“Out of town lodge”
Reviewed 14 August 2013

We chose Kandahar Lodge as we liked the idea of the Kitchen Loft Suites and also thinking that being up the side of a mountain we would have views of mountains and the lake at Whitefish. We were very happy with our Suite but be warned there are no views! This lodge is a good distance out of town and up a mountain but it's in a dip which means no views.

Having said that - the lodge itself was very nice, the service friendly and helpful. We arrived too late to get anything to eat and the lady behind the bar in the snug kindly directed us to a couple of places that would still be serving at that time.

The Kitchen Loft Suite was adequate for the three of us - although they are pushing it slightly to get two very large beds in the loft space! Watch your head on the ceiling and your toes on the beds! Very comfortable though.

Downstairs there was a very nice seating and kitchen area. There was a slightly small bathroom with a sink area outside - which was very oddly placed right at the door of the suite - which meant if anyone opened the door while you were at the sink then you would be seen from the corridor!

As pointed out by several people - there is no elevator - so make sure you are fit enough to carry all your bags up the flights of stairs! We were on the third floor!

Breakfast was functional - although with a very small seating area - goodness knows how they manage when it's busy. We did not eat in their dinner restaurant but chose to try out restaurants in the town of Whitefish.

If - like us - you are aiming to go back and forward to Glacier National Park - do be warned that it's quite a distance!

Whitefish was a lovely town with all the amenities that you would expect and a real nice feel to it. A good base for the surrounding area.

Perfect place close enough to town but far enough away to enjoy the cozy charm that this lodge offers
Rooms and beds were very very comfortable , bathroom a little small but much in keeping with a rustic vintage lodge feel . You stay here because of the charm and quaint accommodations and personal attention
A great get away from the hustle and bustle of a tourist town to visit with the family on your vacation or just to sit and meet other travelers . There were families playing board games in the lobby that feels very much like being in your own living room , there were others in the Snug bar
I will recommend to others and hope to return

After a very long drive from Yellowstone to the Glacier area, we were excited to pull up to this beautiful lodge, and the lobby and overall atmosphere didn't disappoint when we walked inside. The desk man was very helpful and carried our bags upstairs because there isn't an elevator. Our room was cozy and beautifully decorated, and we were just a one flight of stairs away from the hot tub and sauna, which we visited immediately to soak our travel-worn bones.

The lobby was so beautiful that we decided to relax there instead of in our room. We were thoroughly enjoying the comfy furniture and a tasty pinot noir when a large group of tourists arrived, and we were suddenly completely engulfed by bodies and chatter. Apparently this sleepy little lodge has an excellent restaurant, and they book tour groups who come in on buses just for the dining. The diners completely took over the small bar and the lobby, and we ended up having to finish our wine and pizza in the breakfast area. As paying lodgers, we felt very poorly treated in favor of the transient diners. I saw a server offer complimentary champagne to some diners, but no one offered us any compensation for the inconvenience and discomfort we experienced.

Back in our room, we realized that although the décor looked cozy, with high beds, overstuffed chairs, and lots of pillows, our room wasn't very practical. It didn't have a table or a desk for our laptops, and much of the bathroom had been converted to a mini-kitchenette containing dishes and other items that took up space without adding functionality.

The overall décor and luxury of this place should have warranted a four or five star review, but the lack of consideration we experienced cannot be overlooked. I would not recommend this place to friends or stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for the first floor because there isn't an elevator.

We are very familiar with whitefish in the winter but not so much in the summer. Our trip in july was the first in some time. This property certainly has a great street appeal and is certainly clean. The rooms are small but well decorated. The room was a bit over-priced for the summer in whitefish given its remote location. The location is superior in the winter. While the beds were comfortable the curious thing is their elevation from the floor. A ladder would be helpful. This is not a place for elderly people. Our activities during our stay where centred on the hill. Were it otherwise a property in the valley would have been better suited. While the approach road is steep it's not an issue.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a larger window!

Great location on the hill at whitefish - ski back to the lodge across the car park to pick up the runs or grab a free courtesy shuttle in the mornings
Nice continental breakfast roaring fires - hot tub and a real rustic mountain lodge feel and a perfect snug bar add to the charm and oh the restaurant you must try as a treat

Only issue for us was our room was over the front of the lodge and the sound proofing was not great from the noise from reception areas and the snow clearing in the morning - but if they are clearing snow that's the reason we are there !
Friendly staff too - recommended

My wife and I were really looking forward to staying at Kandahar Lodge, although, on reflection, not that much because our first choice of hotel in Whitefish was The Lodge, which was full. But it seemed - from 4,000 miles away - to be an adequate substitute. Not so. The hotel is 5 miles up a mountain road which would be fine if there were any views from its windows; there are not - except for trees - because it is located in a dip. In our case, the panorama was of another accommodation block! The room itself was curious - with dim lights and a double bed so high, we had to stand on a settee to get into it. Honestly! The hotel looks what it is: a ski lodge in a ski village. At the beginning of July, the 'village' is a ghost town. The only place we could find open - of any kind, let alone in which to eat - was the Hell Roaring Restaurant (not as scary as it sounds) which does have a view - but down the valley not of Whitefish itself or its beautiful lake. The pub-like meal was OK. But it just as well that it was there because the much-vaunted Cafe Kandahar was closed on the night we arrived (July 3) AND on July 4! Can you believe that? To add to our dining woes, the bar meal service closed at 7pm on July 3 (we arrived at past 6 o'clock) and the bar was shut on the evening of July 4. We had dinner on July 4 at The Lodge at Whitefish - big party atmosphere and fireworks over the lake - and the whole experience was lovely but it only served to prove how much happier we would have been staying in this lovely lakeside hotel and not halfway up a lonely mountain in a deserted ski village. A disappointing start to our 5,000 mile road odyssey of the north west USA.

This is a beautiful place, near the top of the ski mountain in Whitefish. We were there in mid-summer, and did the zip line trail available at the ski area.

The lodge itself is very attractive, and our room was beautiful. Very comfortable bed. The restaurant is very high-end, but the food matched the price. The continental breakfast in the morning is quite reasonable.

Whitefish is a great town, and the lodge is about a 10-15 minute pleasant drive away.
