FOR

We booked Stoneridge based solely on its reviews which were all excellent and the outlook and intimate nature of this bed and breakfast will not disappoint any prospective customers. Although we didn't expect to see snow on the surrounding mountains, we were pleasantly surprised with the pretty outlook from this property which made the perfectly manicured gardens pop out against the white backgrounds, absolutely gorgeous. For those couples contemplating a wedding here, the chapel (we didn't use) is straight out of a fairytale and the pond outside would make a magnificent backdrop for newlyweds. We renewed our vows in a private ceremony in their gardens which was just right for what we wanted and nice with the celebrant that we engaged. Be aware that Stoneridge would normally charge for this privilege though.

We stayed in the cottage, it is quite small down stairs and although it has a minibar that comes complementary (we think) with the room, it has no sink to fill the kettle to make a coffee, this needs to be done from upstairs. The downstairs area however is very intimate with its gas fired fireplace and a large screen Samsung TV above the mantlepiece. There are surround sound speakers fed by a Denon amplifier however this is of an older generation and it does not have iPod nor USB interfaces which I found annoying given the room rate. The furniture is nice consisting of an old style soft leather 2.5 seat sofa and a single armchair. A nice touch was the fur throw that was also part of the sofa. The upstairs has a queen size bed that frankly lacks the five star touch that most resorts of this calibre supply, it was hard and well past its use by date in our opinion, the pillows lacked volume and should have been replaced some time ago. The linen was good and in itself comfortable. There was a small table with a couple of kitchen style chairs allowing the happy couple to have a snack or drink whole admiring the property and the distant mountains.

The ensuite bathroom was ok, but a bit quirky, it definitely had character but lacked the finishing touches that we would expect from a property that demands such a high nightly rate. The spa bath was good with its own radio but had been installed the wrong way so that you had to face into the bathroom rather than being comfortable facing the mountains.

AGAINST

We booked the dinner for our special occasion, we were told that it would be an intimate candle lit affair. We were bitterly disappointed that they only had a large 12 seat table at which they put us in one corner. There were no other couples staying at the time, but sitting at such a large table lacked the intimacy that we were seeking. The meal itself we elected to have so that we could have the total package, at $275 + GST + wine we expected something quite special. The menu was a Chefs choice, i.e the Chef makes the decision on what to feed you from an extensive menu. The proprietors were very good with chasing down just what we didn't eat so that particular foods could be excluded. The problem for us was that even though one person did not like seafood, this was still served which was disappointing. Further to this, there were some very unusual choices that the Chef chose to serve, that we couldn't consume or that only the most adventurous eater managed to eat. The cheese platter at the end of the night only had one variety of blue cheese which generally is an acquired taste at the best of times. The dessert was a mixture of raw pineapple and sticky date squares that was not on the menu and quite frankly a great fail. The best part of the whole meal was the lamb but as an overall rating on the meal and its impact on our special evening it was a dismal failure which left us empty. Our recommendation to prospective customers would be to steer clear of the Chefs Choice or ensure that the items that they were to have were predetermined.

The other inconsistency came through the lack of communication from the staff letting us know about what is chargeable. i.e was the wine chargeable or included in the meal price, it was also unclear what the procedure was with the minibar in the cottage as there were no details in their information brochure that it was complimentary or otherwise. We note that a couple of other people had also been confused with hidden charges and these need to be made transparent.

OVERALL

This is a very nice accommodation destination and frankly their reputation is well earned as a choice destination for marriage ceremonies, the accommodation is quirky but very nice, we hated the bed which in our opinion should be improved for a king size alternative and better quality mattress and pillows given the room rate.

Room Tip: Steer clear of the Chefs Choice menu unless you are more adventurous than we are.

Thank you for your input. We are glad you enjoyed your garden ceremony.

We are sorry that you were not completely satisfied with your stay in the Cottage. In light of your comments, we have now purchased all new feather cushions and have a cushion menu in every room. The bed has not been replaced as it is recently new and of top quality but appreciate it was not to your liking. We do have iPod and USB connections for the television in the cottage but it appears that they were not to be found adjacent the sound system. The Denon surround sound system is a superior system that produces very good quality sound.

Thank you for your opinion on the bath. We will take this into consideration when we renovate the cottage. The bathrooms are supplied with scented diffusers and come with shampoo, conditioner, moisturizer, bath and shower gel, and hand soap. Usually if guests require anything else, we would be more than happy to provide it.

It is unfortunate the reviewer did not understand the chef’s “choice” menu. We detail in correspondence when this menu is booked, that it is always in consideration of clients’ diets, food preferences, and allergies and does not include beverages. The reviewer was asked, given their disliking for shellfish, whether they would be happy with a salmon dish, to which they replied yes and ate the whole dish without complaint. They were offered a complimentary sixth course comprising of a cheese platter, and we are sorry that they did not enjoy this.

We work on a policy of 100% satisfaction. If this dissatisfaction was made known at the time of the meal, I would have been happy to have our chef continue to prepare courses until the customers were ultimately happy or alternatively I would not have charged for the meal.

The reviewer would be welcome to return for a complimentary dinner if they wish.

My Husband and I have jut been married at Stoneridge Estate. Planning our wedding from Australia we had never actually seen the venue, but when we did it absolutely took our breath away, to me Stoneridge Estate is the most beautiful place on Earth. All of the staff at Stoneridge were amazing, from helping me to plan the day to helping me to get into my wedding dress on the day, the support I had the whole time was above and beyond. Our photographer, florist, hair and makeup team, chauffeur and everyone involved exceeded our expectations. Diego was absolutely fantastic, making us and all of our guests feel so welcome. Everything on the day was perfect and I could not have wished for a better Wedding Day.

Planned our wedding from London. The venue were absolutely amazing, they thought of everything and really helped make our day special. The food was mouth watering, mind blowing and such a fantastic way to showcase NZ cuisine. The photos we were able to get around the location were like works of art. Highly recommended

Julian picked the perfect setting as The Lord of The Ring to propose! The grounds of Stoneridge Estate were picture perfect, warm , rustic and other wordly. We were there in Autumn so the colours of the leaves reflected symmetrically over crystal clear Lake Hayes set the scene for a super romantic long weekend. The breathtaking view ofcourse visible from all of our rooms and more importantly the indoor spa and outdoor hot tub! The gardens were simply stunning, French Lavender lightly intoxicating the air and the actual wine from the surrounding Vineyards were award worthy and consumed most of the weekend! Although we were in our own little world and on top of the world one of the best things about this place is actually the staff and owners Wayne and Suzanne such a friendly ,warm , attentive but relaxed style. These two made us feel super special and welcome. Diego also cooked us some great breakfasts and waited on us like he was our personal butler but as if he was an old time friend.
As we got engaged here we would definately like to have our wedding here as these guys just get it right and seem to know how its really done.
And yes the picnic basket organised by Wayne was the best we have ever had. The 'Hot Tub time machine' was fun too.
A magical place run by beautiful people.

Room Tip: The Private 2 storey villa is where its at!
