My wife and I stayed here for two nites last week while visiting Death Valley.
Does PAPER THIN WALLS paint a picture?
The place was clean, the manager and staf very acommodating. stayed in the two story section, lower center. surrounded by out of town workers that got up about 4 A.M. to go to work.
The room on one side of us had a "working lady" that worked all nite, (several Customers)
We drove around town and think we could have done better.
There appears to be a new motel being built on the south end of town.
We were in Beatty about 14 years ago and this is the only city in the west we have seen that has not flourished.
I took pictures but did not include them as they make the place look better than it is.

Stayed here in mid-January of 2006. Rooms are clean, very spacious, with all necessities. Has a decent selection of cable stations.
Like so many places in and around Death Valley, this is 'no-frills' lodging. Don't look for a fitness center, jacuzzi, or shampoo and body lotions in the bathroom. If you want all the extras, go to Vegas. If you appreciate the quietness and serenity of DV, you will be happy here. All your basics are covered quite well here.
We paid less than $45 a night for a room with 2 double beds. There is a small casino with a 24 hour restaurant just down the road, and a few gas stations, so you can get whatever you need in town.
Free wireless internet service is provided.
I highly recommend visiting the ghost town of Rhyolite, just a few miles from Beatty. It's authentic, not a commercial venture. You don't need a truck, or 4WD to get there, it's paved road. You can take a gravel road to the old jail, and get some great pictures. Again, no problem driving there in a small car.

As the previous review said, if you are looking for some clean and cheap lodging in Beatty this is your place. I wanted a place just like this. I am hiking tomorrow in Death Valley and don't like camping so I wanted a hotel as close to the park as possible. I set up a reservation on the internet and the response from the manager was very polite and professional. I checked in with no problem and again the person who checked me in (one of the owners, I assume) was very nice. The place was more than a bargain at $35 a night and came with some extras like a refrigerator and wireless access. I assume the wireless access is from their unsecured personal network but what the heck it works. I am using it right now. Instead of cookie cutter hotels look for some adventure in your travel. If I am in Beatty again for the night I will stay here.

So we're the first to review the El Portal, eh? Well, it's a no-frills establishment, but for the price it's really not bad. It's one of those '50s or '60s kind of places where all the rooms are in one long, low building and you park your car directly in front of the door. The "lobby" is a tiny room that looks more like a ticket booth in a rundown Hollywood stage theater. Our room, however, was large and reasonably clean and comfortable. Like all of the accommodations in Beatty, the El Portal sits right on the main highway, but late night traffic is pretty light. As long as your wall fan unit works (so you can camouflage the moderate traffic noise) you should be okay.
