“Close to The Strip and Comfortable”
Reviewed 18 January 2014

If you are looking for an accommodation that is within walking distance to The Strip and is affordable, comfortable, clean and quiet with kitchen facilities, a community pool and hot tub, you may want to stay here. The staff is friendly and most accommodating and I would stay again and recommend the Desert Rose to other visitors.

I found this hotel on Trip Advisor and was so glad I did.
Our room was huge - fully fitted kitchen and separate dining area. Very comfortable L-shaped sofa in the lounge and great bedroom and bathroom.
We didn't use the pool.
The breakfast was a bit manic but it was nice to be able to take something back to your room and enjoy it there.
Just a short walk from Hooters and MGM Grand it was a great base for the trip and superb value for money.

I own at Shell Vacations Club (and Wyndham) and have always had a good experience, until I stayed at the Desert Rose. After the hard sell for the parking pass during which I had to get rude in order to finally decline the sales pitch, the first room we were given had a malfunctioning air conditioner (temps were in the 90's). So we got moved to a corner unit where the bedrooms faced the road. I am a medium to heavy sleeper, but the other couple had a light sleeper, so they had to move out after the first night due to the noisy road right out the window. This caused a rift between us for the rest of the vacation. I was mainly mortified that the resort did not live up to the Shell reputation or the photos. I am usually a master vacation planner and the other couple we went with was shocked that I could have been so far off the mark to pick this rathole.

The rooms were very shopworn, beat up walls, furniture and upholstery, ratty bedding, mattresses, and pillows as well as scratched up kitchenware. You could tell this used to be an apartment building because the rooms were small, but the bathrooms were the size of a postage stamp. Not only that, the sinks were pedestal, and as a result there was NOWHERE to put toiletries on the sink, only place was the back of the toilet, hoping nothing fell in the bowl. While my change or other money was never stolen like some reviews mentioned, I did not get any real cleaning other than a towel exchange once. The elevator is tiny, tiny, tiny and stunk. They allow smoking on the balconies, so you will smell it as soon as you step out. Also, the person below us had a mini bbq that caught on fire and had to be extinguished. That was exciting. Hallways are dimly lit and open to the air. I felt we had to park the car where we could look out the window and see it from the room, because I was genuinely scared it would be broken into while we were there.

The entrances are gated and they rope off the parking lot at night. I later discovered why: during the day there are literally "hoes on the stroll" on the sidewalks directly outside the resort. They restrict car traffic at night to going through the front entrance only, probably to prevent car theft. Once while getting in the car, AGAIN in BROAD DAYLIGHT what looked like a bum approached my husband and offered him a "watch for sale". I truly felt I was staying in "el barrio" after that, and I grew up in Chicago, so I am no wimp, I have seen my share of bad, unsafe neighborhoods. I couldn't wait to leave.

Never Ever Again. I paid $1700 in Maintenance fees to Shell to stay in this dump for a week. I was PISSED and so were my guests.

Thank you for the review. We are sorry to hear you were unsatisfied with the room and resort accommodations. Our goal is to make each guest feel at home by providing kitchen and laundry accommodations. Because we have condo-style resorts, certain hotel amenities such as daily housekeeping do not exist. We strive to provide this information to the guest through our website, pre-arrival letter and confirmation letter. We apologize for any confusion and will work to better communicate this through additional channels in the future. We also apologize for the noise you experience. We know it’s important to feel completely relaxed while on vacation. Please feel free to reach out to the manager during your stay if this occurs in the future so they can best accommodate. Our guests should feel safe and relaxed when staying at our properties. Please know we do have security officers on site for the protection of all our guests. We will be looking into your concerns specifically to provide follow up. We are sorry for your experience and greatly value your feedback.

First, must get the breakfast thing off my chest. We turned up to the breakfast room the first morning, kids still in PJs, to find nothing there except a sign telling us that there would no breakfast provided as of that day due to renovations. One of the managers (Tim?) apologised and gave us some vouchers for a local restaurant, but that only solved our problem for that morning. So that morning we had to jump on a bus (no car) to go buy some groceries and cart them back. Not happy, seeing as we had already paid for breakfast in the hotel price and that was one of our criteria for choosing that hotel. Would have been nice to have been notified beforehand so we could look elsewhere (apparently we weren't the only ones not notified).
So that took the shine off an otherwise nice stay. The room was well appointed and clean and it was always a relief to escape the chaos of the Strip at the end of the day. Our boys loved the pool, too, which was warm even when it was cold outside.

Hi Louise,

Thank you for taking the time to provide this feedback. We apologize for the issue you encountered regarding no breakfast being provided. We regret to inform you that we will be discontinuing the breakfast and welcome reception in January of 2014. Please keep in mind we do offer fully equipped kitchens in each guest unit for convenient cooking accommodations. We also recommend some wonderful nearby restaurants such as Coco’s, Einstein Bagels, or Denny’s. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and hope this does not discourage any future visits. We are happy to hear your kids enjoyed the pool and that your room was fully accommodating during your stay. Thank you for reaching out.

After checking up on the reviews before we left for Vegas, we were a little worried about some of the reviews that had been posted on here about the hotel. We have stayed in the Desert Rose Resort 4 times now so had an idea of our own what it was like.

Check-in was quick and efficient and went straight to our room. The room was clean and spacious enough for us, House keeping came everyday and also had a member of staff knock on our door to check if we had adequate house keeping (they are obviously checking this as there have been so many comments about the lack of it).

The pool was clean and heated, not many people in it which was nice and the hot-tub was relaxing. This did break but was fixed for the next day.

We had taken a walk down the road to get some provisions for the fridge/dinner and when coming to cook the food, we realised the kitchen was very POORLY equipped. We had limited amount of glasses (this resorted to my son drinking coke from a wine glass), no frying pan to fry our steaks and only a few pots. This was disappointing since our last few stays, this hadn't been a problem.

We were also looking forward to happy hour in the evenings as this is a good time to relax before dinner and a chance to meet the other guests staying in the hotel. Also, to say hello to Gus again...but this had been stopped...another disappointment.

Breakfast was nice. A mixture of sausages, bacon, eggs, cereal etc on offer. We took our breakfast back to the room as there wasn't anywhere to sit due to the volume of people. Best to get to breakfast early to avoid the queues.

On our last day, we woke up a little late and rushed to get dressed (including our autistic son) to get down for breakfast, only to find that they didn't have anything on that morning. We were again, disappointed with this as we were not informed about the closure. There was a sign out the day before to say 'pardon the dust, while we make improvements to your stay' (or something similar), nothing about there will be no breakfast tomorrow morning, We were at the supermarket the day before and could have picked up something then had we had known. This stressed my son out a little.

Apart from the above, we had an enjoyable stay but reading the recent comments about the happy hour and breakfast being discontinued, this removes one of the edges that Desert Rose has over other hotels and will make it much less likely that we will return for a 5th time. This is a shame really.

Room Tip: Get room on the top floor as you can hear people walking around

We stayed here for 2 nights in November and thought it was great. It was an easy walk to Caesar's Palace and the strip, and we enjoyed not having to walk through rows and rows of slot machines at our hotel. On-site parking (free) was convenient and close, and it was a short drive to/from the airport. Would definitely stay here again!

70 square meter apartment for the price of a room. The room was clean and the beds in the two bedrooms comfortable. If you want to be close to the Strip but avoid casino's, this is the place to be. The room was great even for a family of six, the pool was small but did it's job. There was laundry room which was good for us. We never tried the gym, it looked small but modern. This is close to the airport, but no noise bothered us. If you for some reason need TV, I think there were three of them.

The breakfast was fine for the price but the breakfast areas was way too small for the number of people. The cleaning was supposed to be done every other day or something, which was fine for us, but it seemed to happen more often. The cleaners took one of our towels (that looked too much like the hotel towels, but we managed to get it back, thanks to the good service at reception).
