We'd been told by friends that the Golden Spike Tower in North Platte, Nebraska was worth a detour to see. Boy are we glad that we took their advice. We're not rail fans, but we were overwhelmed by the size and complexity of the Union Pacific rail yards. The tower provides a sweeping overhead view and the volunteer guides provide a personal perspective on railroading that brings everything home. We heartily recommend a visit. Don't miss a chance to see it if you are in the area.
