Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival

Attended "As You Like It" at outdoor San Harbor theatre. They have been holding Shakespeare Festival for over 40 years there and they seem to have the logistics down. We called to order tickets and I got advice from an extremely nice person on the phone. The volunteers who man the ticket area and help you find your seat are friendly and the seats are secured in the sand with walkway boards on top of main areas. I thought there would be a crowd at the food area and there really was not (wednesday night though) and we could easily have eaten there prior to show. We arrived much earlier than we needed to since we were concerned about traffic coming from Tahoe City. We enjoyed walking around the park area and watching the sunset on the lake in yet another gorgeous spot on Lake Tahoe. If I went again I would camp out in the little wine tasting "bar" where there are outdoor seats sort of overlooking the lake. They do tastings or sell by the glass. The performance was excellent. The Shakespeare comedy/farce options are not my favorite but all of the actors were great. There seems to be no bad seat in the house by the way...you can see and hear from anywhere. It does get cold the minute the sun goes down. We were glad we listened to advice and brought layers and blankets so we were comfortable. The wind picks up off the lake and makes it colder in the stands than other places but it is not a problem if you are prepared. We got desert during halftime and other folks enjoyed hot chocolate or coffee to warm up. Highly recommend this as a Tahoe family experience.

My wife's birthday falls in the middle of August. The last two years we've made attendance at this Festival part of her birthday celebration. The venue is unrivaled and the performances are outstanding. We've purchased upper and side gallery seating for $25/person and, though some distance from the stage, still have a good view and are able to hear the actors very well. The Festival is situated in the Sand Harbor State Park. Parking is free to Festival-goers if you arrive after 5pm. This past Saturday there was a line into the Festival when we arrived around 5:10pm. At 5:30pm those who do not have reserved seating are allowed to go in and "reserve" seats. We brought a picnic dinner and sat on the beach next door. We were in our seats at about 7:20 and the show started 10 minutes later. The day was in the mid-80s but this evening, as soon as the sun was down, the temps dropped quickly. Is wise to bring a sweater or jacket. This was a great night. Already looking forward to next year's production.

We sat in the Premier Seating section and it was great to be so close to the performers! What a beautiful, sand, beach setting outdoors. Simply breathtaking! Loved the performance of "As You Like It" – the characters are terrific and the Fool is hysterical! My only wish was that the food was not so expensive... As a tourist, we did not realize you could bring your own food/wine in this section which would have saved us some $$. That said, we'd definitely go again.

This year's production 'as you like it' was excellent as each year's play is. The twist they put on these plays and the setting at the lake make it a not to be missed event. We bring our own food and wine but usually have an intermission hot chocolate.

Amazing venue, great food, good theatre. Lines for bathrooms are long, they were out of soap. But, they were clean when I went. It was a fabulous experience. I can't wait to do it again.
