Golden Nugget Hotel

Just returned from a long weekend ( for Kentucky derby) at golden nugget. Had a regular smoking room with two double beds. Room was in excellent shape and always kept clean by staff.

We used pool briefly. What an amazing pool! Shark/fish tank in center for you to watch while you swam around it. There is also an adult pool on the second deck where you have to reserve lounges and chairs if you are going to use that pool, but it was booked up for our entire stay. Did walk up and check it out. Would have been worth the $20 to book a lounge for the day.

The casino is quite large ( like most of them). I am a smoker and it did not seem overly smokey. Table games were lower in the am..like $5 black jack which was nice. Prices rise through the day but they do at most casinos.

All staff that we met were extremely pleasant and accommodating .

The " freemont street experience" is right outside the door. And it is an " experience". Really enjoyed it for one evening but then we were pretty much done with it. We are both in our mid 50's so that may have something to do with it. It is a wildly active areas that is quite a few blocks long. Many impersonators roaming around, ie, pee wee Herman, mr t, Michael Jackson, prince, kiss members . Fun to watch. Music ( live) playing in different parts of the street. Lazar show above the street was really spectacular.

All in all it was a great trip. We always stay on the strip when we come to Vegas so wanted to do something different. The GN hotel is a great place to stay and would recommend it, if you are wanting to stay in the freemont area.

Can't report on many restaurants. Only ate at cafe, which is similar to all hotel cafes. Breakfast, lunch and dinner served 24 hrs. Food was fine.

The sports book is pretty small so we ended up watching the derby in a bar right next to it. Can't remember the name of the bar but it has live music at night.

Cab trip back and forth to strip was about $50 including tip.

Would recommend this hotel if you want to party til the wee hours of the morning and hang out on freemont street. It's a perfect place for that.if, on the other hand , you would like a bit more sedate surroundings but are curious about the freemont street areas, I would suggest a hotel on the strip ( ie, bellagio, aria, venitian, palazzo ) and then take a cab to the freemont area, just to see how crazy it is. That would be our plan for the next trip. Have your cab drop you off at the golden nugget. Great place to start your journey of freemont. Then you can come back to nugget and easily get a cab back to your hotel. Enjoy!!!

Stayed at Golden Nugget Mother's Day weekend for 4 days and I must say that for the price of the room, I expected the customer service to match suit.

Pros:
+On Fremont Street Experience (which is like the Old Vegas strip but there is SO much to do and see there
+On bus route that goes to Vegas Strip (10 min ride generally and buses run a lot)
+Nice Room (the room was well put together)
+Early check in
+Friendly maid staff and bell hop

Cons:
-Gambling minimums are high during peak times (drop after 12 or 1 am thru about 9am)
-Need high per hand bets to get rated on table play
-Forgot to put in my table play
-Have to pay just to sit down at the pool ($10 for chair and $20 for Chaise generally)
-Expensive food options (no cheap food or late night options in the hotel itself).
-Long line to "check in" and rude front desk

What you should do?
-Golden Nugget is on 1 corner with "Fremont", "4 Queens", and "Binions" on the other 3 corners. For what you lose on not having as nice of a room will more than be made up by the tons of dinner and drink specials, cheap gambling minimums, and the Fremont Street Experience, by staying at one of the other 3.
-Show the Golden Nugget that they can't just live on their "brand name" alone. Maybe this is why they have lost money in the past and the past owners got out while the getting was good.

So in a nutshell, the Golden Nugget was physically a nice place to stay but the service and deals don't match up to the physical appeal. Try those other 3, pay $30 for a room you'll never be in, drink $1 margaritas, $2 coronas, or go to one the little stores on the "experience" and get 2 for $3 coors and bud lights or the bayou bar across from Mermaids and get a 48oz marg (hooked up) for $17 with $9 refills (it only took one)! LOL

Room Tip: See what I said above.

Note:
This hotel is on Fremont and Fremont street is not on the main Vegas strip! Therefore, if you would like to stay on the main strip or don't want to take a taxi to the strip, then the Golden Nugget is not the best choice.

Clean and Pretty
That being said, the Golden Nugget is a great hotel. We stayed in the Rush Tower with a king bedroom. The cost was 100 dollars per night and was very affordable for the high quality of the room. Updated design with leather couches, super comfy big bed, and modern shower.

I cant testify to the other room types; however, the lobby and pool were amazing. The casino was okay (seemed a little quiet).

Conclusion
If you are trying to experience Fremont, which is the older part of las vegas, I would def say go for the Golden Nugget. Fremont is a little bit slower than the main strip, and there are plenty of other hotels and little shops to entertain yourself. It seems to be a better spot for families because the street itself is closed off. If you are a first time visitor to Vegas and want to do it super big and get the full crazy hangover vegas experience--than you might want to stay on the strip or get a taxi/bus ride from the Golden Nugget. Either way the GN is a nice hotel to come back to and is cheaper bc its off the strip.

Room Tip: book ahead

This was our second time to Las Vegas. The last one we stayed on the strip for the whole trip. This vacation we decided on 2 nights on the strip, 2 nights on Freemont Street and had The Golden Nugget recommended to us last time we were there.

This hotel is BEAUTIFUL! Staff are very friendly, rooms are HUGE and EXTREMELY comfortable!! Excellent price per night also!

Our ONLY complaint... the pool area is WAY TOO SMALL for the size of hotel. The pool doesn't even open until 10 am, but people are out saving chairs at 7 am! We arrived at the pool at 9:00, and got the LAST TWO CHAIRS in the whole place!! Plus, the pool sits between all the towers, so you are constantly trying to avoid or chase the shade as the sun moves around the buildings. This would be great in July/August when it's a million degrees, but in May we had to chase the sun a lot. Nice area, great staff, just not large enough for the hotel size.

Freemont Street on the weekends cannot be beat! Check out Marriage Can Be Murder at Fitzgerald's!

We wanted to try a couple of nights at an iconic, old Vegas resort. The Golden Nugget was the first place to come to mind! The fact that it receives some glowing reviews, offered a bit of a discount price and is situated on Freemont Street sealed the deal.

For those who don't read all of the reviews, there's two, distinctly different, towers. The new "Rush Tower" appears to be getting most of the attention. We, however, were given a room in the original "Carson Tower". It's dated, but clean. The room was a good size with a comfortable bed and a nice, flat panel tv. Due to an unusually warm 1st week of May (at least, we won there!), we used the a/c. It worked very well. but, being an older unit, it was a little noisy. Very little external noise. Our room faced the Northwest and gave us a view of a parkade and the side of the old Plaza Hotel. If that's important to you, don't get that side.

Bathroom was ok. Standard fixtures. All dated, but in good working order. Lots of hot water.

No fridge or coffee maker. What's up with that...Vegas? You can get those in any "Motel 6", anywhere else in the world! (it needs to be said!)

Our wifi was free, but a little slow. I tend to be suspicious about many of the unexpected "fees". The Golden Nugget, for us, was better than a lot of area hotels, in that respect.

The pool was crowded but quite nice, regardless. Loved the Shark Tank adjacent to it. The waterslide, taking the rider through the tank, is a nice touch! Enjoyed a buffet lunch. Not a huge selection, but enough good stuff so as to walk away satisfied. Also, had a late dinner at the café. It was really quite good.

Freemont Street is a ball! The overhead, 5 city block video show is a must-see on any Vegas trip. Much more intimate experience than "the Strip". Excellent, top-notch entertainment provided - free - as you walk along the street. Lots of fun. Met some very nice, very interesting people.

The hotel was nice and we had a good time.

Room Tip: note! Each tower has a check-in!

We loved being on Fremont street and the light show was amazing, however the trip to the strip was a bit of a drag and if I was to go again I would prefer to stay on the strip. The swimming pool was awesome and the outdoor area was really nice and stylish.

After becoming tired of the prices in the hotels on the strip and the rising crime levels in them I decided to try downtown and the Golden Nugget.

I wish I had done this years ago.

The Golden Nugget is truly a 4-star property, my room was clean and spacious and there are plenty of things to do downtown within walking distance of the hotel.

I've already seen the mega resorts on the strip and they are ok to walk through but I can't justify paying for them.

Non-weekend rates at the Golden Nugget are a great bargain and as Captain Kirk says: "you get 4-star rooms at 2-star prices."

I ate breakfast in the hotel's buffet every morning and it was unremarkable but adequate.

One evening I had dinner at the hotel's steakhouse and it was indeed remarkable albeit rather pricy but I didn't travel that far to eat from a paper bag.

The casino is good and the odds are better than on the strip (see above: paying for the mega resorts) and the Deuce Bus is a nearby bargain if one still wants to visit the strip for dinner, a show or to see its glitz.

I'll likely rent a car next time as taxi fare one way from the airport is a full day's full-size rental.

I haven't heard of and didn't experience any of the scams or petty crime I've experienced on the strip and am reading about here more and more each week.

Overall the Golden Nugget is a great place and a great bargain if you can choose your dates.

I certainly recommend the Golden Nugget and I'll likely stay there henceforth.
