“A lucky find!”
Reviewed 17 August 2014

I was not expecting to find such a restaurant at a empty-feeling ski resort in the middle of summer. The wine list was very well put together -- a lot of small producer wines that I happen to know and love, plus some new surprises. The somm was very helpful and friendly. The food was also very well-executed. I had an elk tenderloin that was beautifully prepared.

“Yummy food, farm to table and great gluten free options”
Reviewed 17 August 2014

Fresh food, reasonably priced and great service staff. The food was served hot and promptly. We had a group of 9 and no problems anywhere. Staff shared cool stuff to do in the area and discount possibilities

“Good food but the rest a fiasco!”
Reviewed 8 August 2014

Food was excellent but our dining experience did not measure up to their rave reviews. When making reservation for our party of six, the owner required a credit card number to hold the reservation, with a $25 per person surcharge if we cancelled within 24 hours. We arrived 10 minutes early as a courtesy but staff said he needed to check with the chef before he could seat us at that time. Really? Not very welcoming! We were seated at a corner table with sun shining directly in our eyes for first half of dinner. (No window coverings for direct sun) The staff's unprofessional solution was to bring us sunglasses. Some of our first course orders were forgotten, then duplicated after second course meals arrived (yes, we were charged for the duplicated items). Waiter became less and less attentive as the restaurant filled up. Upon completion of our entrees, we waited over 30 minutes for dessert orders to be served, then were told they were out of one of the items. After waiting another 30 minutes, we finally cancelled dessert and asked for our bill, which then had to be corrected because of the duplicate first course charges. Chefs can cook but very poor follow through. Not the caliber of service we expected for the high end restaurant they are trying to be.

We are grateful you found our food excellent. We are disappointed in our delivery of the entire meal, as it obviously affected your dining experience. Everything that is mentioned in this review is correct.

Regarding our reservation process, we do indeed require a credit card to reserve a table of six or more during busy times. We are a small restaurant that relies on reservations, and larger parties can have significant impact on any given night, especially should they cancel with less than 24 hours notice (barring emergency situations).

We do our best to keep all reservations spaced, so that we may provide the attention and proper service for each and every guest, which is why we wanted to make sure we could seat you 10 minutes early.

The challenge we face, particularly on busy nights, as a seasonal restaurant, is the ability to maintain the high level of quality, both food and service, that our guests have come to expect. In rare instances, mistakes can be made by staff members that ultimately impact a guest's experience.

This occasion is a perfect example of a succession of mistakes that are unacceptable with our operation, even though they are certainly understandable, given the nature of staff and the high expectations we hold them to.

In this instance, a simple mistake (such as misplacing two items on the first course, then serving it again on the second course, and not removing the extra items from the bill), followed by improper communication amongst staff members regarding dessert, leads to a disappointing experience for the guest.

We can only learn from these mistakes and move on, all the while valuing the importance of such feedback, and how quickly it can affect the perception and experience of the guest. We are essentially managing people's perceptions, based on their experience, allowing the food and wine to speak for itself. The mechanics of the operation are the staff, which is the functionality and execution of the system. We rely on a near perfect system, as mistakes ultimately lead to flaws in our mission and offerings. In the end, we realize perfection is pursued, but never attained..

“Amazing Food and Service!!!”
Reviewed 31 July 2014 via mobile

My husband and I went down to Whitefish the other week and we were looking for a place that didn't serve pub food. We found them in the hotel directory binder in our hotel and they were only a couple buildings over. We didn't have reservations so we waiting at the bar until they had a spot available. We ordered the salmon cakes which were delicious and the bartender was really nice and attentive. When we got seating the sommelier came over and introduced himself and explained the menu. We order the chef tasting 7 course menu. I don't know what to say other than it was one of the greatest meals we have ever eaten. They brought out each course and explained what it was and how it was prepared. I can't explain in words how amazing the meals were but I stopped drinking even my water after the first couple courses because I didn't want the delicious flavours in my mouth to go away.

When we were done the meal we walked over and said thanks to chef Andy. It was pretty cool that you could see the guy in all the articles in the lobby cooking in the kitchen.

Definitely a must do if you are in the area!!!!

“Fabulous experience! Make the trip to the Kandahar!”
Reviewed 31 July 2014

Excellent experience! I thought the second course was my favorite, until the third course came out. Then that was my favorite until the fourth, and so on and so on! Absolutely unique combinations! Order the tasting menu and surrender yourself to Chef Andy! You won't be disappointed! And don't forget to go with the wine pairings! cafe Kandahar is definitely a hidden gem!
