My wife and I both were very pleased with our tour. Our guide was knowledgable and friendly. There was enough to keep us very interested for the entire 90 minutes. It was well worth the price of admission.

Loved our tour of this beautiful 26-room house, built in the 1890s for one of Kalispell’s founding families. It remained in the family, as a private residence, until being donated to the city in the 1970s to be operated as a historic site open to the public. Although the grounds are considerably diminished and the stables and outbuildings long gone, the house remains as it was when it was constructed, and the furniture and fittings are original.

The Conrads were wealthy pioneers and could afford the best materials and craftsmanship. They also liked what, for their day, were state-of-the-art conveniences, like lighting that could operate on either electricity or gas. The kitchen includes an indoor barbecue, food grinder and dishwasher, as well as a tube and bell system the Conrads used to summon servants (they employed as many as 24 in the house’s heyday).

The family liked to entertain, and guests included Theodore Roosevelt, who shared Charles Conrad’s interest in preserving the endangered bison. After his death, Charles’s private bison herd went to help create the herd that lives on at the National Bison Range in St. Regis, about an hour and a half from Kalispell.

Tours of the house are given every hour (this is the only way to see the house) and are a great way to learn not only about the family but about the history of the area. Go if you have the chance.

If your interested in montana history this is the place. Mr Conrad had connections with the elite of the state but also helped the Indians sign a treaty that benifited the Indians. Artifacts are amazing. Must see in kalispel.

The park has so much to offer but we found time to visit here. It was worth the time but if I only had two days, I'd skip it and concentrate on the park.
