We stayed in the Luxury Chalet $255 per night. The lodge was in an amazing spot and we had a exellent view from our room! Clean rooms. We stayed for 3 nights and walked up to the hill lookout. Only real disappointment was the terriable bed we had in our room...definately not worth the price we paid. I even slept on the sofa bed without any blankets since neither my partner and I could sleep on the bed. I even told them the bed was 'worn out' and I wouldn't want to come back knowing I wasn't go to get any sleep again (they didn't seem that phased by this). So I won't be going back for this reason. (I even considered the floor!).

My wife and I stayed here one night while mountain biking the Queen Charlotte Track. Everything about the lodge was fantastic. Our greeting was friendly, the grounds are very entertaining, the view is gorgeous, and the food superb. Visit the parakeets, the chickens and pigs, learn about the trees, enjoy the art and the sculptures, take advantage of the entire experience. Use the kayaks, swim in the sound, lie in a hammock. It was gently raining much of our stay, but that didn't stop us from touring the grounds and visiting the glowworm grotto. It was the dinner that left the most enduring impression- fantastic. The room seemed a little small to us coming from the USA, but we quickly learned to appreciate the NZ concept of
small and simple is really beautiful. We can't wait to return.

Hi Thanks for the great feedback. We LOVE it when people go explore, regardless of the weather :) and we love hearing that people enjoyed themselves. Hopefully next time we can turn on the sun for you. Chef Jon says thanks for the feedback too.

We chose to stay here for 2 nights after our daughter made a day visit last year and recommended it. Unfortunately it rained the whole time we were there, so we couldn't do any of the walks or even enjoy the outside areas of the property ... but it was still very enjoyable and we gots lots of reading done!

The setting is stunning, looking across Lochmara Bay (so it didn't really matter that we were trapped indoors), and we booked the bathhouse for an hour one day and literally 'soaked up' the view from there.

We stayed in a 'top of the range room' with great views, which was large and tastefully decorated and very comfortable (QB, sofa & lounge chair and kitchenette - we took breakfast supplies across with us and had breakfast in our room and ate in the cafe for lunch & dinner). The cafe area was cosy with a fire going the whole time - and the meals were all tasty, substantial and well priced (despite some of the comments made by other guests about the meals being expensive).

The staff were all really friendly and helpful, especially John the chef, who was happy to chat about his love of good food (we got to know him quite well).

To save a nights accommodation (it was the most expensive we had in NZ), we'd suggest staying at the Harbour View Motel in Picton (great place) the night before and going across on the 9am boat (leaving your luggage at reception until your room is ready) and leaving Lochmara on the latest boat on your last day - that way you'll get a full day there at both ends of your stay, without staying an extra night!

We would stay there again (and hopefully get better weather next time) and would recommend it to others.

Room Tip: The most expensive rooms are the newest and have the best views - you get what you pay for!

Thanks for the great feedback. We do get day trippers and there are lots of areas to hang out so that is great advice for travellers. Hopefully next time we can get some sun for you - or get you out in kayaks so it doesn't matter if you get wet!!

We could only stay for 1 night as we were travelling between rugby games.

Good:

Location - stunning
Trip by boat
Feeding the parakeets
Pigs & chickens
"Outside" bath for just the two of us in the pouring rain
Restaurant / Bar service
Kayaking with my boys
Kicking the rugby ball and it going into the boat!

Improve:

Accommodation is more 3+ star than 5...nice and clean but not real luxury

Oustanding! Thanks! Even more outstanding was the RWC win, yee ha! Worth travelling home for eh? Thanks for the feedback - we've kept that rugby kicking game, but it's still not an easy goal. The first person to get it in was an Aussie, so nice to see some NZers keeping up our side too :). We've got a range of rooms across a range of levels, but we rate ourselves 3 1/2 stars overall. We're looking at getting a qualmark rating to make it official, but it's still on the to do list!

If you are looking for a standard 5 star hotel, try somewhere else. If you want natural beauty, quirky hotel and surrounds, friendly staff, and lots of potential activities, this is the place for you. We only had one night while doing the Queen Charlotte Track, I would definitely like to take the family back for longer.

This is the largest place we stayed of the three nights we hiked the Queen Charlotte Track. The rooms are just OK-- clean but not fancy. We were initially shown a room that was dark and partially below grade (or so it seemed), but when we requested an alternate, we got a much nicer one at no extra charge! Since the place originated as a backpackers lodge, we didn't expect swanky rooms anyway. We also didn't expect the incredible amenities that we did encounter. An unbelievably delicious gourmet dinner (with local wine) seated right on the bay, beautiful local artwork and sculpture, lush surroundings-- it was perfect. There was a sizable birthday party being celebrated by folks who'd just come over by ferry for the evening- evidence of the place's culinary reputation and scenic beauty. I would definitely go there again if there's an opportunity, and stay two nights to take advantage of the kayaking and wildlife recovery center attractions as well.

We went for a day visit to Lochmara Lodge on their private launch from Picton. The staff were very polite, helpful and welcoming. The gardens were beautiful and so too was the weather! The Lodge is not far from Picton and 45mins off the Queen Charlotte track. Yet you feel as though you are far away from things. After exploring the wonderful gardens, seeing the sculptures and the assortment of animals and visiting the lookout, you can come down and take part in feeding the native birds then settle down to a meal or coffee by the fire, or treat yourself to a spa or beauty treatment, and look at the art, perfect winter getaway! Highly recommended. Thank you for making a great day out for us!
