We visit Bigfork for four months each year and Laughing Horse Lodge is our absolute favorite dining experience…and an experience is what it is. From the warm greeting of Nikki and Cooper (the two resident golden retrievers) to the delectable aromas that tease you upon entering the cozy dining room, to the uncensored and entertaining owner and chef, Kathleen.
To find San Francisco-style food, ie, organic ingredients crafted into simple yet memorable meals, in the backwoods of Montana is a surprise, but to find these wonderful meals served by an exceptional staff who obviously love their work, in a beautiful space punctuated by original art – and if the weather is good- dining in a spectacular garden…is beyond all expectation.
This past summer, Kathleen hosted a series of Chef and Wine Tasting Dinners that would have been well-received in New York or our home town. We went to all 6 and were never disappointed in a single dish, the most memorable being the tastes of Argentina (we had just returned from BA and what Kate’s kitchen delivered was equal to or superior to the dining we had in Argentina –Kate, please do this series again!.)
Our only regret is that we can’t transport this lovely gem back to the Bay area for the rest of the year.

We stopped here for a breakfast on our way to Bozeman. Snow had dusted the peaks and it was raining and chilly. You pass diner after diner and each one looks like the other. We were really hungry so decided this was it and no further. Wow!! what a lovely surprise, roaring fire, delectable smells wafting from the kitchen, a dog sprawled on the sofa, another greeting us, coffee wafting a welcome to our senses. We were greeted seated and treated. Ladies a brilliant job and I am still dreaming of my crispy bacon and the seed loaf and jam. I am a rather painful and fussy foodie and was dreading greasy fare but wow what a lovely breakfast. We never knew about the Laughing Horse Lodge, as we are from out of country and this little stopover became somewhat of a highlight for us. Exceptionally friendly, gorgeous cosy setting and really good food. Next time we will stay over to try dinner too.
