Owner description: Located at one of Montana's first military posts, this museum houses rotating exhibits and devotes an entire wing to the 25th Infantry Bicycle Corps. A recreated Western town of the late 1800s takes visitors back in time to the days of carriage houses and homestead cabins.

There are several buildings on the property that make it appear like there's a lot more to see than there actually is. The main building houses some interesting exhibits, but most of them are reproductions or "representative" of what they are supposed to be depicting. After going through the main building we went outside to visit the numerous out buildings. It was a very hot day and after walking to 3 or 4 buildings only to discover you couldn't actually go inside, we opted to leave. Perhaps we missed the best parts?

This is a great museum in the making. It consists of the remnants of a fort used from the Civil War era through WWII, and a number of buildings and exhibits that have been moved to the museum land. Unfortunately, the signage in many of the buildings is just inadequate. Also, when you pay for the main military museum (only $3/adult), when you get to the next military museum they suggest another $3 "donation." The total is still reasonable, but I think they would be much better off just charging $6/adult and let that give you access to everything.

Well maintained and designed. While I didn't need handicapped access, I was impressed with the wheelchair accessibility of the museum property.

The museum is open most days and has displays and buildings of local history. The grounds are well kept and have a logging display, a fire watch tower, a Montana military museum, a single room school as well as other displays. Its worth your time.

The museum gave an interesting overview of Missoula's history in the time of the fort - mid 1800s to mid-1900s. It was used to house soldiers to 'protect' settlers and to house immigrant European men and to intern the Japanese during WW2. It also told a little of the history of the bicycle military black men who served from there for a short period. The video used to introduce you to the museum was well done, as are the displays. We really enjoyed walking through the grounds looking at the forestry display, the one-room school house and the church.
