies nationwide.

May I wish a great afternoon from all at Gili Lankanfushi!

It was with pleasure that I was able to read out your TA review this morning at my Management Briefing. The team have asked me to pass on their thanks for the great and constructive comments. In particular Ahmad, Sam, Lina and Vidas were particularly pleased that you felt that they had stood out as performing exceptionally well.

It was also fantastic to see that you felt the hosts here were anticipating your every need. This is a very important part of our coaching process, but even more importantly, when we recruit new hosts, this factor is most seriously taken into consideration; attitude being as important actual skills.

We have taken careful note on the fact you felt we were expensive in some areas and although we did recently make adjustments on this subject, should similar comments be received, we will most certainly re-investigate.

Thank you once again for your comments and we very much hope that we will see you again on our Island

Best of regards

My wife and I have a (recent) yearly tradition of visiting Maldives. Having visited Baros (twice) and Four Seasons KH (once) in the past, we decided to give Gili Lankanfushi a try this time around. We were certainly not disappointed. I would say this resort with its no shoes policy, large and open layout villas, Mr./ Ms. Friday, cycles for every guest, and on-resort vegetable garden was the most unique of the ones we've been to. I've detailed what I thought was Great, Good, 'Perhaps not for everyone' at Gili Lankanfushi.

The Great

Every guest on the resort is assigned a Mr./ Ms. Friday. Whenever you need anything, you just press a button on the villa phone and it connects you directly to the Mr./ Ms. Friday. We were assigned a Ms. Friday (Olga) who was an absolute pleasure to deal with. Very attentive yet not imposing, she took really good care of us. She was there to welcome us to the resort, to see us off, make our restaurant reservations and on a very rainy day ferry us to our resort in a buggy. The rest of the staff, from the resort manager to the restaurant staff to the villa attendees, are all friendly and efficient too. (Hint: if you like the personal service touch, then Gili Lankanfushi does it better than Four Seasons KH/ Baros)

Transfer to/ from the airport was seamless. We were the only ones coming to the resort from airport and were at the resort 40mins after landing at the airport.

You get the feeling of the resort not being very crowded even though they were running at close to full capacity when we were there. Breakfast and Dinner time is probably when you see a lot of the other guests. For the rest of the time it’s fairly quiet.

Then there are the Crusoe Residences which are only accessible by boat. We didn’t stay in them but they looked really nice. For the high rollers/ big groups there is the Private Reserve which is again accessible only by boat and really huge.

Each room has 2 cycles and there are plenty of places around the island for you to park your bike. Honestly, the island is not that big that you need a cycle but I thought it was still a nice touch. There is also a pool table and a swimming pool should you want a break from being in the sea.

The Good

The resort spends a lot of effort on its F&B offerings. For example, they have an on-resort vegetable garden, and make their own jams which are served at breakfast. The vegetables are so fresh that you can taste the earth in them – they probably travelled a total of 100m from plant to my plate. Loved the jams they make too – apple vanilla was my personal favorite. The wife and I also went to a Mediterranean buffet dinner one night – it was done very nicely with a number of cooking stations serving up freshly made dishes. We ate at the Japanese restaurant one night – the sushi and job fish were definitely above average. That said, the ala-carte dining options at the main restaurant for breakfast/ dinner and ‘Over the Water’ for lunch are not extensive even if they’re adequate. While the resort scores very highly for effort on the dining experience, the end result while very good is not the best out there. (Hint: Four Seasons KH does dining a tad better)

One of my favourite activities in Maldives is to sit on the over-water porch/ balcony and scan the sea below for sealife – some reef fish to be seen there but didn’t spot any turtles and just two stingrays. On the flip side, they’re a number of unwelcome tiny crabs that crawl up on the over-water porch, and on the porch divans. So, best check those cushions before you park yourself on them! The seawater is clear blue as you’d expect in Maldives. You can see a number of black tip sharks near the ‘Over the Water’ bar/ restaurant. (Hint: In Baros you couldn’t eat your waffles without spotting a stingray)

‘Perhaps not for everyone’

The resort has a ‘No News No Shoes’ policy. They take your shoes on the boat and you’re expected to walk around barefoot while you’re at the resort. Some guests remain barefoot for the entire trip and some guests still wear flip flops.

The resort, probably due to its ecofriendly and energy saving policy, has minimal lighting and the whole place looks rather gloomy at night. It was close to pitch dark when we were trying to walk to the Japanese restaurant at night. But that’s a small niggle that I could live with.

The villa is probably the main reason for me going 4-stars instead of 5-stars on this review, and it comes down purely to personal preference. As you enter the villa, you enter the dining and living area which is completely open air. The living area houses the fridge, coffee machine, some utensils and just down from it is the over-water porch. On one side of the living area is your bedroom, and on the other side is a gigantic restroom with closets for your clothes. Outside the restroom is an open air over-water walkway that leads you to the shower area. The shower area is covered but without a door. During the day and when it’s not raining, this layout is nice, well lit and you smell the lovely ocean breeze. However, on one of the days we were there, it rained pretty heavily, and there were just buckets of water pouring into the living area. Needless to say you can’t use the upstairs area either when it’s raining. Similarly, at night you miss having easy access to your clothes and the restroom/ shower.

Closing thoughts

Overall I would say it was a very good trip to Gili Lankanfushi. While I wasn’t a big fan of the villa itself, the great staff (thanks again, Olga), good food and clear blue seas make it a beautiful and peaceful corner of the earth to relax in.

Room Tip: We were allocated a villa with a sunrise view. On hindsight, should have asked for a room with a su...

Hello there!

Many thanks indeed for completing your TA review after your recent stay with us. Reviews really do give us a great idea as to where we are performing very well and also, when we note a trend, help us to develop our product and services when it appears that guests are informing us that we need to do so.

It was fantastic to read that overall you enjoyed your stay at Gili Lankanfushi and Olga in particular was very pleased that you felt that she looked after you very well.

It was also good to read that you overall enjoyed our dining options and we have taken note that you felt that the offering was not extensive enough for you. You may be pleased to hear that last Monday, we revised our Main Restaurant A la carte menu and to date it has gone down very well with all our guests. We are also planning a couple of more initiatives over the course of the year and we are sure that this will only add to the guests dining experiences.

Thanks for your constructive comments on our Suite Villas which as you say are open to the normally sunny weather that we have in the Maldives. I will need to check why the blinds were not pulled down around this area as this would normally suffice in preventing the rain from coming in. Fortunately rain is a very infrequent part of our weather here, but we do normally plan for all actualities.

Many thanks once again for taking the time to let us know your thoughts on your stay with us. It is much appreciated.

Myself and the team very hope hope that you will visit us again and we look forward to that, should the occasion arise.

Warm regards

Steven

My husband and I had no doubts about Gili as the destination of choice for our 10 year wedding anniversary. Having travelled to the Maldives previously we knew we were in for something special. We stayed in late January and the weather was warm and sunny with a consistent breeze coming from the sunrise side of the island.

Gili is paradise. From the moment your feet land on the jetty you are greeted with warm smiles and an assurance that your stay will be nothing less than perfect. No need to worry about organising your day activities....just leave it to your Mr Friday, a personable and reliable service with full attention to meeting the needs of its guests. Thank you Abu for being a wonderful Mr Friday.

We stayed in villa 28 (sunrise side of the island). Beautifully appointed bedrooms and bathrooms with maximum use of deck space to soak in the sun and the exquisite lagoon. Housekeeping staff provide an exceptional daily service. Our gratitude to you for ensuring our comfort.

Food and cocktails were sublime. We are not regular buffet diners but oh how that changed while we were on Gili. The on-the-beach buffet breakfast and dinners were exceptional. So beautifully balanced, diverse and gastronomic. Many thanks to Shawaf from F&B for your great sense of humour, your attention to detail and for surprising us with our daily "prescription" tonic (a health and energy booster). And to Siyam we thank you for your radiant smile, a pleasure to see at breakfast daily.

Lunch in the overwater restaurant is incredibly relaxing. Large comfy booths, beautiful colour tones and spectacular views of the lagoon on the sunset side of the island. To Alif our gratitude to you for being so attentive during meal times and for delivering our daily sunset cocktail whilst captivating us with your amazing knowledge on marine life.

If you love a good drop of wine then please make use of the island's Sommelier. His suggestions always hit the mark!

Don't forgt to book your divine pamper session at the island day spa and soak in the invigorating yet soothing experience of yoga or Qi Gong by the lagoon. And for a wonderful night be sure to book the outdoor jungle cinema followed by a night sleeping under the stars in the comfort of your rooftop villa.

So, what are you waiting for? Leave your worries behind and let the island of Gili make your holiday an unforgettable one too.

Dear Ves
It was a great pleasure to see your comprehensive review subsequent to your stay at Gili Lankanfushi. Myself and the team read it with great pleasure.

Abu and the hosts that you specifically mentioned are always over the moon to see that they have been picked out as performing particularly well and have asked me to pass on their thanks to you.

Dining at Gili has nearly always been to the very highest of standards and it it also great that you have taken the time to pick this area as being of a particular highlight. The same can be said for our Meera Spa which is enjoying a fantastic reputation.

We look forward to seeing you back on our Island in the near future and in the meantime if myself or any member of my team can be of further help, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Withe the best of regards

Steven

The hotel has something magic.
It's an amazing location, beautiful and peaceful surrounding, so relaxing and confortable. The vilas are perfect, big and cozy.
We had great time, and the kids really enjoyed the hotel and all the activities offered like scubba diving, tubbing, water skiing, ....
The staff is very helpful and discret.
We're looking forward to going back!

Room Tip: All villas are big and beautiful, but I would recommend the ones you can use the bicycle

Dear Esther
It was wonderful to read your TA review after your visit to our Island and in particular to see that your children had a particularly great time.

When families come to Gili Lankanfushi, it is a priority of the whole team to ensure that the younger members of the party are well cared for and enjoy the experience, because in this way the adults can relax from their daily schedule and leave feeling rejuvenated and relaxed.

We very much hope to see you all back at Gili Lankanfushi and in the meantime assure you of our very best of intentions at all times.

With kind regards

Steven
