“Love this place!”
Reviewed 13 May 2014

I had read several reviews before reserving a room here so I knew they were finishing up a remodel to their lobby, pool, breakfast area. I was pleasantly surprised at the very small bit of inconvenience this caused. The location is extremely convenient, very close to the entrance to Yellowstone NP and to downtown. It is within walking distance to all restaurants in town. The outside of the facility looked new and attractive. The staff at the front desk were very friendly, helpful, knowledgable and accommodating. The entire facility was super clean. Our room was beautiful and comfortable. MIT appeared to have all new rustic "bear lodge" type furnishings and decorations. Very pleasant to be in! The bed was very comfortable. It had a nice sized flat screen TV and plenty of electric plugs although it would have been nice if more of them were at desk level. We stayed 3 nights and our room was always cleaned and restocked when we returned from our days adventures in the park. It was an overall great experience. I would definitely recommend this place and will definitely stay here again when we return. I understand the remodel in the lobby breakfast area will be complete in the next couple of weeks, making the breakfast experience even better.

Thanks for choosing to stay with us. Unfortunately you arrived just prior to the completion of the new breafast bar that our remodel was designed to create. We apologize for the temporary restrictive space we had to serve breakfast in during the project. Although we are not totally finished with furnishings, we started serving our expanded breakfast around our new 20 foot two sided breakfast serving counter last weekend. Based on the comments we are receiving our guests have really appreciated this latest improvement. We hope you will have the opportunity to return some day and enjoy the beautiful new space.

We stayed 5 nights and more or less everything was perfect, will stay there again next time. Very friendly staff, best rooms on our two week trip, good flatscreen tv, good wifi, very nice pool, clean rooms. Free breakfast was quite okay for Northern American standards ;). No extra charge for our child. During our stay the breakfast room was under construction which also blocked a little the access to the pool, but it didn't really bother us because it was obvious that they limited the impact as good as possible.
I love to see the staff being very motivated and enthusiastic but perhaps they could do their frequent gatherings and talks more private or at least less loud.
Just details but my other advice would be that after finishing the reconstruction, the management should pay attention to the details like flickering light tubes, door to the stairs which didn't close very well, poor functioning of the room access card system, universal clean remote not working well (and didn't have a screen aspect ratio button).

Room Tip: The quality of the new mattresses is very high as well as the quality of pillows. However they both...

Thank you for choosing to stay with us after traveling so far. We're glad to hear that the remodel project didn't cause you any major inconvenience during your extended stay. We apologize for the employee conversational noise. We are currently training new employees for the upcoming season in the middle of a construction project so we will need to make them aware to lower their voices and not attempt to compete with hammers and saws. Thanks for pointing out the other small details. We'll check your room lock and TV remote to insure the batteries are fresh and that everything is set up properly. We switched to the TV "Clean Remotes" because they are much easier to keep sanitary in a family environment and harder for guests to accidentally permanently change TV settings from the setting that were set to match our satellite service and TV capability.

We were on a very long road trip and decided to take a little side trip to Yellowstone. We didn't have any idea of where to stay. I ran across an ad for the Kelly Inn while reading about Yellowstone so we decided to give it a try.

When we arrived we were surprised to see the lobby was under construction...dust and tarps everywhere. However, the front desk clerk did a great job (under the circumstances) getting us checked into our room.

The room was clean, large, and comfortable. We were not at all inconvenienced during the construction of the new lobby and breakfast area.

We would stay again!

Room Tip: We stayed on the 2nd floor. There's an elevator so there's no problem getting your suitcase...

Thank you for choosing to stay with us during our remodel project. We're glad to hear that you were not inconvenienced by the construction in the lobby. Although it is slightly behind schedule, like most projects attempted in this wilderness area, we are hoping to have it completed very soon. We hope you will have a chance to visit us again when it is complete and enjoy the results of our efforts. Thanks for taking the time to share your experience.

Thank you for your kind comments and for choosing to stay with us despite the less than optimum conditions created by our remodel. We strongly believe that if a guest takes the time to share their experience with us and all of our potential future guests than we owe them the same courtesy to respond. Our goal is to not only respond to our former guests but to use their comments to attempt to make improvements when possible or share the facts that might prevent us from making suggested changes to meet a potential guest's expectations so that they have the opportunity to make an informed lodging choice when they visit Yellowstone for the first time. We recognize that we can't always be the best choice for everyone's needs all the time but we always strive to make sure that our guests are not dissappointed because they were missinformed. While we have had a few suggestions that our responses could be much shorter, most of our guests tell us that the reason they chose us was because of our TripAdvisor reviews and our responses. Thank you for recognizing our efforts and for recommending us to others.

First of all, the hotel is very nice for West Yellowstone. Very well kept and very good condition. They obviously take great care of the property. The staff was pretty nice; however, the lady who initially checked me in could have been more friendly. The other lady did come around and start to ask me how I was and such during check in so this made up for it; it seemed as tho the unfriendly lady was a bit new. I did feel very misled however. This would have been 5 stars if they would have been HONEST on their website. When you walk into the hotel its a mess, they are doing construction AND THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN NOTED somewhere! Also, one of the main reasons I got this hotel was for the hot continental breakfast. When I arrived down to breakfast a sign said food was limited because it was the slow season and because we received a discounted rate. Discounted rate really? Again, This should have been mentioned during the reservation or at least before we arrived. How was I to know the rates were discounted, if thats really the truth! Hot breakfast is very key when getting a hotel for me so this was quite a disappointment as there is little to eat in west yellowstone. Perhaps when the Kelly Inn wants to be honest I will give it 5 stars. I would gladly pay a higher rate for a nice clean hotel with breakfast.

Thank you for taking the time to submit a review of your stay during our construction project.. We're sorry to hear that we failed in our efforts to communicate our remodel project to every guest as we intended. We apologize for not contacting you directly but we can't find any reservation under the last name used for this review. If you will email the hotel with the date of the reservation and the name the room was reserved under we will be glad to review your reservation notes and get back with you with a potential resolution.

We can assure you that there was no attempt to misslead our guests or be dishonest in our descriptions of services but based on your comments we will add some changes to our web site to clarify that there may be slight compromises in services and amenities for maintenance periods in off seasons which is why rates are reduced.

To clarify for all potential guests:
Unfortunately from the time that most roads in Yellowstone Park close in mid March until they start reopening from late April until mid May there are many days without a single visitor in town. Most hotels, shops and resturants are closed for the off season and most don't reopen until mid May to Memorial day. The same thing occurs every year when the park closes in early November until mid December. We are one of the few hotels that remain open all year in order to keep our full time employees, train new ones and to do routine maintenance, deep cleaning and upgrades at the most opportune down times. This may require that the pool and hot tub be drained, cleaned and painted, new equipment installed, painting inside or out, parking lot maintenance, kitchen and common areas stripped and cleaned, every room stripped and cleaned and any planned improvements or upgrades made. We make every attempt to contact all incoming reservations for anything that will cause them an inconvenience but those who book through outside agencies should know that those agencies do not provide the hotels with contact information and will not assist the hotel in making contact with the guests so we must rely on signing inside the hotel to notify of upcoming or ongoing maintenance events.

Due to the lack of business in the off season and any possible reduced services, our rates are the lowest of the year which is about one third of our peak summer rates. Since our web site lists our rates for every week of the upcoming year our guests can choose to plan their Yellowstone trip balancing the lodging costs, the potential weather conditions, rstaurant openings, park road openings and available warm or cold season activities throughout the year. However, since we seldom have more than a couple of guests in house at a time in the off season and often have none, we simply can't prepare a hot breakfast during these times and cut back to our standard continental breakfast during these short periods. We now provide the full hot breakfast service to the rest of the over 15,000 room nights every year. Although we have been testing hot protein items for several years in the summer season, we just begain adding the full hot breakfast to our winter season last winter which is the first time we changed our web site information to mention anything other than an expanded continental breakfast with pancakes. Since the local Health Dept regulations only allow us to provide precooked heat and serve meat and egg items, we chose not to mention the hot protein additions until the new products we served had been thoroughly tested and accepted by our guests. It took two years of trial and error to arrive at products we were proud to serve and we continue to seek new additions and ways to serve them. That is the sole purpose of the remodel project that we have undertaken this off season.

As demands for greater breakfast selections have increased over the years we have had numerous requests from our guests to expand our breakfast serving and seating area to accomodate the growing crowds. We have struggled to find a way to repurpose the space available to resolve this issue and still meet all state and local codes. We were surprised and delighted when our latest proposal was approved and the permit signed in March. This has been a fast track project with only 6-8 weeks to get completed before we start filling with guests. During the course of the project we have had to restrict access to the pool area, the lobby area and the breakfast area at various short times to protect our guests and employees from paint fumes, drywall dust and other construction dangers. Electrical power has been rerouted or cut off from various areas for short periods which has restricted use of our hot breakfast equipment for the duration of the project. Although we have made every effort to notify every incoming guest of the project and give them an opportunity to make another lodging choice, there have been a few that have either not been home to receive the message or we didn't have the contact information to notify them.

We apologize if anyone felt misslead as to our services or amenities or was someohow not informed of the project in advance or at check in and given the opportunity to make another lodging choice with no cancellation charge. If anyone who stayed with us during this period was not informed and given that opportunity and would like to discuss any concerns please contact us directly and we will attempt to resolve them to their satisfaction.

After reading so many rave reviews we spent three nights here.

The beds are comfortable and the furniture is beautiful. The rooms were spacious with a wooden table and chairs. We loved the wooden animal sculptures around the building. The kids loved the bears peeking into the rooms.

The hotel is currently under construction. This was not mentioned anywhere on their website. I found out when I walked in and had to walk through an active construction site in order for a construction worker to direct me to an office with the door closed.

The employee told me someone was supposed to call us but they did not.

My children are severely asthmatic and it was a miserable stay. I would have changed my plans had I known. My mother did not want to switch hotels and they did not change our room despite my repeated complaints.

I was told that construction ended at 6pm but they were still working at 8pm.

The managers were on vacation and the employees did not seem to have any authority. They were very pleasant but nothing was done to remedy the situation. They placed towels at the doors but it didn't help.

The breakfast was also very misleading. The website advertised an "extended continental breakfast with protein" but when we arrived at 9am (breakfast supposedly went until 10) there was no coffee, no bread and one bagel. We had to go out for breakfast. (The running bear was a great breakfast spot and we went there every morning.)

There was a sign explaining that they didn't offer the extended breakfast in the off season. I would have appreciated knowing that ahead of time because I would have planned accordingly. The first morning was a nightmare.

To access the pool we had to go out through the snow and ice just to find out that the heater broke in the pool.

Laundry costs $2 for a wash and dry. The lower dryer on the first floor did not work.

I can see the potential in this hotel but I can't recommend it because their website was misleading and no action was taken despite my repeated requests. The employees told me to write a letter. I will, but that did not help is during our stay.

Please accept our apology for your inconvenience during our remodel. Unfortunately, Mid March through April, while Yellowstone Park is closed, is the only time when we have an opportunity to do any upgrade projects. We attempted to notify the few guests who were scheduled to arrive in April about our remodel project to allow them an opportunity to cancel or adjust their dates until after the middle of May when it should be completed. Apparently you did not receive the phone message or email that was attempted to be sent to the contact information listed on each reservation. It appears that the contractor made some unfortunate "in the field" construction decisons during our abscence that were not condoned by us which caused you a great deal of inconvenience. Upon our return this morning we were informed by our staff of those inconveniences that occured during your stay and of the few concerns that you had expressed to them during your stay. Unfortunately, since you chose a prepaid non cancellable reservation, they were unable to access your credit card information to offer to cancel and refund your reservation but suggested that you email us directly. That won't be necessary. Based on your situation we sent you a personal email apology this morning and refunded your credit card for the full amount of your stay. We understand that doesn't make a bad experience any better but we wouldn't feel right charging you if you felt that you did not have a choice to relocate to another facility during the remodel. We hope that you will have an opportunity to return some day to see the results of our new expanded breakfast service once this project is completed.
