“Nice theme park resort, value for money, quiet during off peak, nice beach but not suitable for swimming”
Reviewed 18 April 2010

If you want to see the BIGGEST coconut in the world, you must head here.

Seriously, kids will enjoy the theme park, with it's kids slides and playground equipment. While the tube slide ride was enjoyed by my 8 year old son, and many other guest, I do find that it's design wasn't perfect and many a times you may get stuck on your way down.

There is another more conventional swimming pool adjacent to the gym. No signs of a spa though.

We checked in the hotel on the Thursday before Good Friday. Out of the over 300 rooms, we were told that there were only 15 rooms occupied for that night - as such, Thursday night seemed like an exclusive resort to me and my family with the beach deserted. The hotel was more busy over the weekend with about 150 rooms taken up, mostly by holidaying Singaporeans.

We stayed in a 2 bedroom apartment with a small kitchen, this had a sink, a small counter, a microwave oven and utensils/cutlery. Great for preparing simple sandwiches - with 2 active boys, this was a must.

The room was clean and simply furnished. Air conditioning via split unit aircons, so it could be as cold or warm as you wish.

The master bedroom kingsized bed, and the other bedroom's 2 single beds were clean, quiet and comfortable. The master bedroom's bathroom had a big bath tub for the relaxing couple...

The beach was beautiful, and great for walking during low tide with the kids catching and releasing hermit crabs. The check in desk advised that swimming on the beach wasn't advisable, while a security was more honest in his story of swimmers drowning around the Desaru area due to strong currents and undertow.

The hotel additionally provides sun beds along the beach, and by the cabana where drinks could be purchased.

Lots of care went into the carpet grass field between the hotel's restaurant building and the beach.

Meals were limited to a restaurant at the hotel - food selection during dinner and breakfast was limited. You will need to have a car to drive to other towns for more varied meals, which we did for a lunch (Good Luck restaurant at Sg Renggit, 30 minute drive), and a dinner (Kota Tinggi, 45 minute drive, as we were also going there for the firefly cruise)

The hotel also provides activities for the kids such as kite making, painting, leaf hunting ... - so take advantage of these free activities. There were also bicycles, jet skis, kayaks etc for hire.

Spacious with a great price! Up to 4 bedrooms suit available which is great for family. The water themepark is the best spot for kids. Clean bottled water provided daily with a mini kitchen & dinning table on top of the living area.

Could not sleep well with the hard pillows as I'm used to softer pillows but this is individual preference. There's no indication at the recep area (check in/check out counter) which is confusing and this is a big hotel with lots of guest checking in and out at the same time makes it worse.

However, the amenities are miserable. We stayed in the 3 bedroom type which accomodates up to 6 persons (a king size, a queen size & 2 single beds) but is only given 2 tiny bottles of shampoo & soap in each toilet. You have to pay for any additional requests - bath towel, hand towels, shampoo, soap all comes with extra charge. No toothpaste & toothbrush provided too. Not sure why the housekeeping does not include toilet and the floor tiles are giving way. We picked up 3 broken pieces during our 3D2N stay.

This hotel is definely the best in Desaru beach. The room is clean and newly renovated. Compare to other outdated hotels, it is a gem. My comment is positive except those Staffs are too green and not attentive. The Swimming pool in the water theme park really need some cleanup.

For the food, breakfast is good but common and there is no much choice. The dinner there is really good with a reasonable price. May be because the owner of the hotel is a restaurant owner mentioned in other review.

One more advice, Don't go to those seafood restaurant near the ferry pier. I read the review and go with my family, It cost me RM 198 but all things are not fresh and not tasty. It is really suck. The next day, I try the seafood restuarant in the hotel, It cost me RM 120 but it is much, much better.

It is all about expectations. Having been to the Pulai Desaru (expensive and 3* at most) and Desaru Golden Beach (run down, in need of demolition for a complete make-over), the Lotus Desaru is above the other two in expectations.

The rooms to be fair are very roomy. We stayed at the two bedroom apartment. The walk to the pool and the restaurant or beach can be far if you are a total potato couch. If potato couching is what you do best, don't come here.

It was raining for day we went with the monsoon going on. Everything is sloshed wet but we can't blame the weather for this time of the year. Considering all things. Its not too bad.

Staff at the restaurant were a little unresponsive due to the holiday surge. The resort if I'm not wrong was open for less than 3 months in this "soft launch".

If you consider the exorbitant prices and limited availability of a staycation in Singapore with even the budget NTUC Resorts - expensive for non-NTUC members - the price of around SGD140pn with breakfast for your entire family is hard to miss.

My kids found time playing in the sloshy wet grounds and the beach even though dark skies loomed overhead with the ever present drizzle. I think that is all that mattered for them.

Do note that Desaru isn't a place to go w/o personal transport. I would gladly give the firefly tour a miss if you have already been to one and especially if you have been to the one at Kuala Selangor near KL. The croc and ostrich farm are OK but the fruit farm is pretty much bang on the buck with a buffet lunch and huge samplings of fruit.

Lotus Desaru is still new and we were satisfied with our 2 day 1 nite holiday. We stayed in block Q which was a little far from the beach, pools & water parks ( 5-7 min walk). Request for blocks A to E/F if u want it nearer to the water park. We stayed in a 2-room apartment style place and it was pleasant and decent enough. The beach was lovely, huge waves & clean - we thoroughly enjoyed the beach. The pools were OK.. the water theme park was not too clean but the kids enjoyed themselves nevertheless. The slides were a little difficult to maneuvere with the inflatable rings - maybe it was not suitable for adults as the kids did not seem to bother so much. Breakfast had a good typical Malaysian hotel variety which left us full and satisfied. Beach also had jetski for RM90/20 mins ( expensive - but fun) and also banana boat rides available. Bicycle rides more for bigger children - no 3 wheelers available. Overall, we had a good stay and plan to go back again sometime soon.
One problem was the water heater was not working and we called service once but they never came to repair. we didn't stay in the room much so we had our showers both times in cold water and did not pursue the matter. Make sure you check ur's is working and fix it before you get back with the kids from the beach all cold !

Nice hotel even though newly refurbished. My family enjoyed our stay there and wished we could extend our stay for another few days. Apartmens were tastefully furnished. Poor service but what can you expect during the festive season....they were fully booked. Since just recently opened I suppose they are facing some teething problems as they lack professional manpower. Overall we loved our stay there. Value for money. The F & B Managers informed that more food outlets will be opened in 2010. We'll we can't wait for our next trip there.

Reviewed 20 January 2010

I was there on Christmas eve 2009. When i booked the room earlier, i was told by the reservations that the hotel was fully booked (Paid about RM130 extra for eve's surcharge). When we arrived at about 8pm, the lobby was deserted. The room that we were given was not bad but we were the only rm that is occupying the whole block of about 100 over of empty rooms. The phone was not working at all. That was not a good feeling at all. Using my mobile I called the hotel operator, insisting them to send someone over to check the phone lines while we were out for supper.

We went to the Teratai restaurant for their Christmas supper. Nothing "christmasy" about it. Imagined, we were served nasi lemak for Christmas supper, not even a shadow of 'gingerbread cookies". Had to pay about RM40 per adult n RM 20 per children. Had to share our supper with their hungry staff. All the senior uniformed staff were also enjoying the supper with us. Since the place was so empty, staff were all busy chatting among themselves loudly. Oh yes, we were the only family having that Christmas Supper.

We came back to room, and the phone was still dead. Using my mobile again, i insisted on changing my room to another block with people. As it was scary having the whole block to ourselves. We moved out to another room that very night.

The water theme park is lousy and old. Yishun swimming complex is 300 percent better.

You can only borrow towels from the swimming pool. The distance of the swimming pool and water themepark is about 200 meters. You must return the towel back to the swimming pool after usage even if you have to drag your little kids along. Their system is absurd.

Seriously, there is nothing to do there as the clubhouse has a restaurant, gym n a swimming pool. They don't even have a Massage place for relaxation.

The free breakfast was "so so" only... and we were served again with "nasi lemak" again. Since, it comes free with the room therefore i won't complain.

Food were all overpriced and not tasty at all.

Please bring boardgames or wii games. As nothing is free there.

Fire fly and other trips are all overpriced also. If you drive, you can go to these places easily as it is not that far from the hotel.

Maybe give them another 6 months or a year to buck up.

Good luck.
