“Absolutely tranquil.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 May 2009

We stayed for just one night in a luxury chalet room. The name chalet is a little misleading though, as this is not a freestanding room, rather a room in a larger chalet with multiple rooms. Regardless, we were very happy with the room. It was very spacious and nicely decorated in neutral tones.

The bathroom was large and luxurious, and everything was very clean. We slept incredibly well although I'm sure that was as much about our tired bodies (having walked from Punga Cove) as it was about the serenity and coziness of our room!

Having a hot spa was a great way to rest our weary bones, and I must say pretty romantic with the view of the stars and the water!

The restaurant was fantastic. Nab a seat on the couches near the fireplace and have a quiet bevvie - bliss! The food was modern and fresh, and the service was friendly and helpful.

The grounds in general are beautiful and spacious, with breathtaking views upwards of towering trees, and downwards towards the stillness of the crystal clear water. We fed ducklings down on the jetty, and would've loved to sit on the deck and have a beer if it hadn't been so cold!

One warning though: the walk back up to the Queen Charlotte Track really seemed to drag on the next morning... Leave yourselves plenty of time as it's not nearly so pleasant as the walk down to the Lodge!

Arrived after kayaking from Picton. Staff were very friendly and went out of their way to make you feel comfortable. Our room was wonderful, went on lovely walks around the lodge, chilled out in the awesome hammocks. Food was great and happy hour was wonderful. Thank you for a great stay and help with the kayaks

We walked into Lochmara Lodge from the Queen Charlotte Track, which took about 45 minutes. It's well worth the walk in though. The place is really amazing set within a beautiful bay. It's really peaceful and although it's a reasonable sized lodge there are plenty of places to get away from it all. There are hammocks and benches all over the grounds were you can sit down to relax. The free kayaks are great fun so make use of them. Best time to go is in the morning when the water is calm and it's dead quiet. The highlight though had to be the food and service in the restaurant. We had three square meals in there every day during our stay and we were not disappointed. The standard of cooking was excellent coupled by good value for money. The ingredients were fresh and locally sourced. The staff were very helpful and friendly and they really understood the menu and wines etc. Our stay really was magical and if I had to point out anything bad about the place I honestly couldn't. Enjoy your stay.

We loved our stay at Lochmara Lodge - my husband was worried about three children and no television! but our kids were so busy. The older two kids(aged 8 and 5) went in the (free) kayaks out on the water all the time. The toddler loved paddling in the beach area. The staff at the restaurant were so considerate of feeding our children early- and the food was divine. They were worn out from the walks, hand feeding the birds, glow worms and art trails - love that ceramic couch! The spa was private with a great view and beautiful interior. Shane was so welcoming - he let our kids 'captain' the boat and Jess handled the duckling my 8 year old 'rescued' with great tact!
There was plenty of space so we didn't feel like our kids were too noisy and the sleeping areas were away from the restaurant and bar area which was good as many people come in by boat for dinner. We would definitely recommend this as an unusual way to take a break if you aren't use to stopping completely!

Lochmara Lodge is set in a very beautiful bay, which is accessible by water taxi. The restaurant food was superb and the staff was friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend staying in the family chalet, but NOT the Bayview Ensuite. The first night we stayed in the family chalet (#13) and the second night we moved to the Bayview Ensuite (#7), since the family chalet was not available both nights. The accommodations were completely different. The first room was one of the nicest places we stayed at—very large chalet with a beautiful deck overlooking the bay, nicely decorated with paintings by local artists. In stark contrast, the Bayview Ensuite was much smaller and dingier than a room at the Motel 6 and was poorly decorated. Even worse, the sewage system was located next to our Bayview Ensuite room and therefore the aroma was very strong when we opened the window. I would strongly advise against staying at the Bayview Ensuite--- it did not belong there and ruined the ambience of the place. However, I would recommend staying at the family chalet. While it was twice the price of the Bayview Ensuite, it was a much better value for your dollar –it had a spectacular view of the bay and more than four times the size of the Bayview Ensuite.

Stayed here over Christmas with our 2 children. Apartment was pretty basic with small kitchen area but no cooking facilities or lounge but this was made up for by the fabulous location. Lots of wildlife - birds, alpacas, dog, fish - free use of kayaks to paddle around in - and lots of places to explore and escape. Hot tub for private hire and massage available. Cafe/restaurant provided for all meals - although provided limited options for 3 of us who are vegetarian.

Lochmara Lodge was absolutely the highlight of our holiday – and we didn’t even stay there! (We would have, but they were full!). Instead we stayed in our boat, and over the course of a few days, we tied up to the visitors mooring and had breakfast, lunch and dinner at the Lochmara Cafe. Every single meal was divine – particularly the evening meal. The service was friendly and the atmosphere was great – everything was just top quality. We live in Wellington and often go to restaurants here in the city, and we would easily rate Lochmara Cafe up there with the best of them. Can’t wait to visit again! Loved the arts trail too!
