“Everything We Hoped For For Our 38th Anniversary”
Reviewed 9 June 2014

Elk Lake Lodge is a perfect place for anyone seeking a quiet oasis in a wilderness landscape. The setting is gorgeous, with great mountain views. Nearby walks are colored by multiple kinds of wildflowers. We found one we'd never seen before--a rare calypso orchid, or fairy slipper. The meadow the seven cabins encircle is filled with blue birds; elsewhere we saw trumpeter swans, tanagers, sandhill cranes, many other birds. Our cabin was comfortable and cozy. Craig and Lerrina were helpful and the food was terrific; they even let you split an entree, a good idea since they are ample. Rent a boat, head across the lake, and hike up to the top of Elk Mountain for a great 360 view.

Room Tip: Cabins 1-3 have a creek behind them, creating great gurgling sounds.

We are glad you had such a nature-filled stay. It helps that Elk Lake is so close to the Red Rock Lakes Bird Refuge, for sure. Thank you for your generous review.

Every time I stay at Elk Lake Resort, I just don't want to leave. I guide nature photography trips and one of my go to places is this resort. There are awesome photography opportunities right outside your cabin. Then there is Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge and the Centennial Valley as a whole just down the road. To the east is Yellowstone. What more could you ask for. Mountain vistas, grasslands, rivers, streams, lakes, marshes, aspen groves. One hundred species of birds on every trip. Moose, elk, pronghorn, fox, beaver, badgers and many other mammals. A nature photographers paradise.

If you are looking for an escape from modern life, a place where you can get back to the simple things and experience God's natural world there is not better place in the lower 48 in my opinion.

Lerrina and Craig and their family and friends are always warm and welcoming. And if you need assistance, say with a flat tire, they are more than willing to help you out.

Food is always awesome and the cabins are comfy.

Will be heading back soon. You should too.

Green Features: They are off the grid and very eco-friendly. Not much more I an say.

You kind of have to find this spot but it is worth it. Red Rock Lakes are full of birds. Rustic little place that is comfortable, decent food. We have been a few times over the years. Good place to fish or just put your feet up.

If you want to get away, really away, this is a fabulous escape. 30 miles from anything, and completely off the grid. Comfortable, very clean and private little cabins, right by gorgeous Elk Lake. Really tasty food pours out of Lerrina's kitchen. Craig is helpful and has the whole place in great shape.

The Centennial Valley is as beautiful as anywhere we've been in MT. What's exceptional here is that there are more square miles of mountains, Red Rock Wildlife Refuge and waterfowl ponds than there are people. We hiked and rode around the valley all day and saw one hunting party on horseback heading into the hills for elk and maybe two pickups on the road. Birding was an afterthought for this trip but when we go back we'll study up and bring a spotting scope. We saw duck numbers and variety that rivaled Pea Island Wildlife Refuge here in NC; SH Cranes, migrating kestrels, lots of hawks, bald eagles, copious warblers, sage grouse, etc. Amazing birding.

Hanna and Nathaniel, Craig and Lerrina's kids, are great and are new friends.

Know where you're going when you go, this place is way out there. It's just what we were looking for....

Green Features: Hey Eco tourers, they don't brag about it much but this place is completely off the grid. National Forest land, solar for electricity on sunny days, a generator when it's cloudy. Direct vent propane heaters and propane hot water in each cabin

My husband and I recently vacationed in Montana with my sister, her husband and our niece. With this being our first experience in this amazingly beautiful and majestic state our stay at Elk Lake Resort heightened our trip from the familiar Northeast to a place "off the grid". Having never stayed for any length of time at such a remote location we were in awe of the closeness of nature. The owners of the resort, the Collins could not have been more helpful. Highlights were their willingness to cook our catch of the day; a 6 hour hike with Lerrina to Lillian Lake; flying kites with their children; eating the delicious home cooked meals and simply feeling special throughout our stay. This would not be the best place to stay should you want to be close to Yellowstone or Bozeman however for an authentic, inside look at life in Lima, Montana and a great place for fishing without crowds, you might want to look into this destination.

Words are not enough. Craig and Lerrina Collins and their children and employees were impeccable at making my friends and me feel like family. They went completely out of their way to accomodate us. They held dinner for us when we were late and even brought lunch to us when we fished at hidden lake a few miles away. The cabin was clean and very comfortable as was all the accommodation. Did I say how good the food was? Craig even cooked up some of our fish for us! What more can I say-
We catched and released sooo many fish that we joked about how our arms were getting sore... We saw several bald eagles, badger, muskrat, otters, moose, elk, deer, etc. etc.
The bottom line is I can't wait to go back next year!
Thanks for the great vacation !

Our annual fishing trip to Elk Lake was once again a great success! Lerrina,Craig,Anna,Hanna,Nate and the rest of the staff go all out to make sure our stay with them is first class. The food is wonderful and the scenery is breathtaking. My only complaint is that I have to leave.
