“Surprisingly Good!”
Reviewed 8 April 2013

Upon Arrival, I was very impressed with the lobby and the ease of checking in. Very courteous & helpful staff. I could not believe how easy it was to avoid the casino and get directly to the room elevators. This was a huge bonus for me.
Quiet rooms down long halls. (See Photo)
The room was very nicely appointed and furnished. I had a strip view room midway up (21st floor). It was worth the small upgrade cost.
Loved the food court.

we stayed & played at this 4 star casino & hotel last week. the wave pool & lazy river are heated & fun to wade or swim in. good choice of lounges either in sun or shade. casino has a lot of fun slot machines to choose from. Blue man group show is fantastic, with a lot of surprises during the show. they play very different instruments if you can acll them that. the room was large & well decorated, comfortable bed, large flat screen tv, & internet included in resort fee along with keurig coffe maker. plenty of places to choose from to eat.

Room Tip: just ask for a high room to get a great view of strip

The hotel is located in a great spot on the strip. It is old and it shows in the rooms.. dust and crappy showers are my biggest complaint. Oh and the view from our room on the third floor was of the air-conditioning units on the roof.. horrid and depressing. They should give a discount for those rooms. The food in the hotel is good and the casino is typical.. nothing special. The elevators are fantastic and the lobby and common areas are clean but smelly with air freshener stink. The concierge and check in staff are great.

Once the pride of Vegas, this hotel is highly under-rated. Before the Bellagio, Wynn, Venetian, etc this was the crown Jewel. It now has a wrap for being a "cheap" hotel. We'll it's inexpensive (by Vegas standards) but not a cheap dirty hotel. Always clean and great staff. It's not a monstrous hotel that you'll get lost in, but not tiny either. It is right-sized. Lots of action, reasonable table mins and just an overall great place to stay.

I highly recommend the Monte Carlo.

The Monte Carlo has an excellent location, friendly staff, adequate quality food and a pretty good pool (see reservations below). I might go back, but only if it's significantly cheaper than Mandalay Bay, which has a bigger pool with more sun.

The good: Location. Friendly staff. Location. Lazy river. Free craps lessons. Did I mention location.
The bad: Understaffed. No outside food at the pool. Loud music at the pool.

Room: Very good. Spacious. Shower head high enough (I'm 6'1"). Beds firm but pillows too firm and all the same. If you book a king, it's not guaranteed.

Pool:
* Layout: Excellent. Quite big, but Vegas hotels are huge so it still gets crowded.
* Sun: High rises all around. In early April, 1/3 the pool area doesn't get sun at any time throughout the day. Another 3rd doesn't get sun until 11:30. The volleyball court, which is sunny at 9:00 AM, is shaded by 2:30. But it was in the 80s (both the water and the air), so it was comfortable, even in the shade. In August, the shade might be the coveted location.
* Noise: Very loud pop music all day long. Not quite to the level where you can't talk to the person next to you, but close. We got used to it and didn't let it ruin our vacation, but if you're at all noise-sensitive, stay elsewhere.
* No outside food or drink at the pool: They force you to pay astronomical prices for not-so-astronomical quality food and drinks. The food wasn't terrible, but the selection was pretty poor. * Alcohol: The drinks were also horribly weak. There is 2 oz of alcohol in a 27 oz yard ($18) and 3 oz in a 36 oz mug ($27), basically $9/oz. You can add shots for $3/oz though, and bartenders are responsive to tips (of course), so just be prepared to pay. If you buy the 100 oz yard ($48) you get 15 oz of alcohol, so buy that, add a few shots and split it with friends. Poor selection of domestic beers + corona at the pool, despite having 300 beers at The Pub inside.

Service: Despite the Monte Carlo's current "V.I.P." ad campaign, the service here made me feel anything but important. Everyone was very friendly, and my complaints are probably due to under-staffing.
* When I first arrived, I waited in line almost 20 minutes to check in.
* We ordered a king, but they put us in a double-queen with the promise of moving the next night. They never called us to switch rooms, even after we called the front desk to check on the status.
* I had a very hard time tracking down a waitress to order lunch at the pool on Thursday. Friday and Saturday seemed adequately staffed.
* Breakfast at The Cafe took a while to come out (and we were in a hurry to get a good spot at the pool).

Casino: Wonderfully fun free craps lessons from Sean, a very nice pit boss. Craps is now my favorite game. He lets you play for a $5 minimum ($10 for everyone else) all day of you take the lesson. But that's the going rate at the Luxor (and probably elsewhere), so it's not that generous.

Food: Surprisingly excellent sliders at The Pub and the pool. Thick patty of not overcooked beef and nice sauce with onions. The Cafe and other pool food average. I didn't eat anywhere else at the Monte Carlo. The pool and Pub were overpriced ($12 breakfast sandwich, $9 yogurt parfait, $15 bacon & eggs).

Location: Prefect. Tram to the Bellagio (center of the world a few hotels north). Easy walk to the MGM Grand and Mandalay Bay (south end of the strip). Location alone might bring me back to the Monte Carlo.
