Owner description: Fleischmann Planetarium and Science Center (FPSC), originally built as a public research facility of the Desert Research Institute, has attracted nearly two million visitors since its opening in 1963. The uniquely shaped building, listed on the national register of historic places, was constructed around large panels of an early large-scale solar energy system designed by forward-thinking Reno architect Ray Hellman. Those initial ideas of renewable energy and sustainability have been revived through new solar electric and wind turbine installations on site, as well as updating the original components. FPSC has inspired countless students through field trips, and engaged the public through decades of planetarium programming, free observatory facilities, and exhibits.FPSC is Northern Nevada’s only venue specializing in space, astronomy, and related fields. The building contains three basic components: a newly-renovated 60-seat Star Theater housing a digital planetarium and large-format film system, a 3000 sq. ft. Exhibit Hall with both permanent and changing exhibits, and an extensive Science Store, as well as a classroom and fabrication areas. FPSC serves the university, from undergraduate to graduate students and faculty as a technological resource, and it serves the larger community as a public science education nexus. FPSC attracts a high number of visitors to the university campus: up to 15,000 K-12 students per year through field trip programs, 20,000 residents from Northern Nevada, and 20,000 out-of-state tourists.

Great experience! I encourage families to enjoy with the planetarium has to offer. My husband and I went and it was much more enjoyable than the casinos down the street. The price is very low, the facilities small but clean with lots to look at. The show itself was enjoyable and quite educational. We also wandered through the hands on exhibits which were great!

We had a little problem finding the planetarium and parking ended up being free...just let the cashier inside know you parked to verify if you need a pass. The parking for the planetarium is clearly labeled inside the parking structure.

“Awesome Experience!”

Been taking my son, age 8, to shows at this planetarium for 6 years now. They always have something amazing for families and for the budding astronomers in all of us!

“If your interested in the solar system, then this is for you. Pretty cool”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 November 2013

There's a little store and an exhibit you can walk through, its kind of cool and the staff was very nice and knowledgeable... But I had a 4yr old and 6yr old, they liked it for a moment, but then we watched the movie they have in the movie dome. It was pretty awesome, but way too long for the kids...and it kind of put us to sleep. But we bought some toys from there little store and the kids loved them! The planetarium is on the college campus, and it beautiful!! All in all, it was a nice visit, I wouldn’t go back to the planetarium, but id definitely have a nice picnic on the college grounds.

“Interesting”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 October 2013

A few meteors on display, not too much else, however, the star of the display was the most accurate in the world - 3D six foot replica of earth and all it's contours. And another one of the moon. So interesting. Small fee. Free parking and convenient location.

“Interesting, but small”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 October 2013

I walked, so it was difficult to find; it would have been a lot easier had I been driving. The planetarium itself consists of a small "gift shop" at the entrance, an exhibit room, and a huge sun where they do the shows.

I attended two shows (3 actually as two are shown back to back as one). The first was educational, and quite interesting, while the 2nd was a dizzying, motion sickness inducing piece for Pink Floyd's album "Darkside of the Moon." I would highly recommend seeing this if you are into Pink Floyd and aren't prone to seizures.
