Owner description: Whitefish Mountain Resort, in northwest Montana, is noted for its laid-back vibe, world-class skiing, and unbeatable value. The resort sees an average of 300 inches of snow on its 3,000 acres, and is as well known for a pleasant lack of lift lines as for its consistently good snow conditions. When the snow melts, Whitefish Mountain Resort becomes home to thrilling zip lines and an alpine slide, world-class downhill and cross-country mountain biking, and the unique Walk in the Treetops, in addition to spectacular hiking, water sports, fly fishing, whitewater rafting, Glacier National Park, and more available in the greater Whitefish area. It is the perfect base camp for a summer visit to Montana’s majestic Flathead Valley.

Whitefish Mountain is huge in the ways that matter -- trails, acreage, variety, steeps, views, inches of snow -- but feels like a local hill in the best sense of that term. Rarely crowded. Low key and friendly. Prices for everything (lift tickets, food, rentals) way below Colorado and Utah. Cute town of Whitefish has good restaurants and bars and a world class craft brew pub. Sometimes you get fog but there are strategies for dealing with that. Otherwise I have nothing but great things to say about this mountain.

Whitefish is big mountain skiing at a bargain. We were there on a spring break with our college aged son and crowds were minimal. Lift lines were non-existant. The trails have a good variety and are wide open allowing safety for skiers of all levels. They have several on mountain restaurants and all were reasonably priced. The bad is the resort can mist in a lot. We were on a good period with only one bad day but others said that was not common.

Skied Whitefish several times with family and solo early March 2014. What stood out to me is the nearly endless off-trail skiing possibilities. If you like tree skiing or glade skiing and finding "secret" powder stashes, this place is for you. Be cautious of the "tree wells". Google about tree wells to learn the dangers.

Lots of good, scenic groomed runs too, including some long, easier intermediate runs. Good fast lift system with quick access to skiing off all sides of the mountain. Awesome snow. Yes, the mountain can be foggy, but look on the bright side: it preserves the snow. Plenty of trees on mountain to keep your frame of reference in the fog.

Main weakness is the long traverse on Russ' Street to get back to chair 1. Could use lift just before the traverse, which I hear is in the plans.

We skiied four days in February 2014 and loved the place. Gorgeous views from all three faces of this large ski mountain. The snow was perfect, fresh smooth powder fell every day, and the runs were well groomed. No crowds - locals told us not to tell anybody about their secret place! Resort staff were all friendly and helpful. Nice restaurant on top, convenient to multiple lifts. Elevation only 6000+ feet so less altitude adjustment for us lowlanders than some resorts. The only drawback is that it tends to be foggy sometimes, so be sure you bring some good goggles. The resort helped us book a snowshoe hike in Glacier National Park and that was fun.
