Felt very at home in a stately setting

Review of Rossington Hall
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 7 Aug 2021
Having missed out on our regular cruises over the past year and a bit, I was looking for some land-based luxury so decided to book a one night break (and tasting menu meal) at Rossington Hall. I am SO glad I did. Just one night at this delightful Victorian stately home left my husband and I feeling relaxed and refreshed (and very well fed!).

The building itself is truly beautiful, lots of pretty period features to admire and well appointed public rooms to explore and experience. The conservatory is particularly pleasant, light and airy, you may even spot one of the resident peacocks as you tuck into your breakfast. You can also take Afternoon Tea in the drawing room or relax over Sunday lunch in the Library.

We stayed in the Salvyn suite which my husband absolutely didn't want to leave. The room is super spacious with a high ceiling and a picturesque view out of the huge sash windows (complete with comfy window seats) which look out on to the grounds. The bed was also huge and so comfortable. I normally struggle to settle in strange beds but there was no issue here. The suite had a separate dressing room with an impressive amount of storage space and a beautiful full length mirror to admire yourself in, be you sporting your gladrags before going down to dinner or snuggled up in the complimentary robe and slippers.

The room had almost everything you might want or need during your stay (though a mini fridge might have been a nice touch) - from toiletries and a big screen TV to bottles of orange juice and a Nespresso machine. The bathroom is also well appointed with a deep bath and separate shower - both of which have plenty of room for two. Both the room and the rest of the hotel, though perhaps a little quirky in its decor (watch out for the suits of armour and haunted house-esque portraits), were clean and well attended to.

The evening meal was very impressive and as good as any tasting menu we've experienced before. Extremely well constructed, presented and prepared at every turn. We opted not to peek at the (ribbon wrapped scroll) menu before hand so each course was a complete surprise as well as a treat for the senses. We sampled some beautiful dishes - lobster, duck, scallops, pork, salmon - as well as 'in between' course of a tiny pipette of whisky (which normally retails at over £180!) to prepare the palate for the following dish - such fun!

The smaller tasting menu sized dishes certainly didn't mean we went to bed hungry - far from it! Service was quick but our meal still took a couple of (extremely pleasant) hours. We were well attended by the lovely waiter as well as being afforded the privacy and intimacy we were looking for.

The staff were all friendly, helpful and proficient, and we felt very relaxed and at home during our stay. Breakfast the following morning was also a delight - cooked to perfection with some real flair, both in the ingredients and presentation. Again, you definitely won't start your day off hungry.

Overall an absolutely wonderful stay at a truly impressive venue. Well priced and well delivered. Treat yourself!

If your thinking of booking a night at Rossington hall then do it, do it, definately do it and see for yourself, I won’t bore you with what made our stay so special as most , if not all , of the previous reviews have said it all , That should give a hint as to how great a stay you will have , I could not faulter anything other than a slow reception of Internet in our room , but that was not what our visit was about so it didn’t matter , we have stayed at numerous hotels , stately homes etc and this is far the best for an all round service from the location , staff , cleanliness , attention , generosity from all who were on duty during our stay and the genuine concern for our elderly parents wellbeing , we’ve stayed before and will stay again and again ,

We recently stayed here for a night as we needed to stay in the area on a last minute booking. The building is really quite beautiful but the grounds around it, in particular the drive up to the car park & entrance, need a lot of work. There is obviously work being done to the building and grounds continuously but driving passed stacks of breeze blocks and trying to avoid all the pot holes on the way in is not a good lead up to the building. A lot of work needs to be done to the grounds and driveway to bring it up to scratch to match the building.

The staff were extremely welcoming and friendly and the atmosphere is very informal, which doesn't seem to match the grandeur of the building and internal decor.

We stayed in the Blue Room which is lovely and quite well appointed, with a huge luxury bathroom. The bed was lovely & comfortable. It was extremely hot when we stayed but luckily a fan was provided in the room as otherwise it would have been unbearably warm given there is no air con.

We found it strange that there was no phone in the room to call down to reception, nor an information booklet about the hotel facilities other than a badly written history of the building. This meant if you needed anything you had to go down to reception yourself. Not so bad when you just need a wifi code but when we later discovered that 2 of our 4 towels had (what we assume to be) rust stains on them it was slightly too late to bother asking for clean ones as we were both showering!

We ate at the restaurant that evening for a tasting menu dinner. When seeing the menu we were impressed with the dish headings, but unfortunately reality didn't hit the mark. It was very much a case of trying too hard to create fine dining but missing some of the basics; some very strange combinations (asparagus, beetroot, ginger and raw carrot all on one plate), some food overcooked (asparagus and the duck), some lacking basic seasoning and a mushroom veloute, which although was very tasty, was almost solid so not a veloute!

The drinks and wine menus are also both fairly basic, with not many options, and the straws made the drinks taste very weird. The decor and furniture in the bar area are all very tired looking and no cushions were offered for the outdoor metal/mesh/rusting & slightly uncomfortable furniture.

Breakfast the next morning was quite good, the portion sizes are really big - too much for me - but all cooked fairly well. We were disappointed that both the orange & apple juices were from concentrate - huge pet hate of ours when paying £150-200+ for a night.

All-in-all, we would say that 3 stars is a fair assessment at the moment but with some minor, but fundamental, impovements it could be much more. Unfortunately, we wouldn't rush back as we think it is currently overpriced for what you get.

Lovely old stately home, large clean bedrooms. Fantastic service from the great friendly staff. Nothing was too much trouble for any of them. Stayed there for Doncaster races but would gladly stay there just for a relaxing break. Definitely will be staying here again.

Fantastic hotel and great staff. Lovely large bedrooms with a great views of the garden. Local resident peacock family are a delight to see walking around the gardens. Breakfast is served well and really good. Staff are super friendly and welcoming. Specially Debbie who makes you feel like home. Would strongly recommend anyone to go and make sure you also visit the Yorkshire Wildlife park.
