“Great spot for a picnic”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 January 2013

This little state park is not far from I-90 and is worth the detour. There are two trails you can take to view the bluff used by the Native Americans, we took the short one - about 1/4 of a mile up to a shelter with information about the buffalo jump and the people who used it. There are few facilities, but the cost per car for those not from Montana is only $5.

“Wide open and rustic, with room to roam”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 December 2012

There are two Montana state parks centered around buffalo jumps (First Peoples Buffalo Jump near Great Falls, and this park). They are both good. This one is more remote and far less developed. The only facilities are a small parking lot, a couple of picnic tables, an outhouse and a network of simple trails with minimal interpretive signage. Take the time to hike all the way up to the top of the jump itself, and imagine what it was like to be there when the native people drove herds of bison off the cliff. Views of the Madison Range are excellent.

There are few trees, so it can be extremely hot on summer afternoons. Spring and Fall are good times to visit.

To reach this park, you drive several miles on good gravel roads. It isn't far from the popular trout fishing areas on the Madison River.

A nice display with kiosks, maintained trails and quiet atmosphere. I loved descriptions of plants, Indian methods and animals.

THis is the place where native american hunted buffalos by making them jump off the cliff. Fantastic views and beautiful colors on the sunset. Good for picnicking!

“Beautiful area.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 September 2012

This state park protects an area that centuries ago was used by Native Americans to run Bison off the cliff. this was just their way of hunting bacjk then. The park is a bit out of the way, as you drive 7 miles on a gravel road to get there. But I guess that adds to the beauty of it. There are no staff members or visitor's center here. There are interesting interpretive signs and a mildly strenuous trail to the top of the jump. Great view from up there. Just beware of rattlesnakes.
